to be annoyed by being paid for work via a pocketmoney card?

Just want to see if I am being unreasonable here.

I've picked up a job as a Christmas Temp at Tesco this Winter, gave in my bank details as requested for being paid as per the letter contract.

However, in the post today, I've received a Tuxedo prepay card. Yes kids, the same thing you'd give your teenager. I will be paid through this pre-loaded card to save Tesco on their administrative fees.

Infantilising at best I know, however I could suck it up were it not for the fact that it will cost me money to use for bills, direct debits etc. etc. I know I can use it in the shops, but I feel like it's an extra burden on those of us who are picking up extra hours working in a shop. You know, just to pay bills.

What do you think? Has anyone else had this experience?

And for the record, no, the pocketmoney card was not mentioned at all in any of the recruitment gumpf, contract or anywhere outside a Google search which has yielded that Tesco are using it for their temp staff.

You should have a 14 day cooling off period - I assume tuxedo are Regulated as it is a financial services product.

I’m interested in where you gave permission for Tesco to pass your data to a third party. Also do Tuxedo access your credit file even to check ID?

I suggest making a complaint to Tuxedo and when you are not satisfied writing to the FOS. You need to claim you have been affected financially - phone calls, fees incurred etc.

If Tesco are giving Tuxedo numerous customers how much do Tuxedo pay? Would this data be accessible via a FOI request?

bunbunny · 16/11/2017 15:45

Do you get charged if you use a tuxedo card in Tescos itself, to buy shopping?

bunbunny · 16/11/2017 15:46

Oh and still reckon you should report them to the Data Protection people for passing on information that they shouldn't.

hamptonhangingpork · 16/11/2017 15:54

The card can be used in shops and on online sites that take Mastercard.

Tuxedo levies no transaction fee if the card is used in these ways, which isn't to say a website and shop wouldn't. I'm not in a massive hurry to research which shops / sites charges (I've seen places charge for using a Mastercard in the past). I'd rather job hunt and share information I presently have available to me.

But considering I took a job to pay bills (which incurs charges), not buy shopping, still inappropriate, no?

I wonder whether this card, issued by Mastercard, can be used to pay a Mastercard credit card bill?

HelenaDove · 16/11/2017 16:06

OP have you had a reaction from them yet about handing in your notice.

hamptonhangingpork · 16/11/2017 16:11

No reaction. No shirty calls etc. My next shift is supposed to be tomorrow.

I don't think I will be able make it in because I feel like I'm coming down with something. All this stress, doesn't help, I imagine.

OP posts:
HelenaDove · 16/11/2017 17:18

stress can cause quite a few illnesses.

Roomster101 · 16/11/2017 17:18

Considering that payroll should only have given you a Tuxedo prepay card if you didn't provide bank details this seems like an employee mistake rather than a problem with Tesco policy.

HelenaDove · 16/11/2017 17:23

the OP has tried to sort it with the call centre She has also printed a screenshot of a letter on this thread.

If its all down to one employee he/she doesnt half get around.

Roomster101 · 16/11/2017 17:33

the OP has tried to sort it with the call centre She has also printed a screenshot of a letter on this thread.

The screenshot of the letter doesn't suggest that the card was requested regardless of whether OP has a bank account though. The policy is apparently that they will only do this for employees that don't have bank accounts.

If its all down to one employee he/she doesnt half get around.

I haven't found much on the internet to suggest that many other people have received a card despite having a bank account which would suggest that a mistake rather than anything else.

hamptonhangingpork · 16/11/2017 17:41

Roomster - if you set aside the fact you put up with a lot when you're a seasonal worker and it goes with the territory, to be fair, speaking out is actually quite hard to do I imagine. I'm not reliant on this job to feed myself and my son nor am I in submission to the local dwp.

However, I am having to absorb the inconvenience of what according to you may be a mistake. Both in terms of money and time.

Rather than dealing with my issue, the local store's payroll was "so, what?".

Perhaps I have the misfortune of working at a store with a particularly...strident...function and that my case is the exception rather than a rule.

But I respect your opinion nonetheless, and I do not mean that sarcastically.

Roomster, I've missed this bit. Could you explain where you got this, please?

PerkingFaintly · 16/11/2017 17:54

Because that's in direct conflict with Tuxedo's website, which states "Retail giant Tesco required a cost-effective payroll solution for staff without bank accounts or employed on short-term temporary contracts. "

DeleteOrDecay · 16/11/2017 17:55

I think it’s quite bad that they didn’t actually inform you that this was how you were going to be paid before sending a card out to you. It would have given you a chance to speak up and say hang on I gave you my bank details and clear up any mistakes. Not to mention them passing your details onto another company without your permission.

Mistake or not it’s a shitty way to treat an employee.

Iwantacampervan · 16/11/2017 18:22

I'm so pleased that this thread was started on Tuesday as I wasn't aware of the situation - my 18 year old daughter has just started a temporary job at Tesco and received one of these cards today. She worked for them last year and was paid through her bank account and she also had to give them her acount details before her induction days. She was not told about the card as she wants to be paid into the bank.
I'm about to e mail Paul Lewis!

HelenaDove · 16/11/2017 18:25

So she worked for them previously and was paid via her bank account yet still got one of these cards.

hamptonhangingpork · 16/11/2017 18:36

Iwant - you might want to contact Nat from Organise as well. They are looking into this situation. Her details are earlier in the thread x

So she worked for them previously and was paid via her bank account yet still got one of these cards. Yes! She only got the card today and hasn't had a chance to query anything with her HR team.

I've sent a message to Paul Lewis and also one to Tuxedo Customer Care asking who is due to pay the £4.99 a month fee and also the cost of the two activation phone calls she'll have to make (one for the card and the other for the PIN) as they don't look like Freephone numbers.
If she was still under 18 I think they would have paid her through her bank.
I'll get in touch with Nat from Organise too.

PerkingFaintly · 16/11/2017 18:55

Iwantacampervan, Tesco changing how they pay your DD fits well with the wording on the letter Tesco sent hampton:

"Welcome to the new way of receiving your wages, salary or pension from Tesco. This card has been requested by your employer and your wages, salary or pension will be paid onto this card from now on. "

[bolding mine]

nannynick · 16/11/2017 19:23

Newcastle Building Society day they sold the pre-paid card business in 2011 to Wirecard. So document I found must be old but oddly is still on the website.

Has anyone been able to get any official comment from Tesco. Surprised their social media team have not asked Mumsnet if they can post a response. It may have been a simple payroll mistake that the store or HQ team could have resolved very quickly. There may be a policy of issuing cards when someone does not have a bank account but there may be a policy to quickly revert that once bank details are known, without the employee incurring any fees.

When you got given the card we’re you given terms & conditions of use?

HelenaDove · 16/11/2017 19:29

Perking looks like the bolding didnt work!!

hamptonhangingpork · 16/11/2017 19:33

The only thing I received in the post was the letter and the card.

No terms and conditions.

Just read this to the Husband who works for tesco. He is appalled and will be asking around at work to see if anyone in his store is having the issue x he said wages departments are shit (he works nights and they are the forgotten shift) and it might be worth contacting the union x

YouLookRadiantCousin · 16/11/2017 20:20

I know a few people who work in the Tesco call centre/office in Cardiff. They're all getting made redundant over the next couple of months. All 1,100 people who work there. They all got told out of the blue a few months ago. It's basically because the lease on the building is up and Tesco have decided to move everything to Dundee because it's cheaper.

They are a truly shit company who do not give a monkeys about their staff. I thought that before I read this thread! But fucking hell, they just get better and better.

I know it must be beyond frustrating when you're trying to get through on the phone - but it could well be because your call's been routed to Cardiff, and a lot of them don't give a shit any more!
