Just thinking back on a weird experience from several years ago.

I was walking along a narrow country road by myself, on an overcast, rather oppressively humid summer's day. It was a couple of miles from my home and I had travelled the road quite often by car, but never on foot.

All of a sudden I began to have the strangest feeling that something terrible was going to happen if I stayed on the road any longer. I shook it off and kept walking. The atmosphere changed. The birds were still singing, there wasn't anyone in sight... I can't explain but it felt like the hedges were almost coming closer together around me. Like a really oppressive feeling on this beautiful, deserted road.

Eventually I rang home to get someone to come and lift me, claiming to have felt a few drops of rain starting to fall. I was too embarrassed to give 'intuition' as my reason.

It was such a strange feeling, not one I've ever had before or since, there or anywhere else. I am totally non-woo but think maybe there was some reason I wasn't meant to stay there that day- it was very narrow and winding and I could have been hit by a car easily, I suppose.

Anyone else ever had gut feelings about things, either rightly or wrongly?

My mum never got on well with her mum and before she passed away, they had only spoken monthly for the preceding few years. One night, I had a vivid dream that my grandma had died and that we couldn't find out any information from anyone about her whereabouts etc. In my dream, 10 days later, It was confirmed that she had passed away. Based on my dream, my mum started contacting people and couldn't get hold of her mum/her sisters/friends. Exactly 10 days later we found out she had died.

SWtobe · 13/11/2017 22:14

First one is I was going to University in a different city and was seeing my mum for the last time so we hugged and said goodbye etc and I cried for about an hour after to my dp saying I feel like this is the last time I’m going to see her alive. 1 month and a bit later she died suddenly and I hadn’t been home yet so never seen her face to face again.

Secondly I got up one day and said I am going to visit my grandad. I normally visited every 2 weeks or so with my child. So I called down and my uncle said he’s not well he’s in bed so we went up and had a chat and I held his hand, told him I loved him ( I didn’t often say this as he was old fashioned and didn’t like things like that) and off we went. I text my dad and said ‘Grandad didn’t look too well you should call see him).

He died an hour later. This will never leave me but I’m glad I got those last moment with him.

No such thing as premonition, only coincidence

ohmadays · 13/11/2017 22:36

Wow, didn't expect so many replies!!

A similar thing happened to me once pigeon. I went to a (smallish) poetry reading aged 10 or so. There was a raffle ticket on each seat, and the audience all had a chance to win a signed copy. I just calmly knew as soon as I sat down that I was going to win a book. Lo and behold I did. Weird.

When I was pregnant with twins, they were the type that can be either identical or non identical, and could be either sex or one of each. I could only picture identical boys for some reason - found out they were boys but they can't tell at that stage if they're identical or not - you need a DNA test.

When they were born, one had growth restriction so he was much smaller. As he started to gain weight they looked increasingly alike but then he was put on a drug that causes a lot of appearance changes. He's being gradually weaned off it and I thought they couldn't be identical because they have different colour eyes but apparently that's not the case. They're almost 14 months old now and my husband thinks I'm crazy but I'm still sure they're identical. Going to wait until he's off the meds and see how similar they are, then maybe I'll get the DNA test :)

Beamur · 13/11/2017 22:46

While pregnant I was convinced I was carrying a boy.
Just before DD was born, I dreamt of a baby girl with quite unusual hair and eye colouring. Just like she has.

CaoNiMa · 13/11/2017 22:49

I've never actually written this down or said it out loud before, because it's kind of awful.

The last time I saw my Nanna, when I was 16, I thought to myself "The next time I see her she'll be in a coffin."

It was true. She wasn't sick, though. There was nothing to suggest that she would die of old age the following day, but she did.

TheCatsMother99 · 13/11/2017 22:49

I'd been visiting my parents when I was about to set off home but I had the strongest feeling I shouldn't leave just yet, I've honestly never felt anything like it before or after.

When I did set off I found there had been a terrible accident one of the roads I had to take that must have occured at the time I would have been there if I had left my parents as originally planned.

Now I always go with my gut feeling even though I've never had a gut feeling so strong before.

I dreamt I was watching a horse race on tv one night. This horse was positively pulling away from the other horses. The name of the winning horse was in white letters at the bottom of the screen and a voice was telling me to say the name.

In the morning I told dp about it and he looked up the name. It was a 40/1 shot that was running that day and he went down to the bookies and put £10 to win on it.

We ended up watching the race on tv and the horse won by a huge margin

Flowerbot · 13/11/2017 22:53

be aware possibly triggering When I was 21 I went abroad and was held prisoner for a week and raped. The night before I travelled to the place where it happened, I clearly saw my attacker’s face when I closed my eyes to go to sleep. I wish it had stopped me travelling there but i didn’t make the connection until it was too late. I wish that I had understood that it was a warning and stayed where I was.

allthegoodusernameshavegone · 13/11/2017 22:59

I was in a pub when this man came in smiled at me and I thought, that’s the man I’m going to marry, we’ve now been together 14 years! But at the time I thought I was in love with my then bf.

ohmadays · 13/11/2017 23:04

That gave me the shivers, Winter. Very similar to my experience.

I'm so sorry that happened to you, flowerbot, please don't blame yourself Flowers

I dreamt my grandfather had died, the next day my mum got a telegram telling her to come quick, he was on his deathbed. He died just before she arrived.

ToadTheVampireThreadKiller · 13/11/2017 23:09

On holiday with a friend, she was driving when the words 'Dead dog in the middle of the road' came into my head.

About 20 minutes later we reached an island in the road and beside it was a sandy coloured dog, just lying there with the traffic passing.

BertrandRussell · 13/11/2017 23:11

"No such thing as premonition, only coincidence"
And post hoc rationalisation.

dropthemic · 13/11/2017 23:15

There was a time I was convinced I was having premonitions. People in work would be discussing something on the news that I hadn't seen or heard that morning and I would seem to know all the details. Id be listening to the news and I just knew details before they said them e.g earthquake somewhere and I could tell how many were injured before it was said. I was freaking myself out, until I realised where my premonitions were coming from.. my radio alarm clock. It was set to come on very low and gradually get louder. Turns out I was still asleep when it came on during the news bulletin. I was absorbing it all unconsciously. I felt like a right numpty.
Though I have had moments I can't explain like rooting my phone out of the bottom of my bag because I had a strong feeling my friend was going to call and would be upset. Sure enough moments later she called to tell me someone close to her suddenly died.

ohmadays · 13/11/2017 23:16

This isn't a premonition type dream exactly but I wanted to share it.

(slighty disturbing)

My relative, a particularly devout Catholic nun, passed on a few months ago. After she died I dreamt of her twice. The first dream IIRC was her laid out on a bed in a shroud, at the wake. Her dead body sort of bent at the waist and sat up, looking accusingly at me beside my sister.

In the second dream she was unhappy, again. A few days later, it struck me that she clearly would have wanted me to pray for the happy repose of her soul (a big part of our faith).

Accordingly I went to the chapel where I used to go as a child and wrote her name in the prayer request book, as per my duty.

No more dreams til a few weeks later, when I dreamt she was happy and free, with lots of other nuns in the convent where she used to live.

I know this is all totally subjective but it did put me at ease and strengthen my belief in an afterlife, etc.

Not really a premonition- I had a weird nightmare about being pregnant (we weren’t TTC). Bit horrible but in the dream I was watching my own post mortum and they said “oh she was pregnant”. Woke up as it was really horrible and then a week later my period didn’t happen. My body obviously knew before my brain found out.

PurpleMinionMummy · 13/11/2017 23:25

I've had a few woo things but it happened more when I was a child/teen. Sometimes something would happen that would trigger a memory and I knew what would happen next. I once dreamt I got followed home. It happened some months later, a young lad making inappropriate suggestions. I'm sure the reason he gave up and left me alone was because I was so calm, the only reason I was so calm was because in my dream I'd not been harmed so I knew I'd be ok. I often know who's calling or that x will call me later on that day. I also knew the last time I saw my fil it would be the last time. I sent my husband back to say goodbye a second time

whyioughtta · 13/11/2017 23:25

Happened to me loads over the years to the extent that I won't say things out loud now in case I tempt fate. Sometimes I have to banish awful thoughts from my head too & touch wood to stop them from happening

Just after the bells rang, to bring in the year 2000, I suddenly thought ‘dad will not see this year out’. He died, very suddenly, in November that year. He wasn’t particularly old, nor in especially bad health, so I had no rational reason to expect the worst.

HeebieJeebies456 · 14/11/2017 00:37

I started having premonitions or just 'knowing' certain things since i was about 7 years old.
I used to think it was a superpower that only i had Grin

In my teens, i had a dream about a teacher i fancied the pants off.
I clearly remember it was a weekend as obviously i couldn't wait for Monday so i could see his gorgeous face again Grin
What i did not expect was for my dream to play out......i was walking down the science corridor stairs, he was ahead of me walking past the music room with his back towards me, wearing a blue shirt - with a new short-back-n-sides haircut.
When i complimented him on his hair he told me he'd had it cut the day before (Sunday).
Until the day he left school i held out hope my other saucy dreams about him would come true, alas they never did.

In my family, i'm always the last to be told about family news.
The universe sympathises with me though because i always know what they're up to re certain stuff Grin
My younger sis has two girls and was a single parent almost 2 years ago.....in my dream i saw her bedroom with a baby cot and all the decor was pink, my neices were sat on the bed giggling.
I rang her the next day and told her and she got all flustered and cagey....2 weeks later we find out she'd secretly married her bf (which only my neices knew about) and she was pregnant.
She gave birth to a gorgeous baby girl! Grin

Same with my brother, only i dreamt about wedding preparations.
Told my mum - who then duly informed me that they were arranging to meet the parents of the girl he wanted to marry Grin

The weirdest and most WTF one - i dreamt i was looking through the eyes of an ex-bf from 18 years ago - he was the One That Got Away and the biggest love of my life.
I could hear the cheesy 80's romantic music in the background, saw the wooden table and decor of the restaurant, and i just knew he was about to propose to his gf.
I couldn't exactly contact him and ask, so i kept snooping on his facebook....one week later he announced his engagement Hmm
I also dreamt he'd had a baby girl, her features were very clear but she was in an extremely distressed state......2 years after he announced the engagement he indeed had a baby girl - with those exact features.
Unfortunately, she also had a blood cancer.

I don't know why the universe likes to tell me stuff like this instead of lottery numbers - now those would be really useful! Grin Grin

ToadTheVampireThreadKiller · 14/11/2017 00:40

I was away for a weekend and while in a queue we got talking to the couple in front, spent the evening with them. I stayed in touch with the lady who lived in another country, quite distant and we became friends although we didn't communicate a lot but did meet up when she was in England.

One day I found I kept thinking of her, inexplicably, no reason as we weren't due to meet, but something was wrong.

The next day she phoned to tell me that the man she was with when we met had been killed in an accident. He had just asked her to marry him.
