To feel really frustrated that so many drivers don't know this?

I am a biker (as in motorcycle).

I'm a member of a few biking related pages on fb and recently my feed is inundated with videos and articles about bikers being assaulted by car drivers or run over/knocked off their bikes due to car drivers not looking or seeing them or even intentionally. Some of them have been really shocking!

One thing that seems to be coming up time and time again is drivers bemoaning bikers 'illegally overtaking' or 'pushing in' or 'riding between the lanes'. All of these things are perfectly legal for bikers and it is called filtering - it is used to make progress through traffic and some believe it is actually safer for bikers, being vulnerable road users. And yet 90% of the drivers comments on these videos are basically saying it is the bikers fault they got run over/maimed/attacked because they 'shouldn't have been between the lanes'. We are allowed to be!

Aibu to find it very frustrating that SO many drivers don't seem to know that this is legal?

Obviously there are always idiots that ride unsafely and I'm not referring to these people, rather those who follow the rules and filter legally and safely and still get abuse for it.

StrictlyPannnn What policing is DressedCrab's husband doing? You and Piffle keep talking about policing and laws, I've asked Piffle which law and got response, perhaps you could answer?

What policing is he doing? Which law?

AnnabellaH · 16/11/2017 08:34

My father and friends were all bikers. The professional kind (police, instructors, racing) not the sunday brigade.

Half of them got so fed up of twatty car drivers they took to taking small bottles of grease and squirting it on the windscreens of arseholes at traffic lights. And possibly a few wing mirrors were lost in the past.

There are dickhead car drivers. There are dickhead bikers.

I've actually had an altercation with another car driver on the road before because I watched him go to open his door on an upcoming biker (I closed the gap so the biker knew to stop).

The highway code needs to be a much bigger focus of the driving test and the passmarks should be 99% as far as I'm concerned.

PiffleandWiffle · 16/11/2017 08:42

Yet again your prove how deeply dim some cyclists are.

You don't even know who you're talking to do you? Grin

I'm a motorcyclist & the further left he is, the better for me!! It's the cyclists trying to go round him I'll have to look out for now though.

Tell him to stop worrying about others and his suit & just drive responsibly please - and not to wobble his head as he might miss something important in his mirrors.....

AnnabellaH · 16/11/2017 08:46

Oh and @dressedcrab your husband is going to cause more damage than good one day. Especially if he forces someone to overtake on the right.

I'd go so far as saying he was a muppet to be fair and more of a liability than a pratt on a cycle.

PiffleandWiffle · 16/11/2017 08:46

What policing is he doing? Which law?

Doesn't have to involve laws.....

Here You Go.

Policing

Noun

  1. people who seek to regulate a specified activity, practice, etc.:

Verb

  1. to regulate, control, or keep in order by or as if by means of police.

Hope that helps....... Wink

AnnabellaH · 16/11/2017 08:47

And if you can't see that then it's more worrying and I wonder how bad your driving is too?

But Piffle, it is you who said DressedCrab's husband was somehow policing laws:

PiffleandWiffle Wed 15-Nov-17 16:59:05
Because it's not his place to apply what he thinks is the law.

I ask again, which law precisely is it not DressedCrab's husband's place to apply?

StrictlyPannnn · 16/11/2017 10:31

Ultimately it will e the Don't Be A Knob law.

Specifically it will be something in the highway code which may be legally enforceable and certainly not allowing room for more vulnerable road users. That sort of thing.

But not being a knob supersedes all other legislation.

PiffleandWiffle · 16/11/2017 11:16

If you read caaaarefully you'll see that I say "what he thinks is the law" - that there is your clue, he thinks its a law but it's not!! He thinks he's applying the law of "I know better than you".....

But as a general catch all, in case that's too subtle for you, unless her husband is a Police Officer it's not his place to apply any laws or to enforce any highway regulations - real or perceived.....

Cheers! Wine

Which part of the Highway Code? You seem to know so much about what DressedCrab's husband is thinking, so which law or which part of the Highway Code do you think?

Right, so now you're saying he's not applying a law that he thinks is the law, even though you said he was before. Confused I'm sure DressedCrab's husband is aware there is not legal basis of "I know better than you".

So which law or piece of knowledge do you think DressedCrab's husband is thinking "he knows better than you"?

As above. Which law or highway regulation - real or perceived - do you believe DressedCrab's husband thinks he is enforcing?

FFS how dim can you be? I've said several times he doesn't think it is a law. You seem unable to read basic English. Before attempting to patronise someone else maybe be sure you have read the posts properly, or you will look like an idiot. Which you do.

I’m sorry but if a policeman is going around deliberately knocking off wing mirrors and squirting grease over windscreens of cars (which is very dangerous FYI) I hope they were reported and sacked.

RagingFemininist · 16/11/2017 15:46

I had the same reaction sticky

It seems that some people see themselves as above the law. A shame theyare also supposed to be representing it.

StickThatInYourPipe · 16/11/2017 15:50

RagingFemininist

It’s quite scary really eh? Policemen driving about in bikes, kicking off wingmirrors and squirting grease over the windscreens of cars. Probably with a smile and stuck up middle finger at the same time.

Unihorn · 16/11/2017 15:53

My husband has a motorbike. If I'm in traffic I move as far over as I can to leave room for filtering. If drivers had good lane discipline it really wouldn't be dangerous.

StrictlyPannnn · 16/11/2017 18:55

Yes gud lane discipline is pretty important. I ride my push bike into and out of a busy city centre return journey is 25 miles per day. I see a lot of traffic.
I don't condone bad behaviour but I do understand it. It's a difficult commute and most drivers are reasonable.
I've also been driving since 1984 so I am not without a perspective.

StrictlyPannnn · 16/11/2017 18:56

I also used ride a motorbike but not recently. It's just too dangerous for me.

FlowerPot1234 · 16/11/2017 19:02

StrictlyPannnn Are you able to answer the question I asked you this afternoon?

StrictlyPannnn · 16/11/2017 19:40

Not really now. Too busy. Later?

ForalltheSaints · 16/11/2017 19:46

Sadly what the OP describes does not surprise me.

Unfortunately because too many people see driving a car as a right not a privilege and the Clarkson lovers are paid too much attention, it may not change soon.

Even the laws motorists are aware of are frequently broken.

TheOriginalMagratGarlik · 18/11/2017 17:12

I am an experienced biker with advanced motorbike qualifications and a also a blood bike rider. I do love it when car drivers (who have never been trained to ride a motorbike) think they know how to ride a bike better than trained, experienced riders. Filtering btw is an expectation on the advanced motorbike test if circumstances allow for it.

Those saying that bikers filter at 40-70mph are talking bullshit. If the bike is doing 70mph between two lanes of cars, that's not filtering, that's being a dick. However, the recommended speed differential between a filtering motorbike and the traffic is not more than 15-20 mph. The reason that it is safer than staying in the queue of traffic is that one of the most common injuries for bikers who stay in the queue is being rear-ended, which at best can result in a broken pelvis.

Drivers who pull out to block bikes from filtering are putting the riders lives deliberately at risk and should be prosecuted for dangerous driving and those who fail to use their mirrors before changing lanes should also be prosecuted for driving without due care and attention. If drivers would pay more attention to driving their own vehicles safely, rather than trying to direct other road-users in how they should be driving/riding theirs I'm fairly sure there would be an awful lot less collisions on the road in the first place.
