I'm 17 stone a bit overweight. I have lots of excuses reasons. If I do ten minutes exercise twice a day then how long will it take me to see a difference?

OP posts:
Battleax · 12/11/2017 23:06

About a bit^

Ohyesiam · 12/11/2017 23:08

Just saw all the beef.
Op I don't know why people are being arsey, just carry on empowering yourself, it's the best way to make the smirkers who know fucking everything back off.

ferriswheel · 12/11/2017 23:11

Thank you ohyesiam

Its extra annoying because I used to be extremely fit. More fit I bet than the rude pp.

I'm actually quite shocked because at the moment I am strong enough to see past it but six months ago I would have struggled.

If you manage ten minutes twice a day I think that's more than many others do (myself included). I lost 1.5 st with Slimming World. Then I started Zumba and other gym based classes, then the C25K running which I've just finished. I think you'll find it hard to exercise more until you've lost more weight first as you'll just feel tired and out of breath. So I'd focus on the weight loss first. Good luck.

IllBeAtTheBarIfYouNeedMe · 12/11/2017 23:12

Well done for starting. That’s the hardest part. I went from starting 2016 at nearly 20st. Last month I was 7st lighter and ran my first marathon. I would definitely second the responses that say diet was the major factor for my weight loss. I do a lot more then 10mins daily but my dc are older, old enough to leave at home alone whilst I go to the gym/run/classes/pool. I did download an app which was based on the idea of 7 minutes of hiit daily but I’ve not used it (my dog doesn’t allow me to get on with it lol) but that may be an idea for you to look at.

Best of luck Flowers

ShirleyPhallus · 12/11/2017 23:13

I'd also add, treat this like a really long term lifestyle choice rather than a short term diet. Don't set yourself like 3 months for the weight to come off, see it as a year long challenge

The PP who said she eats only 1000 calories a day, I hope that's only sometimes because you'll screw your metabolism if you eat that little long term

Sandsunsea · 12/11/2017 23:13

Ferris I recommend investing in a Fitbit and using the app to track what you eat and to reach daily activity targets. It's very motivating and will work though it won't work overnight.

ShirleyPhallus · 12/11/2017 23:13

Come on now OP, you've had loads of helpful responses, focus on those and not on the very minor negative comments on here

Liiinoo · 12/11/2017 23:13

I got a Fitbit last Christmas. I have gone from averaging 4000 steps a day to over 12000. I get the bus and walk so much now that I am thinking of selling the car. I also use a habit app and do planks every day and also 15-30 minutes of yoga or stretching 4/5 times a week. I agree that little and often is the answer. Then you can increase intensity or duration gradually.

I don't know if I've lost any weight (DD used to to have anorexia and since then we don't have scales in the house) but I know I look and feel much better and my self esteem is much higher than it was this time last year. I have had a bad week this week as I have a cold and have been very tired so haven't done as much as normal but as soon as I am well I will be back on track.

Well done OP. Don't let some people's snarkiness put you off.

SabineUndine · 12/11/2017 23:17

OP I weigh more than you and I’ve spent the weekend preparing for big lifestyle changes to lose weight and get fitter. That’s going to include walking 10K steps a day and some exercises. I don’t think the exercise alone will make me lose weight but it will tone me up.

SabineUndine · 12/11/2017 23:20

Sorry posted too soon. Anything you do is better than nothing and everybody has to start somewhere. Go for it!

MrsOverTheRoad · 12/11/2017 23:21

OP it's a combination of what you eat and how much you move.

You have to seriously drop your cals and up your excersise to see a difference.

TonicandLime · 12/11/2017 23:23

Exercise will do nothing you need to address your food intake.

WorraLiberty · 12/11/2017 23:30

To be fair to the first poster, saying "I'll bite", it did sound as though you were being a little bit light hearted/flippant with the whole '10 minutes exercise' OP.

Or at least it did to me anyway, because what with that and the crossed out words in your opening post, it just kind of came across that way.

I would imagine if you don't have more time than 20 minutes in two 10 minute bursts (which is a good start), a complete overhaul of portion size/cutting down on snacks etc, would lose you more wait rather than just a small bit of exercise alone.

Good luck Thanks

ferriswheel · 12/11/2017 23:33

I don't do portion size. I eat toast. --I'm too fkn tired to organise more.

Pp who said I was getting positive feedback, yes I agree. But I for someone who has been 'fed' such negativity by my abusive stbxh, I just didn't need it here.

OP posts:
WorraLiberty · 12/11/2017 23:34

You only eat toast and nothing else?

Battleax · 12/11/2017 23:35

Also think about probiotic supplements and foods to encourage good gut flora. There's growing evidence it's important;

chockaholic72 · 12/11/2017 23:38

If you can manage to find an hour a day - walk. iPod, a pair of trackie bottoms and trainers, every single day. Find a safe, busy route with lots of people around. I found this out by accident when I lived in London and the tube was a nightmare every day for a week. I walked home from Aldwych to Holloway Road, four miles, and at the end of the week was v surprised to see I'd lost 2lbs. So I carried on. In the dark, rain, summer, etc. I ended up losing 4.5 stone in a year.

SilverdaleGlen · 12/11/2017 23:38

Don't bite at her and OP good for you. I was 16.9 a while ago and started with cutting crap from my diet, then went to the gym twice a week and do about 20- 30m one a week, not a lot!

Yet I'm now 12 stone 11 from just those small changes so it CAN make a difference when you have a lot to lose.

I now have to step up the exercise to shift the rest.

Oh and I'm not living on salad, it's mainly toast, yoghurt and beans! I found a big glass of whole milk in the morning really helped as it fills you up and contrary to popular belief is only 3% fat.

LipstickHandbagCoffee · 12/11/2017 23:55

Ferris wheel it took courage to post seeking advice, hope you get to where you want
I think start with 10min a day and progress as confidence and stamina increase

ScrambledSmegs · 12/11/2017 23:57

Well my journey was complicated by an underactive thyroid diagnosis, I'm now finding it much easier to be fit and healthy than I did before. I assumed that my tiredness was down to my non-sleeping children but that was only part of it. I'm a lot more motivated now - have lost some weight but still have about a stone to go. It feels more than it sounds, that last one is stubborn!

I agree that diet is key here - I've been doing quite a lot of exercise pre and post diagnosis, more than it sounds like you can reasonably fit into your day, but I wasn't really losing weight just getting fitter. Now that I don't really have sugar and simple carb cravings I've managed to shift some of the weight that just wasn't budging before.

Oh, and I took a quick look online, there are loads of 7 minute HIIT workouts on Youtube. There are also online at home workout plans available - one of my friends has just started this thing called Beach Body (awful name I know) which apparently lets you tailor your workouts to your level of fitness and goals, and I think there's some sort of meal plan involved too.

You've already started which is amazing, so just keep that motivation going.

StaplesCorner · 13/11/2017 00:01

OP you had a couple of offhand responses and everyone else was trying to offer advice. So no, you weren't BU thinking 10 minutes a day would help but you are BU thinking you could come on AIBU and not get arsey remarks Wink

OliviaBonas · 13/11/2017 00:03

Definitely get a fit bit - walk everywhere you can!

There's an active 10 app for you to do 1-3 brisk 10 mins walks a day but it's not as motivating as a fit bit.

I have started couch to 5k which is fab. Lifting weights has made the biggest difference to me though.

Alice Living and Joe Wicks do fab free workouts online.

The Joe Wicks cook books are fab too. Up your protein and reduce your carbs.

Tatiannatomasina · 13/11/2017 00:03

I have found its all about the food you eat. Yes you look better and tone up with exercise but cutting calories and carbs is my go to. I would stop the toast and try eggs for breakfast instead. Make little changes, try my fitness pal. 10 minutes is a start but it wont change a thing without a change of diet. Its shit and hard but you can do it x

OliviaBonas · 13/11/2017 00:37

I have porridge most days. I don't eat bread. Eat chicken or salmon. Drink loads of water.
