Mary Poppins

Am I alone in finding it unnecessarily cringey and overly sentimental? Blush or does anyone else think the same? (Feel a bit guilty posting this, as it's loved by so many people - expecting a few biscuits to come my way Wink).

It's the best. And it's got penguins 🐧.

Becles · 12/11/2017 01:39

The film has its shortcomings, but the books are amazing

Bloodybridget · 12/11/2017 02:36

The books aren't "dark"! They all include magical/fantasy episodes which I don't enjoy as much as the everyday stuff and Mary Poppins' wonderful acerbity. I liked the film when I was 10, but it's too Disney for me now. Did you know there's a remake in production?

YANBU I can't stand her and don't get me started on Snow White.

ComingUpTrumps · 12/11/2017 07:14

Wow, I didn't actually realise it was made so long ago Blush

Really don't like Dick Van Dyke in it either - his accent and whole happy-go-lucky character on me a bit Blush

ComingUpTrumps · 12/11/2017 07:15

*grates on me a bit

Heatherjayne1972 · 12/11/2017 07:27

Although dick van dyke has apologised for his terrible 'cockney' accent

Hassled · 12/11/2017 07:34

Dick Van Dyke was taught how to speak Cockney by an Australian, I think. Or was it someone Irish? Either way, it was someone who had never spoken Cockney and I always feel sorry for DVD over that - he's taken so much shit for something that wasn't his fault.

And I love the film. Even though Mary is too smug by half. Saving Mr Banks is great too - about the making of the film, with Tom Hanks.

rizlett · 12/11/2017 07:34

I can't wait for the sequel autumn 2018.

I love the emancipated Mrs Banks forever saying 'Yes dear' to her dh.

strawberrisc · 12/11/2017 07:37

Can’t STAND it! The only Disney film I can stomach is Dumbo.

hippyhippyshake · 12/11/2017 07:50

I was just coming on to say that if ever there was a film ripe for a remake then this was it. I didn't know there was one in the pipeline. One true to the books would be amazing, there were some great magical adventures for all four children in them.

I never fell in love with the film when it came out but my dad bought an LP of the songs and we sang them all time. Happy days!

ISaySteadyOn · 12/11/2017 07:54

Seriously, OP, read the books. They are wonderful. But Disney clearly couldn't handle them as they were.

makeourfuture · 12/11/2017 07:54

I love Dick Van Dyke

My goodness he can dance though.

Copperspot · 12/11/2017 09:13

Oh this was my absolute favourite as a child! I used to watch it at least 3 times a week, drove my mum mad Grin

If it’s ever on tv now my mum texts me ‘it’s on’.

I love the songs (feed the birds is one of the most beautiful instrumentals...), the magic of it amazed me as a child, and as an adult i watch it more from the parents perspective. Mr Banks realising his family is more inportant, etc.

Saving Mr Banks makes me wail like a baby Blush in fact this thread has inspired me to watch it again tonight

wobblywonderwoman · 12/11/2017 09:16

I bought thus last week and my 2 & 4 year old loved it so much

FindoGask · 12/11/2017 09:16

Mary Poppins was one of maybe three films we had on VHS when I was a kid, so I watched it a lot and loved it. But I know the author herself didn't like the Disney version (in fact there's a film about that isn't there? Saving Mr Banks?). I've never read the books though.

EmilyChambers79 · 12/11/2017 09:27

Did you know there's a remake in production

It's not a remake as such, it's the second book being turned into a film.

I love Mary Poppins! My employers refer to me as Mary as a joke sometimes.

And I love my Mary Poppins Christmas decoration!

RedBullBlood · 12/11/2017 09:41

Isn't Mary Poppins a lot more chippy in the books? I thought I remembered a section where the children rush to tell their parents about one of their adventures with her, and Mary tells the parents it never happened. A bit rude...

LinoleumBlownapart · 12/11/2017 09:48

Mary Poppins is more like a witch in the books with a wicked streak. P. L. Travers did not like the film at all. The real Mary Poppins was more like Nanny McFee but not as nice. I recommend the books, they are brilliant.

HumphreyCobblers · 12/11/2017 09:50

I agree the books are amazing. Really quite dark and edgy. Fabulous adventures with living constellations and all sorts of mythical characters.

I don't mind the film though it is very very long. Feed the Birds is an amazing song.

peachgreen · 12/11/2017 10:01

@EmilyChambers79 I need to see this Christmas decoration!

TossDaily · 12/11/2017 10:56

I love it - mainly because DS1 was sweetly obsessed with it when he was tiny.

I once caught him dancing like a chimney sweep and nearly breaking his neck trying to lick his elbows - he thought the sweeps sang 'Lick your elbows - step in time!' instead of 'link your elbows' Smile

And 'Feed the Birds' gives me a lump in the throat, without fail.

RinonaWyder · 12/11/2017 10:59

I adore Mary Poppins. Anything that has songs by the Sherman brothers gets a big thumbs up from me.
