I need to vent. I am so pissed off. He’s sitting next to me snoring his arse off. I feel like ripping his head off 😑

OP posts:
JonSnowsWife · 11/11/2017 10:42

But yes OP simply just report him. Let them deal with it.

DiegoMadonna · 11/11/2017 10:44

If there's enough work for both of you then how are you doing it all while he sleeps?

Leave some in the "box" so that next time he checks, there'll be something for him to do.

NamasteNiki · 11/11/2017 10:45

Some members of my family fall asleep in the chair by 9pm and the chorus of snoring drives me crackers.

Clapping works. Really really loudly. Clap as though you are in the theatre applauding a great performance. It never fails to wake up my family. Every time he drops off clap.

Or failing that is there any way you can arrange someone to come to the lab. Just so they can see him?

EngagedWithALeaf · 11/11/2017 10:47

Genuine question to people posting - how do you know it shouldn’t be on them?! I work in an office, my husband works in a lab, and we are both allowed to have our phones on us - we also have no fixed β€œbreak times” so can sporadically check/be on our phones during the day, as long as it’s not constant and the work gets done....

kaytee87 · 11/11/2017 10:51

^ agreed, none of my jobs in my professional working life have specified phones aren’t to be used. I’ve always been trusted to get on with the work that needs doing and no boss of mine has had a problem with personal phone or internet use as long as you do your work.
All workplaces are different.

EagleRay · 11/11/2017 10:51

@WhoWants2Know we were both contractors and had no employee rights whatsoever (and wouldn’t want them). The annoying thing was that he was fully aware and utterly refused to acknowledge it or seek help!

kaytee87 · 11/11/2017 10:52

Op I think you should say something to him along the lines of that it’s unfair that he’s sleeping while you’re doing all the work. If he doesn’t apologise and buck up his ideas, then consider reporting him.

MyKingdomForBrie · 11/11/2017 10:58

You really just need to tell him it’s not ok.

lalalalyra · 11/11/2017 11:46

@eagleray Sounds like your former colleague could do with being investigated for narcolepsy or sleep aponea.

If they kept him despite what you said he could have had a health issue.

VivaLeBeaver · 11/11/2017 11:50

Ffs the OP didn't come on here to be told off for posting on mumsnet!

Not 'telling her off' for posting on Mumsnet. Just clearly stating they shouldn't be on the phone. It shouldn't even be on them.

Yes snoring colleague is wrong and lazy. But nothing wrong in pointing out the other rules too.

^^^^

How on earth do people know what the rules at the OPs place of work are? Like I pointed out earlier she could well have been posting while on her break. I work for the NHS and I have no rule about not been allowed my phone on me at work. Infact my boss often rings me on my personal phone as I'm out and about round the hospital and she needs to get hold of me.

Dippydippydora · 11/11/2017 11:52

Yep sleeping and 30 seconds to post on a forum- yep that's the same Hmm

VivaLeBeaver · 11/11/2017 11:54

And on night shifts when there's fewer staff it's harder to take a proper break, you may not be allowed to leave your ward/lab even though you don't get paid for an hour of your shift because there's nobody to cover and if there was an emergency you'd be needed. So if I'm not getting paid for an hour, when there's a good chance I may be working in that unpaid time, nobody would care if social media got checked on sporadically. That's the thing about lab work especially, you might have quiet nights with not much to do apart from stare at the wall or check your phone. But when there's stuff to be dealt with it gets done.

DiegoMadonna · 11/11/2017 12:08

How would you even know that? I can go on my phone/the internet whenever I want at work.

Efferlunt · 11/11/2017 12:10

I’ve fired someone for exactly this. It’s gross misconduct.

NamasteNiki · 11/11/2017 12:13

As for the mobile phone issue my GP has his personal mobile on the desk in personal consultations.

A consultant once took a personal call in front of me during a consultation.

The op is in a lab not facing any patients. Im sure it is fine.

ivykaty44 · 11/11/2017 12:58

I didn’t tell op that she should or shouldn’t be doing something

But pointing out that my own work would class her behaviour as misconduct

Op could find that both of them were in trouble for their behaviour - not just the sleeping co

Witsender · 11/11/2017 13:01

How do you know that Jon? I have never had a job where I wasn't trusted to have a mobile on me, or not allowed to use it as I saw fit.

Bambamber · 11/11/2017 13:03

Do your analysers have loud alarms that you would be responsible for dealing with? I would record the sound of the alarms going off and play it everytime he falls asleep because I'm childish like that

ivykaty44 · 11/11/2017 13:05

Witsender so any employer you have had is happy for you to be on social media in work time?

Many employers would not allow this and could take employees down disciplinary procedures for this behaviour.

Op needs to be aware of her employer policies around this to protect herself

Dreams16 · 11/11/2017 13:10

Report that’s not good and not fair on you why should you do the work and he still get paid for sleeping and doing nothing sorry if he can’t do nights for what ever reason maybe a young child at home to look after or what not maybe he needs to swap shifts not fair on you don’t feel bad to report him

ohfourfoxache · 11/11/2017 13:12

He’s there to work, and by sleeping on the job he’s ensuring that the safety of the service you deliver could easily be compromised.

You need to report him for everyone’s sake.

HateSummer · 11/11/2017 15:01

Hello, just slept 5 hours, so thinking a little bit clearly now! That Tesco comment has me in tears πŸ˜‚

I’m really Hmm about all these phone and social media comments. Where we work, we’re trusted to get the job done efficiently and there are no rules regarding phone use as such. We’re categorically not allowed to watch movies on our phones or obviously take pictures to post, but a quick message or quick use of the phone in the corridor or at the desk holds no problems as long as we’re not wearing gloves. Just to clarify, you can see how many posts I made, I was hardly sitting there mumsnetting non stop, and I’d worked 7 hours prior to that OP.

As to those people making comments about how there’s not enough work for 2 people: there’s always something to do.

As for the colleague, I left him twice to take a drink break during his wakey up time and left him with a pile of work each time, he got the hint not to sleep again. I have addressed his snoring in jest and told him I hear my dh snore all week and I don’t want to come to work and hear snoring aswell. He stopped for a few weeks, but he was back on form last night 😑. I’ll have to say something next week again.

Thanks to everyone else with normal messages of support!

Cockmagic · 11/11/2017 15:50

OP stop whining and report him if you're that bothered.

NamasteNiki · 11/11/2017 16:42

What is it with this site?

I have never seen it anywhere else.

Op comes for a legitimate advice and gets shot down for using her phone amd is committing misconduct herself! Not knowing the terms of her contract.

It's like the thread police. Calling troll etc thinking you are mnhq.

Have any of you got lives?!

Grin
Cockmagic · 11/11/2017 16:52

It is advice.

If she were to record her colleague sleeping and show her boss she could be under disciplinary action for using her phone during work hours.

Yes the sleeping colleague is annoying but she is also in the wrong.
