I cry at the drop of a hat these days but I really can’t see what anybody would find to cry about in this advert Confused

It just made me want to watch Monsters Inc again tbh and I've downloaded it onto our planner to watch with the grandkids over Christmas Grin. It's not very original, given the budget they had.

Mumthedogsbeensick · 11/11/2017 10:42

I much prefer the Very advert with the little girl and the wolf

ShowOfHands · 11/11/2017 10:45

I don't particularly love the advert and haven't enjoyed a JL advert as much as the boy waiting to give a gift one, but I'm surprised people don't "get it". It's about growing up and friendship and self sacrifice and imagination. It's a total rip off of both Sendak and Monsters Inc but the story is clear imho. The monster cherishes their friendship but cherishes his friend's wellbeing more. Chuck in the growing up and imaginary friends going away stuff and it's clear the buttons JL want to press.

I did say to DH however that there'd be cries of "my child can't sleep now thanks JL".

redexpat · 11/11/2017 10:49

I watched it online and got bored. Didnt reslly care enough to want to see the end. I quite liked Paddington though.

puddleduckmummy · 11/11/2017 10:53

Ugh I hate the John Lewis adverts. So mawkish every year, makes me cringe.

Loctite · 11/11/2017 11:29

I didn't get it the first time I watched it either!
It's not very christmassy is it?

falange · 11/11/2017 15:58

Raffle. the boy and the monster were friends. But the playing was making the boy very tired. The monster knew this and so he bought the nightlight for the boy even though he knew the light would make the monster disappear because the monster was only there in the dark. That’s what made me cry.* I’m a bit emotional atm.* No idea why 😁

BikeRunSki · 11/11/2017 16:02

I’m not fussed about the advert itself, but Guy Garvey’s cover of “Golden Slumbers” is perfection.

Bluelonerose · 11/11/2017 16:03

I don't get it either.
Imo it's still not Xmas till I've seen the coke advert Grin

bridgetreilly · 11/11/2017 16:05

At least it wasn't encouraging wild animals to open kids' presents and use them before the kid even had a chance to. That was really weird.

BuzzKillington · 11/11/2017 16:06

I liked it. I always like them.

I always cry too. I think it's as much about the sentimentality of Christmas as the actual ad.

Rheged · 11/11/2017 16:06

I haven’t even watched it, nor am I planning to (I stream most of my TV from Netflix so no adverts). It’s designed to make people want to buy stuff. I really don’t understand how it’s become some sort of ‘event’. John Lewis must be rubbing their hands with glee. The poster who mentioned peak consumerism was spot on.

SexandDrugsandaNiceCuppa · 11/11/2017 16:07

Check out this parody from the poke - far superior Grin

DorisDangleberry · 11/11/2017 16:21

I am really annoyed with it, not least because the Elbow cover of Golden Slumbers is great, and hence I am doubly annoyed that I can't moan about a great song being ruined. What is Christmas coming to if covers are half decent.

Might have to listen to the Nik Knowles album to bring order back to the world

overnightangel · 11/11/2017 16:28

“Might have to listen to the Nik Knowles album to bring order back to the world“

Let’s not do anything silly @Doris Grin

Sammysquiz · 11/11/2017 18:51

I thought it was rubbish. And can’t believe anyone over the age of 5 actually cried over it.

Aliiiii · 11/11/2017 21:29

When I watched it the first time, I thought ‘meh’ having watched it a few more times it’s definitely grown on me
My fav this year is Kevin the carrot GrinGrin
