I just don't get it...

What I took from the advert: the monster gets fed up with playing night after night, sees the child getting tired and sees an opportunity to get away by way of giving the nightlight. Child then gets abandonment issues because his best mate has fucked off without so much as a wave goodbye.

LynetteScavo · 11/11/2017 09:17

When I watched the adverts I just wanted one of those star lamps, so I guess the advert worked in me, as while I'm in JL buying the lamp I'll buy all sorts of other crap I hadn't planned on.

falange · 11/11/2017 09:18

I get it. I think it’s lovely. And yes I shed a tear.

ArgyMargy · 11/11/2017 09:20

YANBU. I don't watch programmes with adverts unless I've recorded them so I can fast forward through them. I've managed not to see any of these hyped up adverts over the last few years. I do love John Lewis though Grin

Aderyn17 · 11/11/2017 09:21

I don't really understand getting excited about an advert - it's sole purpose is to sell you stuff.
As ads go, it was sweet but it is just a cynical ploy to sell you lots of monster merchandise.
I think I'm slightly insulted by the lack of subtlety.

falange · 11/11/2017 09:21

The star lamp (which I want for myself) is out of stock already on the JL website btw.

raffle · 11/11/2017 09:22

Falange, what is the sad bit tho? That the monster left? Kid didn’t look arsed about that tbh?

PodgeBod · 11/11/2017 09:25

Advert was ok but it didn’t feel like anything special. I did want a star light though, they’re out of stock now.

hungryradish · 11/11/2017 09:28

I agree. It nice, but that's it really.

hungryradish · 11/11/2017 09:28

*it's

PoppyPopcorn · 11/11/2017 09:29

Haven't seen it. Have no desire to see it. Actively avoid ads at the best of time thanks to the wonders of catch-up tv and the fast forward button, so why would I seek out one particular ad?

Plus, it's SIX WEEKS until Christmas and this consumer greedfest appears to be starting earlier each year.

I do feel sorry for the American academic who uses the @johnlewis twitter handle and gets deluged each year by people telling him how amazing he is.

MaisyPops · 11/11/2017 09:32

Mum let’s kid open random present come from nowhere, and monster commits suicide
Grin

DH and i were talking about it. I don't get it
Boy scared about monster under the bed
Monster and boy become fun
Boy gets tired
Monster kills himself

On the plus side, I'm quite happy that thr music isn't some woman trying to cover a song sounding like a whiny, breathy little girl. Grin

IceRebel · 11/11/2017 09:38

I really didn't like the advert, it feels like they only made it to market to products that go alongside it. I know other years there have been products too, but adverts like Monty the penguin told lovely stories and stood on their own.

Whereas this advert; in my opinion, feels like they came up with a character and thought sod the advert, people will buy the merchandise anyway. I didn't get a message and it didn't really feel like a Christmas advert, if it hadn't been so hyped up I wouldn't have even looked twice.

I much preferred the mouse and the fox advert, that felt more like a John Lewis ad than the Moz monstrosity they released.

CourtneyLoveIsMySpiritAnimal · 11/11/2017 09:41

Didn’t really ‘get’ it but then I’m not a fan of these mawkish, sad, slow version of a pop song type xmas adverts.

There were loads of replies to it on Twitter saying they’d cried their eyes out, now my makeup is ruined etc etc. Really? Do people actually cry at this shit?

PoppyPopcorn · 11/11/2017 09:49

The huns do. Because it reminds them how #blessed they are and how Chrimbobobs is all about #makingmemories with their #amazingkids.

Of COURSE adverts are about selling product. The John Lewis marketing department are doing a fantastic job in creating a buzz around the release of the advert and keeping their brand in the front of everyone's mind, more than Debenhams, or M&S or any other department store brand. Their Christmas sales are consistently stronng on the back of their advert, sales of whatever gimmicky toy they have come up with are secondary.

It's all a bit like the Next sale - very average offering, but the hype created around it is enough to persuade people to get out of bed at stupid o'clock for a glorified jumble sale.

AtSea1979 · 11/11/2017 09:52

I didn't like it at all. Buy a nightlight or you'll have a monster under your bed. I will not be showing this to my children unless I want sleepless nights.

Commuterface · 11/11/2017 09:56

I like the Paddington one and the Aldi carrot. I do find JL ones a bit too sentimental and not really that Christmassy

forceslover · 11/11/2017 09:59

I love all the Christmas adverts, makes me feel all warm and cosy, or is it mulled wine 😜

MoistCantaloupe · 11/11/2017 10:04

@maisypops this isn’t one of my major pet hates so you’re right, at least we don’t have a classic tune ruined by some over the top feminine singing to accompany!

MoistCantaloupe · 11/11/2017 10:05

Is a pet hate, not isn’t....

Mooncuplanding · 11/11/2017 10:10

Pile of wank

Only thing I thought was "why is the monster getting really fat?"

And "those light things are shit. Bought one ages ago and it was shit"

minmooch · 11/11/2017 10:14

Am I the only one who has yet to see it? I don’t watch much tv though ........

PurpleAlerts · 11/11/2017 10:15

I didn't really get it- the significance of the star light projector was rather lost on me... Confused

I liked the penguin JL ad a few years back but my favourite was the one about the little boy waiting for Christmas and you are led to believe that he can't wait for his presents when it is actually him wanting to give a gift to his family. I can't imagine that was such a high budget ad but was my favourite by far.

The one last year I found a bit creepy to be honest. Old man spying on a little girl in her bedroom? Confused

Caspiana · 11/11/2017 10:18

@purplealerts

I agree. The penguins and the little boy who can’t wait to give gifts are the best by far. They did bring a tear to my eye.

This year - worst one yet. Not Christmassy and a bit confusing and pointless. It is great to see a mixed race family but the substance of the advert is crap.

QueenNovo · 11/11/2017 10:26

I don't like this year's either, the monster doesn't appeal to me at all. I liked the penguin one and the bear and the hare but not this one.
