to think that most women look better with a little make-up?

Not a lot, just a little tinted moisturiser, mascara and a lip colour. I know I do, but I don't do it often - just evenings out and certainly not for the school run/work or daily life.

So why do people trowel it on? Once you can see the make-up it's like wearing a mask. I know that people get used to seeing themselves with a fake face, but surely easing off a bit would be beneficial?

When did it become the norm for young teenagers to wear a full face of heavy make-up?

It seems such a peculiar thing to do.

It's not only young people following a trend. Almost all women in the public eye now wear lots of makeup, including very red lipstick.
This is their public persona so I, as one of the public, am entitled to have a view about it and to decide I think it looks awful.

A lot of men might look better for a bit of makeup too. Why don't they use it?

kw1091 · 09/11/2017 12:01

I always wonder why something that doesn’t affect other people bothers them so much.
Same goes for tattoos and piercings. It’s not your face/skin so why do you care?!
Get a hobby.

specialsubject · 09/11/2017 12:01

thick makeup with red and black circles make everyone look rough as guts and ten years older. Which is why teens wear it, to get served in pubs.

But the silly idea that no female should leave the house without some coating of smelly sticky stuff makes me want to vomit. I note this doesn't apply to men.

slap up if you want.

Clandestino · 09/11/2017 12:02

I think it has just become the fashion for young people right now.
Smile
I was a teenager in the 80s. The sickeningly blue eyeshadow (and I'm not even talking about the fatty one), pink glossy lipsticks, blue or green mascara. Compared with the 80s, young people nowadays are the embodiment of sophistication.
I don't use any make-up because I have totally sensitive eyes which get teary very easily, a bit of a wind or a headache are enough. Lovingly remember the days when I was walking around like a resurrected Cleopatra.

Annabelle4 · 09/11/2017 12:02

I think most of the young women you're referring to look great, as in, their technique is very good.

There are girls walking around during the day in my town who look like they've been to a makeup artist.

It must be a lot of hassle, time consuming and possibly bad for their skin, but we wore hair mascara, coffee/plum lipsticks, blue eyeshadow, regardless of our complexion etc when we were younger. I'm sure I looked ridiculous.

haarlandgoddard · 09/11/2017 12:05

I definitely look better with more make up on. Whenever I only put a little bit on like you describe people tell me I ‘look tired’ so they obviously agree!

chirpyburbycheapsheep · 09/11/2017 12:06

I once heard a make-up artist say that foundation should look like your natural skin, only 'better' (whatever that means)...I do think good quality foundation which sort of sinks into the skin rather than sits on top in a kind of mask makes a real difference

I wear make-up but feel it should accentuate features no obliterate them...I actually enjoy the ritual of applying my makeup, of subtly evening my skin tone, opening up my eyes.....but each to their own...I saw a woman with extraordinary drawn on eyebrows on the tube the other day...she'd drawn them in an enormous thick ark so it they almost met in the middle of her brow....I found them....interesting....but if she likes them then go for it.....

fantasmasgoria1 · 09/11/2017 12:06

I don’t do the contouring stuff but as an alternative I like it as part of the image!

LardLizard · 09/11/2017 12:09

I hate to agree, but I do agree with you op

Nearly everyone looks better with a bit of lip balm
Tinted moisturiser and dark brown mascara

It’s odd how I think This about women though and not men
Must be social conditioning !

t1mum3 · 09/11/2017 12:09

I rarely wear any make up now but loved wearing white face make up, red or black lips, black nail varnish and TONs of eyeliner when I was a teenager. It was a way of expressing myself and I will laugh hilariously but secretly love it if any of my DC decide to follow in my footsteps (especially the boys).

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 09/11/2017 12:16

I probably do look better with a little make but that would be to colour in my eyelashes and eyebrows, both of which are pale to non-existent.

Mostly I can't be bothered as I wear glasses anyway. When I was wearing contact lenses, I did bother more with the small amount of eye make up, but not any more.

I do wear make up to go out, but just the eyes and lipstick. The only time I've used full face foundation etc. was for weddings (mine and other people's) or on stage (a rarity)

Pandsbear · 09/11/2017 12:18

Each to their own really isn’t it. I do look better with some makeup on - getting older means I need to draw in my faded face a bit more. But I have an illness that affects my eyes so I can’t wear any eye make up apart from about twice per year and then I suffer for it for the next few days, I am sad that I can’t wear all the make up I like anymore - so I probably look like a non make up woman to everyone.
The caked on faces currently in fashion are interesting. I always notice that their hands are a completely different colour to their face.

Jaxhog · 09/11/2017 12:21

This so frustrates me. Who cares? I so wish people wouldn't judge other people by how they look, whether they have a 'little makeup' or no makeup! There is so much more to people than this. Get a life, for goodness sake.

Ttbb · 09/11/2017 12:22

Agreed. If you can see it then that defeats the purpose.

SomethingNewToday · 09/11/2017 12:22

Sorry but the state I've seen plenty of eyebrows in could, IMO, easily cause double takes and therefore accidents due to people being distracted. I think it's a social duty to be 'bothered' and try to stop the madness.

Eyebrows are just beyond nowadays...so many people looking like they've used a Sharpie on them. Why?

wasonthelist · 09/11/2017 12:23

YANBU most women look better with no makeup

SukiTheDog · 09/11/2017 12:25

I like to be able to see skin (my skin) but I use blush, lippie and mascara. Every day. Rain or shine. I think I look much much better “with”. When younger, I wore more but never trowelled, as the fashion is today. Fashions come and go.

potatoscowls · 09/11/2017 12:25

Some people dont apply makeup to look attractive per se, they do it because they use it as a creative outlet or because it feels like armour

DistanceCall · 09/11/2017 12:26

Young people are experimenting with make-up and with the way in which they present themselves. Make-up is not just about making yourself look better - it's about having fun and experimenting, too.

That said, I agree that these days there is also the pressure of having to "look perfect" (i.e. like a Kardashian or similar).

1Mother20152015 · 09/11/2017 12:33

I very rarely wear any and think most people look better with none on at all.

maddiemookins16mum · 09/11/2017 12:34

Blimey I do, but have never mastered the skill of applying even the most basic make up. The first and last time I wore a full face of make up was my wedding day and I looked flippin lovely (even if I say so myself).
Now I use a sweep of face powder to even my skin tone and some tinted lip gloss stuff. That's my lot.

Sienna333 · 09/11/2017 12:44

Only woman I know who doesn't wear make up looks 17 at 33

Goldenbear · 09/11/2017 12:51

I sometimes wear a bit of mascara and always lip balm. However, I have just turned 40 and think I look younger when I don't wear mascara. I have quite long eye lashes but they're blond/brown so I would use the mascara for definition. I find good skincare products make the most difference. I like the Neals yard stuff especially with geranium and rose.

Thurlow · 09/11/2017 12:55

I agree that some quality foundation that matches your skin tone, and some mascara, are probably going to brighten up most peoples faces.

However there's no need for anyone to do this if they don't want to.

Tippz · 09/11/2017 12:55

Not really any of your business how much make up people put on is it? Hmm

Just another stick to beat with with! Angry
