to think that nobody died from travelling backwards on a train?

Why do people make a fuss about this? The trains I travel on aren’t full, so I get to watch this pantomime of ninnies quite frequently.

Today I’m facing in the direction of travel at a table seat, empty seat beside me and two empty seats on the opposite side of the table. A couple get on, she sits opposite me and he insists I move my bag (the train is less than 50% occupied) so he can sit beside me.

I’m considering doing some man-spreading, even though I’m not one.

I never used to get travel sick on any type of transport.

Since coming through the Menopause, that's changed. I love train travel (and use local trains as well as long distance) and keep trying sitting backwards, but it is definitely happening. I then have to swap with whoever I'm traveling with. I'm more sensitive to speed in a car and the take-off on a plane.

I've never understood why the behaviour of others interests people, to the point were they will insult/question them, if it isn't majorly impacting on them.

SoupDragon · 10/11/2017 07:08

No-one faces backwards on a plane

They do and have to pay more for it - sleeper seats in business/first are mixed forwards and backwards.

CPtart · 10/11/2017 07:15

I've stood before rather than go backwards. So nauseating.

HemlockStarglimmer · 10/11/2017 08:12

After reading this thread I now feel very fortunate that I can travel backwards, sideways and in the backs of cars without feeling sick. Although I cannot read in the back on a twisty road or at night.

I had to travel in the back of a two door car recently to allow my younger, slimmer, non-arthritic relative to sit in the front and not puke. The only way to get in was to crawl and the only way to get out was backwards. I’m so glad it was dark!

As long as I can see that we’re moving I seem to be ok. So I stay on deck as much as possible on ships.
And once on coach in the channel tunnel I felt ghastly until I found a tiny window to look out of. Just being able to see a fraction of the wall as we raced by was enough.

Flatscissors · 10/11/2017 17:42

OP You’re being unreasonable for assuming the seat is put there for your bag. It is not. It is for another person.

Booboo66 · 10/11/2017 17:44

I feel awful if I travel backwards. Even for short journeys on the local bus let alone long train journeys. Feeling nauseous and dizzy and not quite with it is no fun when you are travelling as the only adult with 2 lively young children so I prefer to face forward 🙂

WittyDaddyUsername · 10/11/2017 17:44

I prefer going backwards. I think it's safer as trains don't have seat belts....

pollymere · 10/11/2017 17:45

It's actually safer to ride backwards but you're far more likely to suffer from motion sickness. Some people get really bad vertigo. I don't so I'd probably move myself and my bag to be rear facing and let them have the seat they wanted.

pollymere · 10/11/2017 17:47

Then of course they can sit together.

MommaL · 10/11/2017 17:48

I get car sick in the back.....and going backwards on trains, and on busses.

So it does happen.

MrsRonaldWeasley · 10/11/2017 17:53

If you and your bag want to sit alone don't sit at a table seat 🤔

Groovee · 10/11/2017 17:56

I struggle to not be sick travelling backwards. And your bag didn’t pay for a seat, so you don’t need a seat for your bag.

cloudspotter · 10/11/2017 18:03

I was about to say don't see the fuss myself, then noticed all the posts from other people saying how they are affected.

Now I just feel bloody lucky I don't have any such problems. Shock

MiaowMix · 10/11/2017 18:05

I get such bad motion sickness even reading this thread is making me feel sick!
Dd and I suffer really badly going backwards or in back seat of cars. 🤢

If foodtime is a dr then I’m a banana btw.🍌

If she/he really is a dr I feel genuinely sorry for her patients.

DullAndOld · 10/11/2017 18:06

tbh people that need a whole seat next to them for their bag piss me off so much tht i couldnt really read the rest of ur post.

Formeressexgirl · 10/11/2017 18:11

Being a daily commuter, people putting bags on seats and then making a fuss about moving them is FAR more offensive! I hope he man spread you good and proper.

mummyof3kids · 10/11/2017 18:11

If you want to purchase a ticket for your bag that would solve the problem as you could show ticket to show seat is “taken”. Otherwise it is no-ones business to question why another person would choose to sit in any particular seat! The reasons someone chooses a particular seat are many and varied. I have had others join me on a long journey where they have got on at another station and I have choose seat convenient to us as meeting point. Sometimes I want to sit close to buffet carriage or loo. Other times I have chosen seat that is convenient for when I get off at particular station (especially when I have short time between catching another train). Sometimes destination station platform is short and I avoid end carriages as you can’t disembark. Other people may have lucky side or lucky number. When I was a child my safety conscious (and possibly on autistic spectrum) dad used to tell me to sit in middle on left of buses for example. This was based on his work in lorry and bus repairs and write offs. His perception was this is where you would be most likely to survive or be less injured in the event of a really serious accident.

Branleuse · 10/11/2017 18:13

im sure its already been said in the previous 4 pages but I get quite travel sick if I sit facing backwards, so would really rather not. Hope this helps

pieceofpurplesky · 10/11/2017 18:14

Both me and DS would have vomited all over you and your bag if we had to travel backwards.... this actually happened once to a woman who was sat in our booked seats and before I knew DS was like me! She sat forward facing (I had booked three seats 2 forward and one back for exh). Train was rammed and that was the only seat (but not the one she was sat in). She tutted all journey at us and only moved when DS threw up all over her laptop Grin

Ontheboardwalk · 10/11/2017 18:26

I don't understand people who sit on a table seat then tut and mutter if someone sits next to them.

A table seat is a prime seat in any direction. The odds are someone will sit next to you on your journey.

Best way to get an empty seat next to you is to sit on a backwards facing double seat, all the vomiting people will walk straight past - problem solved.

LoniceraJaponica · 10/11/2017 18:27

When I was on a crowded train from York to Leeds during the rush hour recently the conductor announced our imminent arrival to Leeds, and requested that everyone removed their bags from spare seats as they were meant for people to sit on.

Maireadplastic · 10/11/2017 18:29

Probably no one has died, OP, but I can guarantee my niece would throw up on you and/or your bag if she didn't have a sick bag on her.

Redguitar2 · 10/11/2017 18:29

OP you sound like an idiot Biscuit

Maireadplastic · 10/11/2017 18:29

glitterlips1 · 10/11/2017 18:30

It is something I have never even thought about until recently when someone I knew started making a fuss about the direction she was sat on the train.
