to think that nobody died from travelling backwards on a train?

Why do people make a fuss about this? The trains I travel on aren’t full, so I get to watch this pantomime of ninnies quite frequently.

Today I’m facing in the direction of travel at a table seat, empty seat beside me and two empty seats on the opposite side of the table. A couple get on, she sits opposite me and he insists I move my bag (the train is less than 50% occupied) so he can sit beside me.

I’m considering doing some man-spreading, even though I’m not one.

I was calling bullshit on posters who claim they vomit uncontrollably 20secs after boarding a train.

Nobody actually claimed that though did they? At least not until you “called bullshit” and posters then felt the need to defend themselves.

Didn’t you also post something about people exaggerating? #potkettle

RaspberryOverload · 09/11/2017 13:58

DS and I don't have travel sickness, so we are fine in any seat. DD, OTOH, definitly does get travel sick, and when we were still with Ex, we had to stop a few times on long journeys to allow her to recover enough to carry on, and she's been sick more than once.

Now, we don't have to bother with Ex, and she sits in the front. Hardly ever feels sick now, it really makes a difference.

So I get cross when I see people pooh poohing travel sickness, DD was in no way making it up.

Hahaha! 😂

Do please volunteer as a helper on a daytrip with your local school. Let me know how long it takes before one throws up on you, and then another two rows back. Now the girl at the side of you is feeling queasy and oh shit where did you put that other sick bag!

Adults still have the same thing. HTH.

YouthsAStuffWillNotEndure · 09/11/2017 14:34

This is the reason I always offer to be the driver if I'm going somewhere with a group of people all in one car - it's the best way of making sure I don't have to sit in the back where I know I will get queasy. Feeling sick in the back of cars is very common so you can be certain more than one person will have this reason to want to be the front seat passenger, so this way I know I'll be OK and they can fight it out amongst themselves!

LoniceraJaponica · 09/11/2017 14:35

I have had to google pendolino train as I have never seen one or been on one. I don't think we get them through Sheffield.

Funny where are all these kids?

I was at school, I dont remember every coach trip being a mexican wave of vomiting in every row.

Far from it.

YouthsAStuffWillNotEndure · 09/11/2017 14:41

mexican wave of vomiting Grin

Queeniebed · 09/11/2017 14:43

Just move your bags and stop whinging

That's your experience of your one slint at school. Other posters have different experiences. It's not hard to grasp if you think about it.

I remeber 2 kids throwing up at the back of the bus. It ran/flowed forward, like a stinky sea of doom. It was everywhere. Someone shed a shoe trying to get to the upper floor. It set the whole bus off. Ah memories.

RhiannonOHara · 09/11/2017 14:55

I don't remember one school trip on a coach that DIDN'T feature at least one person yakking up.

SomewhatIdiosyncratic · 09/11/2017 14:58

I knew a baby who despised travelling backwards and would scream and scream until he vomited or stopped breathing. The moment he was physically big enough to be turned around to face forwards he was perfectly happy to travel for the first time.
Obviously all in the mind, those pesky babies and their mind games Wink

I'm much more likely to get queasy in the back of a car. As a small person who gets defaulted to sitting in the back as a car fills up, I wonder if the air quality has an effect as much as the logistics of seeing out.

I'm more comfortable facing forward on a train, but will accept travelling backwards if I have to. Travelling backwards in a taxi hurtling around is a real test of my digestive system though!

JacquesHammer · 09/11/2017 15:00

My bag does need a seat because I'm working and I need to be able to access it for various things

I'm a VERY important WORKING person I want you all to see me WORKING because I am so important. Look at me WORK.

RightOnTheEdge · 09/11/2017 15:01

I have always been really travel sick. I feel really sick, sweaty and dizzy. I was always sick everywhere we went on coaches or in the back of a car.
I used to be fine on trains or in the front of cars. Everyone always said I would grow out of it but I didn't. It's actually getting worse. I feel sick in the front and on trains even really short journeys. It's starting to make every journey a misery.

Does anybody, maybe the lovely, sympathetic GP up thread Hmm have any ideas why?
I've tried travel sickness tablets but they don't seem to make much difference. I feel awful afterwards until I can lie down and sleep.

RightOnTheEdge · 09/11/2017 15:03

MrsDinosaurButtocks · 09/11/2017 15:07

RightOnTheEdge the only thing I found that works are the anti nausea migraine tablets. I take a double dose, and I'm fine. My GP says it's ok to do this, but I'd check with your GP first.

cluelessnewmum · 09/11/2017 15:07

Sounds like you have bad train etiquette, OP.

The forward facing table seats are the most sought after on the train so you can't expect someone jog to sit next to you if you choose that seat.

If you want to sit alone, choose the backwards facing two seaters as you're apparently lucky enough to not get sick facing backwards.

I don't take the table seats if alone unless I've (rarely) needed it for a laptop as I leave them for group / families.

JonSnowsWife · 09/11/2017 15:10

No it doesn't. The overack for the luggage right above your head within easy reach allows you to do that like most unentitled people.

Xeneth88 · 09/11/2017 15:12

Grin amazing!

justforthisthread101 · 09/11/2017 15:13

Oh yes Somewhat, London black cabs backwards are horrific. After an incident where I had to leap out at lights, one colleague in particular roars at anyone who goes for the comfy seats to let me sit in one! And she always goes rear facing so I don't have to.

I'm shocked at all these posters poo-pooing the notion of travel sickness. We're not making it up! Honest!

pearlsandsmiles3 · 09/11/2017 15:14

*afrikat I agree. Bags do not need seats. Why do so many people think their bags need seats? boggles the mind.

OP , I am guessing the man had motion sickness. Or he really fancied you.

pearlsandsmiles3 · 09/11/2017 15:16

JonSnowsWife Indeed. Unless the OP has a disability meaning she cannot reach the bag from the overhead locker or the floor or keep it on her lap for some reason.

pearlsandsmiles3 · 09/11/2017 15:17

africat and JonSnowsWife I think that in time "your bag doesn;t need a seat" will become a MumsNettism like penisbeaker or mexicanhousethief

StormTreader · 09/11/2017 15:26

I need various things from my bag on a long train trip - phone charger, book, drink, headphones. I use the revolutionary system of getting them all out of my bag to start with, and then putting my bag in the overhead storage.

sparechange · 09/11/2017 15:28

I bet all the 'motion sickness is just attention seeking' posters are the same ones that bleat 'Oh, I had morning sickness as well but I just got on with it' whenever they hear about someone hospitalised with HG...

shhhfastasleep · 09/11/2017 15:30

Motion sickness Meister here. I feel sick even on short journeys.
But the bag thing? Buy a seat for your bag. This is public transport not your own private limo. Yes it is awkward using the overhead shelf thing, particularly if you are a short arse like me. Suck it up or pay for a taxi/limo/Lear jet.
