After weeks of nagging him to tidy his room, I hid the Xbox power cable. DS1 was up to 3am or so that very day tidying his room. Happy days!

Wifi password works for DS2, particularly at the end of the month when his phone data is low.

Sparklingbrook · 08/11/2017 09:01

The PS4 controller has also enjoyed shopping with me.

We have Sky and I don't think we can mess with the password.

nomad5 · 08/11/2017 09:03

I would learn how to change password - find the model number of the router (It'll be on the back of it or underneath) and look online for the manual. You can then change daily.

In the meantime unplug and take the power cable with you!!

Orangebird69 · 08/11/2017 09:04

Sparkling, you can indeed!

Bowerbird5 · 08/11/2017 09:04

Love that you took it shopping.

Can remember biding my time and after they had gone on the bus next morning removed whole Xbox. Hid it at friends and they were without it for a week.
They have turned into lovely, hard-working adults😀
I feel for you with teenagers but stick to it as it does work. Don't cave in or they will do it again and again. Stay strong!

@catsarenice I did this to DD then realised she had 4G blush

No problem. Just take away the chargers.

LadyPeterWimsey · 08/11/2017 09:09

We have something called KoalaSafe, which is hardware that plugs into the router. It means I can control both their ability to get online, and what they can access when they get there, from my phone. No need to fiddle with the router, and I can turn it on or cut them off from across town, if I need to.

Stroppy teenager slams door and tramps upstairs - WiFi gone before they reach their bedroom. And it has a homework mode so I can allow them Spotify and homework websites, without enabling them to Netflix themselves to death. I’ve set a schedule so that it all goes off at a certain time of night, as well.

It’s not popular, but it works.

dantdmistedious · 08/11/2017 09:10

This reminds me of mum - she used to go to work with all the phones from the house in the boot of her car so we couldn't arrange to go out.

I haven't reached wifi turning off stage with mine yet but I'm sure it will happen.

pinkingshears · 08/11/2017 09:12

CoughLaughFart
Hmmm... He is ASD and a tech genius. He will get up at night and change the OS, link all screens to a new network, build a server etc
I am 'dyslexic' re tech. I can manage MN and a bit of tinternet but thats it. Therefore he is constantly '1 (hundred) step(s) ahead'.
Hence my coming here to ask for step by step help which I was aware would make me look like a tech muppet but not a parenting one Grin

I've also unplugged the router and left it in the boot of my car whilst at work.

Sparklingbrook · 08/11/2017 09:14

Ooh thanks Orange will have a look at that.

BikeRunSki · 08/11/2017 09:15

I used to have a line manager who covered 3 offices across the N of Engjand and was away much of the week. He always took his kids’ device chargers, cables etc with him

pinkingshears · 08/11/2017 09:19

Thinking about it - my issue is that his ASD means he NEEDS his tech after school etc to 'wind down' much more than many nt kids.

But then the issue is getting him off to eg: shower / eat / bed etc.

The answer would be to get him to shower straight after school but he simply couldnt cope with that.

Putting all devices in boot of car etc is impractical as I am physically disabled (and he is considerably bigger than me).

So, instructions re ch anging code sounds like the best suggestion yet.

I could have done with something like Koalasafe when mine were younger LadyPeterWimsey.

Newmanwannabe · 08/11/2017 09:31

This is only for apple and not wifi but works well.... I send out a "find my iPhone" beep to the iPod and iPad. Usually gets a response. If not then I put it in lost mode Along with a message. "Do the dishes" "have a shower" ect Works every time Grin

Newmanwannabe · 08/11/2017 09:34

And the threat of erasure is very real.... (not that I would but they don't need to know that)

CigarsofthePharoahs · 08/11/2017 09:37

We had SplashTop for a while. Hilarious watching my 6 year old freak out when using the computer, when I was actually controlling it from a tablet!
Currently all school homework is online so I need to leave the internet on, but I can well imagine taking the router for a day out in the future!

ThisNameNow · 08/11/2017 09:37

Pinking
There are plenty of very simple guides to how to change the internet password and how to set up some parental restrictions. The BT ones are very easy to use. Do you really want your DS to have completely unrestricted use of the internet?

At the very least you could have the wifi turn itself off at midnight or whenever you think is appropriate.

If you genuinely can't do it yourself then get someone to help you. As long as you keep the password to the parental controls secret then you will be ok.

Roomba · 08/11/2017 09:43

I have before now unplugged the router and taken it out shopping with me because of stroppy teens.

I remember my friend's Dad removing the fuse from the TV and taking it to work with him due to stroppy behaviour and non revision. She worked out how to put a new fuse in, so the next day he removed a transistor or capacitor (or some similar bit that was inside old TVs, he was an electrician) instead Grin

MammaTJ · 08/11/2017 09:54

The lovely lady who walks my dog has made me get up some days by turning off my wi-fi. She has done it accidentally (I think) when she has come in and seen a lamp left on. It is plugged into the same extension lead as the router and she seems to switch it off at the plug. I have been unable to play my games that waste my day, or MN or FB, so have had to get up and sort it. Grin

willyougotobed · 08/11/2017 09:57

It's reminding me of that joke. How do you call a family meeting? Unplug the router and stand next to it.

Jins · 08/11/2017 09:59

I changed the password once. So he reset the router and changed the password so I couldn't use it. Grin

The only way is to physically remove the router. Anything else can be bypassed in my experience.

JWrecks · 08/11/2017 09:59

I love hearing all of the things you've all taken out shopping with you! I too have had to take the router and leave it in the boot, but I've never had the full armload of devices! I love it!

Teenagers...

Flomper · 08/11/2017 10:08

I have 3 children and on one particularly fraught day of HT I gathered up all devices with internet access (particularly you tube) in order to make them get off screens and do something else and stop arguing. I left the house with a laundry bad containing: 2 playstation controllers, 2 ipads, an android tablet, a nintendo switch, a wiiU controller, 2 mobile phones, 2 laptops and 3 nintendo ds! I think I also could have been arrested for burglary! I then went to starbucks for a nice calm coffee.

And when I came back guess what they were doing? Theyd found my ancient old antique Game and Watch and were playing parachute!

When you get really proficient you can turn off individual devices from the wifi which is fun, our PS4 often mysteriously loses its connection to the internet while everything else is fine.
