To spend nearly 3k on new sofas?

The sofas in our house have seen better days. 2 are over 15 years old, they were expensive at the time but are now worn and battered, the seats are worn so I have to keep . The other is newer but was only ever bought as a cheap temporary measure.

So I feel time has come to replace them. I've been to see ( yes I know not everyone's a fan) and seen a couple of ranges I like. But by the time I've bought 3 sofas and s footsrool it's basically £2600-2700. Which is a lot of money. But if they last another 15 years isn't much per year really.

So wibu to go and buy them? If I order this week I can get them by Christmas. Hoping I can also get the 4 years interest free credit too.

Do you have a Fenwick near you? I was going to say your money your choice but dfs isn't a company I associate with things that will last. That's a lot of money from them

Justabadwife · 08/11/2017 07:48

If you have found one you like, then go for it. My mum has just spent a similar amount on a leather sofa and 2 chairs from dfs, but they took months to arrive. They gave her a date, and then changed it twice.
I'm hopefully getting a new sofa next year, I love my sofa but it's gross, suede is not the way to go with a child. 😂😂😂

ghostyslovesheets · 08/11/2017 07:48

So much anti DFS feeling Grin

I suspect they are seen as a bit 'naff' but I have always used them and never had an issue - well made reasonably priced sofas

PandorasXbox · 08/11/2017 07:49

OP look for somewhere that sells Duresta that does interest free.

Honestly you won’t find a more comfier, well made sofa anywhere. They are more expensive but will last forever.

HRTpatch · 08/11/2017 07:50

Me too ghosty
Had my previous sofas for 15 years from there. Still mint condition....sold them on for a good price.
The M and S chairs we had were shocking. Despite staff discount 😀

somewhereovertherain · 08/11/2017 07:51

Don’t think you’re being unreasonable on the cost but wouldn’t be going anywhere near Dfs or any of the chains.

We spent about that 17 years ago still in fantastic condition from a local business. And will change them in a year or two. Theirs now way a dfs sofa would last more than 4-6 years.

ItMustBeBedtimeSurely · 08/11/2017 07:54

The amount is reasonable but not at dfs.

TammyswansonTwo · 08/11/2017 07:56

We have the comfiest corner sofa on earth, came from made.com - don't think I'd touch DFS personally, the quality sucks

cheeseandbiscuitsplease1 · 08/11/2017 07:56

Don't buy the tesco one you need to try it out before you buy! I also think there's DFS snobbery here, if you like it, It's comfortable and you can afford it buy it. Don't buy cream though if you have young children (I learnt my lesson and will never by cream again!)

LakieLady · 08/11/2017 07:57

I wouldn't buy anything from DFS. I've seen too many DFS sofas that are clapped out after 3 years and still not paid for.

DP told me once that DFS don't make any money on their sofas and that all their profit is made on the exorbitant interest paid by those who don't clear the whole debt within the specified period. He says the FS bit of the name stands for financial services.

He may, however, have been talking crap (which he does, from time to time) or winding me up (which he also does from time to time).

SilverSpot · 08/11/2017 07:59

I don’t think dfS is over priced actually. Pretty cheap compared to loads of other sofa shops!

Their pricing just takes into account the ‘interest free credit’.

Laiste · 08/11/2017 08:05

We spent 2k on 2 mahoosive white (i know) sofas from DFS about 10 years ago.

The seats have collapsed a bit now but i don't feel they owe us anything.

AgnesBrownsCat · 08/11/2017 08:22

Go to an independent furniture shop and look at the Alston sofas . Similar price to what you are looking at but will last 20 years easily and still look good .

WomblingThree · 08/11/2017 08:23

It isn’t “snobbery” about DFS. It’s the fact that they build in the “free” credit to the initial price, so you are paying £1000 for a £500 sofa. Half the time the sofa won’t even last until you’ve finished paying for it. It’s almost as bad as bloody Brighthouse.

I spent just under £2k on 2 huge fully motorised reclining sofas from a local independent company. I expect them to last at least 20 years though, not 5-10.

AgnesBrownsCat · 08/11/2017 08:23

I also have a small leather sofa in my kitchen from Ikea which is wearing incredibly well for the price . Think it was £500

ShotsFired · 08/11/2017 08:29

One depressing side note, I regularly walk past a Brighthouse-alike resell store and the window always has at least 3 of those swivel chairs in, ready to be resold at a stupid markup (beyond the first markup that DFS put on for the poor person who eventually had to sell their sofa for cash).

I also once watched a house moving show where the couple were emigrating and the chap paid absolutely stupid money for container space for one of these chairs.

Callmegeoff · 08/11/2017 08:31

Have you looked at local selling sites ? This time of year is really good, as folke like to get new for Christmas. We bought a Collins and Hayes L shaped sofa for £200 -it was originally 2 or 3 grand (can't remember) I'm considering having it upholstered.

My other sofa (dfs) is 12 years old and pristine condition btw.

fascicle · 08/11/2017 08:37

Another vote for waiting for the sales. I have two oversized, very comfortable sofas from M & S reduced from £1100 to £550 each in a January sale approx 11 years ago.

Sonearandyetsofa · 08/11/2017 09:10

What's putting me off just doing the job for 1k with Tesco is that I want to actually sit on the sofa before it's in my house. If I could only afford 1k that's what I'd do. But I can afford what I want at DFS...

I do take the point 're quality. However the same stuff is more money elsewhere- the chaise/ lounger sofa I like that is £800 in DFS...The sofology equivalent is £1300...

Re local selling sites, ebay, gumtree etc. It is so unlikely I'd find what I need (chaise sofa, 3 seater, footstool and 2 seater or swivel chair ) all in good condition and in a colour I like. Lots of people have a 3 seater and a 2, or a chaise and swivel. But I've never seen anyone selling everything. And even if they did, I know what colour I want (light gray) how likely is it they'd be that colour too?

Honestly I don't think I can accomplish the task unless I buy new. However I will check a couple of other retailers before committing to anything with DFS!

Have you looked at IKEA? Our sofa is almost ten years old and still going.

dantdmistedious · 08/11/2017 09:14

Our last sofas were £2k 12 years ago from Next and have put up with a lot of abuse from the dog and DTs. It's not unreasonable at all if you can afford it. Sure you can get second hand ones if you want but if you want new ones then get them.

angieloumc · 08/11/2017 09:34

I've got a 2 seater and 3 seater chaise from DFS, bought it 6 years ago and it still looks great. Though I must say I wouldn't get scatter back cushions again, too much puffing up!
If you can afford it and like them why not? Don't get this snobbery about DFS myself.

Stopyourhavering · 08/11/2017 15:34

We got 2 gorgeous huge squashy sofas 22 yrs ago from Sofaworkshop ( Tetrad make I think)
They were v expensive at the time , but are only now needing replaced!
We got loose washable covers which are brilliant and change the look of the room every 6 months

Allthebestnamesareused · 08/11/2017 16:28

DFS ones will not last you 15 years!

Allthebestnamesareused · 08/11/2017 16:31

Have a look at MultiYork when they have their sales on. We also got interest free credit through them.

They also let you chose the design and then the seat, back and cushion firmness/softness etc for the style you chose and hundreds of fabrics.
