To spend nearly 3k on new sofas?

The sofas in our house have seen better days. 2 are over 15 years old, they were expensive at the time but are now worn and battered, the seats are worn so I have to keep . The other is newer but was only ever bought as a cheap temporary measure.

So I feel time has come to replace them. I've been to see ( yes I know not everyone's a fan) and seen a couple of ranges I like. But by the time I've bought 3 sofas and s footsrool it's basically £2600-2700. Which is a lot of money. But if they last another 15 years isn't much per year really.

So wibu to go and buy them? If I order this week I can get them by Christmas. Hoping I can also get the 4 years interest free credit too.

Check out freecycle. You'll get a sofa set for the price of hiring a van.

runningtogetskinny · 07/11/2017 21:41

Have you tried Barker and Stonehouse? I bought a large 4 seater and two chairs in the sale for about £3500 5 years ago, it felt like a lot of money but they’re still like new! Most of our furniture is from there and I find the quality very good

mrsreynolds · 07/11/2017 21:43

If you are spending that much then don't buy from DFS!!

speakout · 07/11/2017 21:47

I wouldn't go into debt for a sofa- no.
I buy good quality second hand furniture.
I bought two huge John Lewis sofas in pristine condition from our local furniture recycling store. Total was £140 including delivery.

Welshmaenad · 07/11/2017 21:53

Have a look at these guys. They deliver nationwide as far as I know. My sister had a sofa and swivel chair from them and it was fab quality and much cheaper than dfs

I love my cheap and cheerful Ektorp sofas from Ikea
Covers are washable and you can buy extra ones in different colours
£250 each

Darkstar4855 · 07/11/2017 22:02

We bought our sofa and armchair from Furniture Village this time last year and they discounted it and gave us a guarantee that if it was cheaper in the January sales then we’d get the difference back (it wasn't).

We spent £2.5K on a 3 seater sofa and armchair but it’s leather with electric recliner seats. Worth every penny. You sit on your sofa every day pretty much so to my mind it’s worth investing decent money in. Same for beds.

Bluntness100 · 07/11/2017 22:03

We bought from dfs, two of the loch level grand pillow backs And yes by the time you add in scotchguarding it’s expensive. But these sofas are fab, they are huge, but so is the room, and really, really well made, and the service we got was excellent. We looked at many, but these were the ones we wanted.cost was over 3.5 k at the end, which is expensive but in my view worth it.

Don’t scrimp on your sofas, buy ones you love, because you will have them bloody years and spend a lot of your time with your arse on them.

A friend also bought hers from there, leather, and it’s lovely and very well made also. So for me it would be a yes go for it.

I love my DFS sofa, £300 and going strong 4 years later! Definitely wait for the sale though.

If the location works, read up on

Hmm, difficult to know what to do.

If I just needed standard 3seater/ 2 seater type thing it would be easier. Plus I also have quite specific taste.

I've checked out all the links people have suggested and honestly I've not seen anything on there that was the lounger style I need or was any cheaper than DFS.

However I have found a cheaper alternative. Not as nice but Tesco of all places sell something which almost fits the bill. I would have to compromise and not have my swivel chair though (or have it from a different range/ colour, not ideal) but I could accomplish the job for just about £1k....

Something to think about.

Sofa. Com have a shop on EBay you can get some good deals. DFS is overpriced and crap quality.

Maudlinmaud · 07/11/2017 22:19

Op we got ours made, by a local guy. Both where about £1500 each and made to measure. I chose everything from the fabric to the types of arm rests. Both going strong 8 years later, although I'm thinking of upholstering them.

WeAllHaveWings · 07/11/2017 22:20

We paid £2400 for 2 leather sofas 9 years ago, but they are beginning to look a bit worse for wear, hopefully get another 3 years out of them. I don’t like credit so I will need to start saving a bit monthly now to replace!

£2800 for 3 sofas and a footstool isn’t really a lot (depending on your finances), make sure you are paying for quality not just design if you are expecting it to last 15 years.

Sonearandyetsofa · 07/11/2017 22:25

So this is the kind of thing I am looking at -(plus additional sofas, footsrool etc) the Tesco one is much more basic than the DFS of course but it's less than half the price in total...

Could you get your existing sofas reupholstered?

Tour · 07/11/2017 22:27

Have a look at John Lewis.

dotdotdotmustdash · 07/11/2017 22:30

I bought a beautiful leather suite from Gumtree recently for £275. When I went to view it I would have walked away if it had shown any signs of wear or scruffiness but it was in perfect condition and sitting in a beautiful, clean home and we snapped it up.

There are plenty of people who keep their couches in beautiful condition and change them regularly. I would hate pay £3k for something I could get for less than £500.

Sonearandyetsofa · 07/11/2017 22:33

The existing sofas don't really work in the room, they were never bought for this house. The 2 older ones are coloured leather and very worn. I don't think they could be upholstered, nor would I want to. I'm going to keep the slightly less knackered one though to go in the shed (I was going to call it a summerhouse but that's a bit grand! Its basically a shed/den for the teenagers).

CakeNinja · 07/11/2017 22:36

We spent more than double what you did on a 4 seater, 2 seated and a double sofa bed, 8 years ago. The first two we dumped a couple of months ago, the sofa bed is going this weekend and we are going furniture shopping on Saturday. They were destroyed beyond belief.
So I don’t think 3K is too much for something that may last 15 years!!

TemptressofWaikiki · 07/11/2017 23:55

For that money, I'd buy decent sofas or cool designs. DFS stuff is naff and crappily made. Actually, you'll find their stuff is made by similar companies in Eastern Europe than IKEA stuff which is a fraction of the price.

QueenArseClangers · 08/11/2017 00:03

Ikea have very similar to what you've linked.
We've been today to get a new sofa and nearly all of them have a 10 year guarantee.

ShotsFired · 08/11/2017 07:41

Would this be any use? I haven't delved in detail but it has the chaise you mentioned: www.sofology.co.uk/sofas/EDGWARE?category=Fabric&code=SKU000144117&_s=cs

ShotsFired · 08/11/2017 07:43

Or maybe this one, as scatter back will just go to shit very quickly: www.sofology.co.uk/sofas/ROSIE?category=Fabric&code=SKU000152920&_s=cs

HRTpatch · 08/11/2017 07:45

If you can afford it what's the problem? We spent £3500 on 4 sofas ( all motorised recliners) and expect them to last ten years.
