All palm oil tastes like shit, regardless of whether it’s certified or not.

Some people can’t eat it because it causes nausea.

It is a cheap, nasty ingredient which has no place in a premium chocolate brand however it is used.

Do you work for the friggin’ Palm Oil Promotion Front or something?

Incitatus · 09/11/2017 17:57

Oh, yes and the HC that we bought did taste like oily crap.

I don't think HC chocolate contains palm oil. However fillings/biscuits may do.

No palm oil here for example

or here

It's different from the chocolate itself being made from palm oil.

It's obviously not 'the very best', but then the very best is more expensive.

raviolidreaming · 09/11/2017 19:39

Morrisons do an amazing crunchy chocolate and hazelnut spread. Nicer than Nutella and no palm oil.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 09/11/2017 20:07

Which one, Ravioli?

I've looked it up online and I can't find one without palm oil.

pisacake · 09/11/2017 20:08

yeah pretty much all chocolate spread thats not super-pricey will contain palm oil.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 09/11/2017 20:12

Yes, Piscake and 01, the chocolate itself doesn't have it, but I'm buying and eating the whole thing, I can't separate the chocolate shell from the filling of the pralines, or other chocolates, so for me the box of chocs, as a product, has palm oil.

I understand it's not a lot, but it bothers me, certified or not.

This is one of the reasons I cook and bake from scratch. I want to avoid palm oil as much as possible.

raviolidreaming · 09/11/2017 20:37

ChardonnaysPrettySister Sad I've not bought it in a while. I must be thinking of something else. Sorry. I'll come back if my brain works!

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 09/11/2017 20:38

It would be lovely if they did have one, Ravioli.
Do post if remember what it was.

pisacake · 09/11/2017 20:42

yeah but the pralines don't contain palm oil either. Some of the biscuit-type chocolates do. You just need to read the ingredients and maybe not buy a mixed box.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 09/11/2017 20:52

I used pralines as a synonym for chocolates because I had too many chocolates in a sentence. Grin

But TBH is easier just not buying anything at all if I have to check the ingredients for every single variety in the box.

Wouldn't it be easier if they didn't use any palm oil at all?

pisacake · 09/11/2017 20:56

yes it seems like an obvious thing to just not use the biscuit supplier that contains palm oil tbh

maggienolia · 11/11/2017 13:44

I've just discovered chocolate filled with Advocaat.

Just for your info, I worked for HC, they are an extremely ethical company, only a very small amount of palm oil is used - as previous posters say -in biscuits etc. Their CEO is very active in ensuring the ethical provenance of all the ingredients. It is a good British company with high quality standards so why any posters are so keen to put it down and say it’s just like Cadbury’s I don’t know! Their Nutella style spread is pretty good I have to say (although rather pricey), and kids not overly keen on it (not enough sugar or oily enough !)
