How long before we get a government that decides selling explosives to the general public is a bad idea?

That’s it really. Pissed off with the 3 weeks of fireworks that have been going on around me. Ask 100 people who bought fireworks what they were celebrating, you would be lucky to get one who had the correct answer

I like fireworks on New Years Eve when they all go off at once they look fantastic.

What annoys me about bonfire night is that they go off a week or even two before the actual night. It's especially annoying as it falls on a weekend night this year but we've had a weeks or more of fireworks every night at weekend.

teaandtoast · 05/11/2017 21:27

Arf at a 'few crappy ones in the garden'. Ours were brilliant. Wink

wasonthelist · 05/11/2017 21:27

My neighbours and I just had a fab fireworks display. I’d be really sad if they were banned because some people are numpties.

Agree completely with @insancerre

Fireworks should only be permitted at licensed displays.

They’re dangerous. They’re noisy and frankly they’re also completely shit. I don’t get the point of them at all.

UserX · 05/11/2017 21:36

I will never get over the dichotomy in this country: explosives in your tiny back garden? Sure! Fill your boots! No need to worry about setting your neighbours on fire! Give all the 2 year olds sparklers! Yay! Shut up you joyless scaremongerers!

God forbid you should want to dry your hair in the bathroom though, far too dangerous.

Doobigetta · 05/11/2017 21:39

I absolutely love fireworks, they are beautiful.

I'd also happily support a total ban on selling them to the public. One animal suffering so that we can enjoy pretty lights is one too many, and frankly, anyone who doesn't agree with that is an utterly selfish fucking cunt.

MulderitsmeX · 05/11/2017 21:47

I'm fairly ambivalent but will never let off any myself as it scares me too much! Maybe the fountain thing but I'm too much of a worrier to use rockets.

DamsonGin · 05/11/2017 21:48

If there could be some sort of licence with an arsehole test on it that would be great.

We had our crappy little fireworks that went pop tonight, and a bonfire, and did shit loads of history around it all. Last night, however, it sounded like the street was going to be mortared, and last year a bus got attacked so I'd be happy for that to be seriously limited.

Oh goody, the voice of reason

Seniorcitizen1 · 05/11/2017 21:51

They would lose my vote. Pisses me off that every year we get moaning twats coming on about fireworks. Fuck off - its an English tradition of hundreds of years - if you dont like it put ear plugs in snd hid inder a blanket. Ffs

wasonthelist · 05/11/2017 21:52

I will never get over the dichotomy in this country:
There are plenty of other examples. Other people’s pets and stereos spoil my fun most weeks -but my one night of fireworks a year need banning.

SciFiFan2015 · 05/11/2017 21:56

I love fireworks. I love the sound, I love the smell, I love the sight of them.
I’d happily have them banned as long as organised, official displays were still possible.
Went to a fantastic 25 minute official display tonight. Amazing fun. It’s well organised and well advertised so families can plan for pet care and the like.

RB68 · 05/11/2017 21:57

Sparklers no problem, fireworks organised displays - so the explosives don't get int he hands of idiots - we ban plenty of other stuff because of the idiotic few why not explosives, we have gun control but no control over something that could be altered to make a bomb - really in this day and age I am sorry but we need to grow up and understand sometimes these things have to be only done by professionals under controlled circumstances.

UserX · 05/11/2017 22:01

Other people’s pets and stereos spoil my fun most weeks

That is because the police are seriously underfunded and don’t have time to deal with quality of life complaints. It is not comparable to letting off explosives in built up areas.

wasonthelist · 05/11/2017 22:02

control over something that could be altered to make a bomb
I can make a much better and more effective bomb with a can of petrol - how about banning that?

wasonthelist · 05/11/2017 22:04

No it isn’t. The Police aren’t interested in noise, never have been. And people’s legal pets spoil my fun. I want to let a few fireworks off in my garden once a year

Notcontent · 05/11/2017 22:05

For me the issue is that not only are they not that safe, but they are also incredibly noisy. My dd has to get up very early for school and had a lot of trouble getting to sleep tonight. It's a bit hard to sleep when something keeps exploding only a few metres away... And I know it's going to be like this all this week.

WhatwouldAryado · 05/11/2017 22:06

Meh. They're a crappy status symbol. "Look at us burning a weeks grocery budget kids oooooo"

Ontheboardwalk · 05/11/2017 22:09

Been quiet round here for about an hour - great!

That's until one knob head house over the way has just decided to do a massive firework display in their back garden annoying and disturbing hundreds of houses

Fuck wits

wasonthelist · 05/11/2017 22:10

Good grief - I thought the Puritans were all dead.

Changerofname987654321 · 05/11/2017 22:13

I would prefer fireworks to only for organised displays.

I hate children having sparklers. They burn at over 2000c. If someone is not old enough to make a cup of tea they should not be allowed something which is 20 times hotter.

Completely agree. Selling explosives at the supermarket just makes no sense to me. Organised displays only in many countries but no government will take it on - it's not a vote winner - too many people wanting to assert their rights to blow shit up.

AlternativeTentacle · 05/11/2017 22:21

have as many fireworks as you like, we just cant sell you more than one packet of sudafed in case you make crack with it.

yes, very sensible.

vvviola · 05/11/2017 22:23

They are illegal here in Ireland. Makes not a blind bit of difference.

Fireworks going off constantly for about a week before Halloween.

Growing up the local policeman used to have a massive fireworks display every Halloween... from all the fireworks he had confiscated. Grin
