So my 1 year old DS is so ill with a chest infection (as am I) and has just thrown his dinner and bottle up all over his bedroom floor and direct NDN are having their own mini fireworks display in their tiny back garden. DS’s bedroom is at the back of the house closest to their side and he obviously isn’t going to sleep for shit and is just screaming his little head off Angry

I know it’s not extremely late and they could go on until 11 if they really wanted to but they have kids of their own I would have expected to be in bed too by now and DP is 1 more firework away from going round there and shoving them where the sun don’t shine. I really don’t want to start neighbour wars as it’s all I bloody hear about at work, so if it comes to it I will have to go round and politely ask if they could stop now - they do seem like nice people so I’m sure they would.

My DM and DF also live up the road have 6 cats who are all scared stiff and have gone into hiding bless them!

But AIBU to think fireworks at home are so bloody inconsiderate??

FYI - I’m not prepared to be told IABU 😂

The thing is though, there are a million different ways to piss off neighbours. Those of you who choose to have cats, that's great, but they shit in my flowerbeds and distubborn my plants. One also howls outside at night keeping me awake. Another neighbour's dog frightens my children just by existing.

In both cases I just kind of chalk it up to "that's life". There are drugs you can give house pets to zone them out. It's not ideal every night but a few times a year it is reasonable I think if the pets are ok to take.

Totally different story if you live rurally with horses and other livestock nearby.

Op I do sympathise as it is horrid to have a sick child and be sick yourself but it is just bad luck that this happened in firework season.

For children who cannot bear them, would they tolerate ear defenders or noise canceling headphones?

I also wish they'd ban sales to the public. They are a public nuisance and dangerous.

I remember working in A&E as a junior, there was so many avoidable injuries caused by fireworks and sparklers. Some really serious and life altering. Apart from the impact on the individuals involved, it's a serious waste of resources.

There are displays in most places, even if you have to travel a bit (we live rurally, so have to drive to nearest small town/large village to go to the one organised by the community council- with fireworks and bonfire managed by suitably qualified and experienced people).

The fear caused to pets and livestock can be significant. Friends of mine had tenants who set off fireworks in the garden, backing onto fields with sheep in one and their horses in another. They didn't let anyone know they were planning this. The panic that ensued cost a lot of money to fix and one horse was seriously injured (large vets bill). A little common sense would have prevented that.

Shiela2017 · 05/11/2017 18:25

People who set off fireworks are selfish tossers. It will be like this now every night until new year. I like a proper organised event on bonfire night and new year but any other time is just pure selfishness.

Ragusa · 05/11/2017 18:34

But Shiela2017 so is having a dog that yaps/ cat that shits everywhere in the neighbourhood. They aren't all reliable tray pooers and I can testify to this because we had a pest of a cat when I was growing up.

Polarised views tend to emerge oN this but let us not forget that many choices we make impinge on others! That is just life.

Bucketsandspoons · 05/11/2017 19:36

Again, when cats explode overhead with loud bangs and their shit sets fire to things I'll be very glad to help you campaign for organised cat displays.

Ragusa I've purposely let DS watch a bit too much DanTDM youtube this weekend with my headphones in (he can't do the chunkier ones he finds them too heavy) to help him zone out the noise.

Thing is though. When you have a stray one at 4 o cocking clock in the morning that makes all of you jump out of your skin when you've not long got all of you settled it's still a bit irksome to say the least.

JonSnowsWife · 05/11/2017 19:43

There is yes but they don't always work. Dog walking lady friend has been using tablets, the spray and the plugin for the weeks running up to this. One of her dogs is still visibly shaking each night.

LazyDailyMailJournos · 05/11/2017 19:50

YANBU.

I love a really good fireworks display, but I hate home fireworks. Many people have zero idea of safety - and round these parts they are pretty constant every night from now until NYE. I've lost count of the number of near misses, from idiots setting them off and not 'grounding' them properly, to setting them off in completely inappropriate places.

They should be banned for private sale and only allowed for licensed displays by trained and insured operators.

Nancy91 · 05/11/2017 19:55

I find it really horrible that it scares animals, but I think it's a bit of fun for people and it is only around this time of year. I wouldn't like to spoil people's fun.

Junebugjr · 05/11/2017 20:02

I love fireworks, and my animals aren't bothered by them.
BUT the potential for it to go all wrong while using them is too high.
People don't place them right, get too close up, put them too near buildings, get pissed when using them etc etc.
It's just been on the local FB page that there's a house fire in one of the village houses, street cordoned off, fire engines everywhere. Some arsehole decided to have a bonfire and fireworks too close to his house. Just hope no one was hurt.
