Is it acceptable to use the penny jar at self service?

Really trying to save money at the moment, we're not doing great financially.
I'm off to Morrisons and told DP I was taking the penny jar and will use it at self service. He says I can't do that, it's too embarrassing and takes too long.
I think I can! After all, what are you supposed to use all your coppers for? The penny machines take a percentage and there isn't that many coin in there....
Aibu?

I've done a few pound at a time. You can usually lift the flap of the coin slot up and put it in, in handfuls much quicker.

WomanEmpire · 04/11/2017 18:12

After all of that, I forget them at home!
I was planning to do what I could with the pennies, then put the rest on the card.
Going to check out my local branch of Barclays, see if I can deposit my coins in there.
I'm surprised by those who don't have any penny jars? Every time I get small change (anything less than a 50p - sometimes I'm feeling generous and the 50ps go in there too) where do you put yours?!

FLOOFD! Your car has s dookit? I don't hear that word much these days... Doonhamer? Grin

lettuceWrap · 04/11/2017 18:27

*has a dookit

CurlyhairedAssassin · 04/11/2017 18:29

Oh god, I did this once after reading on here that I should. It was a terrible idea! The machine seemed to take ages to “read” each coin, there was a big queue and it all took so long it was very embarrassing. So embarrassing that it went beyond that and I started laughing hysterically. The assistants were laughing to and probably thought I was a silly moo.

I would do it again but At a very quiet time and not when it was nearly £15 worth of coopers I was putting in!!!

potatoscowls · 04/11/2017 18:40

Go to a metro bank, they have a converter machine even for non customers

WomanEmpire · 04/11/2017 19:07

Apparently our nearest metro bank is 200 km away!
I'm not in Kansas London anymore

Erm..... I spend them. I have a section in my purse (as I thought everyone did) that is for coins. I then use those coins to buy things..... especially helpful if something is £5.30 - you give the cashier your £10 note and the 30p. Sometimes if something costs £1, then I'd pay for it with 5x20p.

I do save pennies, but that is for charity, and then I bag them up (£1) i a bag and swap them in the bank.

As to if YABU or not, I guess it depends on the size of the jar.

BelafonteRavenclaw · 04/11/2017 19:31

I see nothing wrong with this and would do it. Money is money. Recently DS1 paid for something in loose change and the assistant was rather huffy with him. He’s only 5 and only had £1.20 in change (silver and coppers). He was so excited to be buying something with his ‘own’ money.

MaisyPops · 04/11/2017 19:36

I've thrown a load of silvers and coppers in to self service. I do it a lot when it's quiet and I'm bored of carrying it.

I wouldn't bring a penny jar in though

Rebeccaslicker · 04/11/2017 19:37

Coinstar is your friend!

Apparently the legal limit at which a shop can refuse payment in pennies is 11p - i learned that at school. Must check if it's still true!

Rebeccaslicker · 04/11/2017 19:38

Internet says 20p!

hellokittymania · 04/11/2017 19:44

I'm not able to use self service by myself since I'm visually impaired, but I give my coins all the time. Or I would exchange them at coffee shops where I knew the people and they would take my coins and give me bills. So I would say go ahead.

Same as BackforGood In the coin pocket in my purse.

10s and 20s I just spend them and they're especially useful if you have to pay for parking, and it's something like £3.20.

Smaller 1s, 2s, 5s, I just leave them in my purse and if I buy something that is £3.56 and pay with a fiver, I will also give them the 6p so I get £1.50 back, not £1.44. Stops it building up in my purse, but if I do, I just put it in the do it yourself till at the supermarket and pay the rest on card. No need for a coin jar at all.

I used to have a coin jar, but realised it was really faffy counting and bagging all the money and then needed a special trip to the bank , which I almost never need to do. I deal with about one check every 2 years now.

Floralnomad · 05/11/2017 11:11

It’s no faff having a coin jar or in our case small bucket , once a year I nip to the bank with it and stick it in the coin counter machine , usually have £75+ in there .

Floofd · 08/11/2017 12:00

lettuce Grin

Not a Doonhamer- a little further North but not far away!

Dookit is a great word!

lettuceWrap · 08/11/2017 17:46

It is indeed a very fine word!

jay55 · 08/11/2017 17:49

I do it. I’ll put in the pennies from my purse even if paying the rest by card.

Izzabellasasperella · 08/11/2017 18:33

I have a penny jar, I just empty all the small change out of my purse a few times a week. When it's full dd and I count it all out bag it up (I think you need the proper change bags from your bank) They will weigh it and put the amount into your account.
