Is it acceptable to use the penny jar at self service?

Really trying to save money at the moment, we're not doing great financially.
I'm off to Morrisons and told DP I was taking the penny jar and will use it at self service. He says I can't do that, it's too embarrassing and takes too long.
I think I can! After all, what are you supposed to use all your coppers for? The penny machines take a percentage and there isn't that many coin in there....
Aibu?

If its a lot of small change I use the coin star machine.

NotSuchASmugMarriedNow1 · 04/11/2017 16:03

With coinstar they only take commission if you want cash. If you have a voucher to spend in store you get all of it.

Also, I assume your DP isn't going to eat any of the food that you buy OP, because he's embarressed isn't he? Or he is quite happy to eat the food as long as it's you who embarrases yourself?

MongerTruffle · 04/11/2017 16:05

Apparently the legal tender amount in copper is only 20p
That's true. Shops will usually take the money anyway, but they're not required to. www.royalmint.com/aboutus/policies-and-guidelines/legal-tender-guidelines

It's not much the charge
If you paid £100 in you would only get £90.10 out.

BG2015 · 04/11/2017 16:06

I do this all the time. I have a little purse I top up with (not a jar) and use that.

I only do it when it’s quiet. Paid with about £4 worth of coppers once - who cares!

fashunn · 04/11/2017 16:08

I would just take the pennies to a bank tbh

How much are you intending to spend? I work in retail, I’m sure pennies are only considered legal tender up to £x amount so I doubt you’ll be able to do £100 worth of shopping? But correct me if I’m wrong

Also sounds like it’s going to be a pain for the staff involved as the machine inevitably begins to reject coins.

If you are planning on being such a nause, at least talk to a manager first so he can advise you on the easiest way to carry out the transaction and will be aware of what you’re doing in case of any potential problems

When I ran a toddler group I used to take bags of change to the post office to be changed into notes. Don't they do that any more?

southboundagain · 04/11/2017 16:26

"When I ran a toddler group I used to take bags of change to the post office to be changed into notes. Don't they do that any more?"

They still do that - you have to count out the coins to the right quantity, or if you have accurate scales at home you can probably do it by weight to save time. I have heard some banks don't require you to sort first but mine does.

CakesRUs · 04/11/2017 16:28

Yanbu. It’s fine to use it.

KissesAX · 04/11/2017 16:31

I do all the time because I have to and coppers are usually the only money I have.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 04/11/2017 16:32

Of course it's not embarrassing. That's what its there for.

You dh sounds do I dare say, a bit snobbyll

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 04/11/2017 16:33

Ignore those 2 lls. Don't know where they came from

pinkliquorice · 04/11/2017 16:38

Tbh I would be annoyed if i had to wait for someone emptying a whole jar of pennys 1 at a time to pay for their food shop.
You can take pounds worth of 1p or 2p into most banks and get them exchanged (but I think there a rule about it needing to be for children?)
I would empty a few odd ones I have in my purse but it does seem rude to stand there with a whole jar when there are people waiting behind me.
How big is your penny jar, surely you dont have enough to pay for a whole food shop?

Hazelatte26 · 04/11/2017 16:39

My partner would die of embarrassment but I'd do it.

mirpuppet · 04/11/2017 16:40

My child loves it when we do this and wanted to do their piggy bank next.

The self service has many stations and we don't do it at busiest times.

Not embarrassing -- it is money.

allegretto · 04/11/2017 16:43

I don't really get why anybody has a penny jar anyway but glad to be enlightened!

PeiPeiPing · 04/11/2017 16:46

@WomanEmpire

I would get it changed at the bank. Shops are entitled to refuse 100s of coppers, and they will too.

Hope your financial situation improves soon.

Sending you waves of luck..............

Easilyflattered · 04/11/2017 16:51

I tend to chuck in a generous handful and then put the balance on card!

didnthappeninmyday · 04/11/2017 17:05

I take a purse full of coppers when buying milk and bread from the corner shop, small shops love being paid in coppers as they never have enough.

userofthiswebsite · 04/11/2017 17:09

Where does everyone accumulate all these 1ps and 2ps from? Don't you just use them up in your everyday transactions? Sometimes I might end up with a handful in my wallet but I'm talking 20ps worth maybe.

ChelleDawg2020 · 04/11/2017 17:12

Do it. It's money. The dickheads that annoy me are the ones who do it at the manned checkout.

ButterfliesandMoths · 04/11/2017 17:13

It’s a great way to off load all your change

SparklyUnicornPoo · 04/11/2017 17:26

Metro bank have a machine that counts it for you and will either put it in your account for you if you have an account with them, or give you cash even if they aren't your bank (there's also a prize if you guess how much you have which my DD loves doing)

Nothing wrong with putting it in the self service machines if you have the patience to do it 1 by 1 though.

berwickswan · 04/11/2017 17:27

Isn't shrapnel heavy! I put all my 1d and 2d coins in change bags I get from my bank. When I've got about £5.00 bagged up in my desk I drop them into our bank. They weigh a ton!

iamyourequal · 04/11/2017 17:34

Get coin bags from your own bank and just get into the habit of taking full copper bags in to deposit if you are ever in paying in cheques etc.

millifiori · 04/11/2017 17:37

does Metro bank still have a dispenser - it changes coppers into real money with not charge. Don't some of the voucher machines charge?
