As per title,
I am reading a book (2nd in a trilogy) that my DH started reading first. He reads it in bed at night and I read it at other times. He thinks this is outrageous and totally socially unacceptable! I don't see the problem.
IABU?!

Does he think that you will wear the words out?!

Wouldn bother me at all, especially if as a PP said, he is a slow "three pages a night" reader.

The only thing that would annoy me is if you were reading when I wanted to, as the first reader he should get dibs if you both want to read it at the same time. If that is never an issue then he needs to stop he strop!

Reflexella · 02/11/2017 23:44

I don’t know why but it feels wrong, I’d get miffed at that but I don’t know why. Grin
You are reading it at a different time but you will be moving the book, possibly competing to read it, losing his place. It’s totally twisting my melon

PyongyangKipperbang · 02/11/2017 23:44

Do you have a Kindle?

Rather than get another hard copy, why not download it o a shared kindle? Actually, you dont even need a kindle, just down load the app to your phone. I have hard copies on my shelves and digital copies on.....my phone, 2 kindles, 1 tablet and my laptop :o

puddleduckmummy · 02/11/2017 23:46

YANU for reading the same book. YABVU for folding pages!

Flyinggeese · 02/11/2017 23:46

Ooh this makes me feel funny! I feel it is completely unacceptable. I'd really dislike it, but there is no logic to that feeling at all. Odd.

FeedMeAndTellMeImPretty · 02/11/2017 23:47

DP and I will 'read' the same book, but he has it on audio in the car, so listens to half an hour every so often, at dramatic spoken pace, whereas I will read two or three hour chunks (and I'm a fast reader!) so he gets annoyed that I overtake him. I don't give spoilers, but I think its a pride thing that he's reading with his ears and I am being all intellectual and reading with my eyes Grin

I wouldn't have an issue sharing a paper book as long we both used bookmarks. Folding pages would annoy me as there would be two pages folded at any one time (not to mention the heresy of folding pages full stop!!) With bookmarks it would be obvious which of the two was mine and therefore I wouldn't feel it was such an intrusion!

Strange how many people are offended by this idea isn't it?!

TalkinBoutWhat · 02/11/2017 23:48

Ugh, a slow reader hogging the book. HE IBU!!!!

Borrow away, and put it back every evening.

paxillin · 02/11/2017 23:48

Since it doesn't get used up I'd continue.

MysteriousSheep · 02/11/2017 23:48

No kindle, like having a paper book. Does seem ridiculous having two hard copies. Suppose I could just secretly and considerately read it when I'm at home and he's not (won't take me long). Except he'd notice the folded corners. Argh! And no, I can't wait. I like instant gratification.

FeedMeAndTellMeImPretty · 02/11/2017 23:53

Stick a receipt or something small and thin in as a bookmark, he won't notice it and as he won't catch up with you before you're done he'll never know!

PyongyangKipperbang · 02/11/2017 23:55

Just text yourself the page number when you finish.

DiegoMadonna · 03/11/2017 00:10

There is no good reason to get annoyed about this, OP. Of course, most mumsnetters are so tightly wound that they'd be pissed off about winning the lottery, so you may be getting some skewed answers here.

DancingHouse · 03/11/2017 00:16

I'm with you OP, I see no issue with it. It's no different to you both watching a film at the same time really.

DancingHouse · 03/11/2017 00:17

No talking whilst 'its on' but chat away when you're finished.

No probs

JustTrying15 · 03/11/2017 02:55

Just me that wants to know what the book is then.....lol

steff13 · 03/11/2017 03:00

You dog ear the pages of a book?! You're both monsters!

But, yeah, it would bug me if you were trying to read the same copy of a book that I was reading, at the same time. I can't pinpoint why, but I wouldn't like it.

missperegrinespeculiar · 03/11/2017 03:07

yes, YABVU for folding corners, it is totally monstrous! but I would actually be very happy if my DH (or kids!) read the same book as me, I love talking about books!

In fact I am often frustrated I can't do this (I read muuuccchh more than anybody else in the family and very quickly) and have been known to try and explain the plot of a book so I can discuss some point with them, they are very patient with me.

Well actually, I think the kids have acquired a love of stories because of this otherwise annoying habit, so I guess that's good!

so HIBU!

PyongyangKipperbang · 03/11/2017 03:21

Me too Just!

miss

I hate that H doesnt read anything much, the kids do but our tastes dont overlap apart from HP so needless to say we discuss that a lot. We agree that Harry is a whining self pitying git, Molly and Arthur need to sort out their appalling financial attitude and Minerva and NEville are the best characters! :o

Is nice o hear he wo middle girls (12 and 15) discussing books as hey are boh ino similar hings :)

PyongyangKipperbang · 03/11/2017 03:24

*Its nice to hear the two middle girls (12 and 15) discussing books as they are both into similar things

Broken T key on my laptop, have to put them in via onscreen keyboard, v frustrating as a touch typis!

SabineUndine · 03/11/2017 03:29

It’s territorial isn’t it. My book, my gaff.

sashh · 03/11/2017 03:33

I would be slightly irritated with an actual book, and very annoyed at the corner turning, however I wouldn't if it was my kindle.

velouria · 03/11/2017 05:01

Gabby, what difference does it make. People precious about dog ears do my fucking nut in too. It's not the only copy in existence and you will likely never look at it again. I have read slightly foisty/mouldy books before now know what? The words remained.

velouria · 03/11/2017 05:04

Yanbu rather than Gabby ffs

FoxInABox · 11/11/2017 22:14

I would hate this so I’m sorry but YABU! I don’t know why but it would feel almost intrusive to me, and I wouldn’t be too happy. Either wait or buy another copy/e-book version.

UrsulaPandress · 11/11/2017 22:16

This thread has made me feel quite faint.
