To put the washing machine upstairs?

fizzicles · 01/11/2017 20:43

Just moved house and there’s no space for a dishwasher in the kitchen. We could put one where the washing machine currently is and move the washing machine to the upstairs bathroom or just outside it. Is this a terrible idea?

I’m currently saving to do this. I’m disabled and really struggle with stairs so dragging washing up and down is the absolute bane of my life and often gets left to ds to do. I have a spare box room which I use for sewing/ironing etc so would be the perfect place to double up as a laundry room.

Bluntness100 · 01/11/2017 22:41

In the bathroom is fine, but I would build a cupboard to house it. I also wouldn’t have it just outside thr bathroom If that means randomly sitting on the landing,

I did have mine in the bathroom and moved it, but if it was between that and no dishwasher I’d have it in the bathroom and have a dishwasher.

blackteasplease · 01/11/2017 22:46

Sounds v sensible to me!

LittleBirdBlues · 01/11/2017 22:49

It's more than fine, it's the perfect place for it!

I'm from germany. Washing machines belong in a bathroom, why on earth they are put in kitchens in the UK is beyond me!

You all are making me curious now. Any chance for pics for those with upstairs washing machine? Did the floor joists needed extra strengthening or anything special done? @BeALert, that sounds like heaven to me. You don't by any chance took a photo or if it's been listed on Rightmove for me to swoon.

Notcontent · 01/11/2017 22:50

Yes, absolutely. Mine is upstairs. I had no space in the kitchen but would not want it there anyway. I have a very small boxroom at the top of the house and that's where it lives.

Notcontent · 01/11/2017 22:53

Nameusername - I don't but I don't tend to use the very high spin functions in my machine anyway, as I don't like getting clothes too crumpled (as I hate ironing!).

Whisky2014 · 01/11/2017 22:54

I have an upstairs utility....it's great!

A1Sharon · 01/11/2017 22:54

We changed our nursery to a laundry room last year.
It has a washing machine, a tumble dryer, ironing board, laundry baskets, a clothes horse, shelves, racks...it's fab! Would definitely recommend it, its a great use of a small room.
Have a look at IKEA website.

WishfulThanking · 01/11/2017 22:55

Washing machines are extremely heavy. You guys must have struggled to get them upstairs

VickyRsuperstar · 01/11/2017 23:11

I have a second washing machine in the big bathroom upstairs as I have so much laundry. We always used the shower in the small bathroom and never used the bath so it's plumbed in by a self cutting tap into the sink cold tap pipe and drains out into the bath and down the plug hole. I have a 6 line thing over the bath so dry a lot of stuff on it, but some stuff goes down to the tumble drier downstairs, but it's no problem taking items down to dry.

LoniceraJaponica · 01/11/2017 23:22

So, does no-one line dry?

malmi · 01/11/2017 23:22

You need to be very careful if you want to install a washing machine legally and safely in a bathroom in the UK. The building regs are very strict about how far the unit must be from the bath & sink. Also you're not allowed to have a socket installed unless it's 3 metres from the bath.

SadTrombone · 01/11/2017 23:23

Our condenser drier is in the spare bedroom - no room in the kitchen but can't live without it!

Davros · 01/11/2017 23:46

Ours is upstairs in a small odd room our neighbours use as an office. There’s also the tumble drier, ironing board, heated airer and a sink. It’s great. I never use the highest spin setting and there’s no problems with noise. The only thing is not being convenient to hang washing outside to dry but it’s worth the sacrifice!

kuniloofdooksa · 01/11/2017 23:54

You need to check out the construction on your upstairs floor. Some floors won't be suitable for a washing machine. You need to ensure that your washing machine is on a platform that is firmly bolted to the rafters (not just loosely placed or suspended with insulation between). There's a lot of energy in a washing machine spin cycle and you can actually damage the house if you aren't careful.

Ifearthecold · 01/11/2017 23:58

Our new house in the us has the plumbing for one in the upstairs air conditioning cupboard, as there was a washing machine in the basement I didn't think we needed two but I think it is pretty normal here.

KC225 · 02/11/2017 03:30

We have a corridor off the main hallway up stairs with a 'nook' opposite our main bathroom for our washing machine and tumble dryer. Above it is a pulley maid and a shelf to keep washing powder etc. I love having the washer upstairs. Makes sense to me, clothes come off from the bathroom opposite. I rarely iron these days, so the clothes are hung up straight away when dry. I do carry down a wet load in the summer to hang out but it's worth it. Do it.

Charolais · 02/11/2017 04:07

I have a laundry room upstairs and I love it there. Most of your dirty clothes, linens, towels etc are generated upstairs next to the bedrooms and so it makes sense to have the washer and dryer there.

I have had the laundry room upstairs since 1998 btw. I will admit I was a little worried at first - until I washed the bedsheets then I knew I’d made the right decision.

toomuchtooold · 02/11/2017 05:59

We had ours upstairs in our last place and it was OK, but my worry would be how noisy the spin cycle was going to be. Ours was in a flat in Switzerland where the walls are all 10 inch thick concrete so you can't hear a thing Grin

LoniceraJaponica · 02/11/2017 06:54

Am I the only one who doesn't find it onerous to carry a basket of dirty laundry downstairs?

Even more inconveniently my tumble dryer is in the garage.

flirtygirl · 02/11/2017 07:47

Im planning this when i move, it's the one thing i really like more so than a utility room or a fancy kitchen. Sad that i dream of having the washing machine upstairs.

ForalltheSaints · 02/11/2017 07:49

Sounds strange but I live in a flat and in the small room with the water tank/heater, so no different for you really. The only thing is that if someone is ill in bed, you may have to refrain from using it for a while.

LakieLady · 02/11/2017 08:12

My first house had a massive bathroom and a tiny kitchen, so the washing machine went in the bathroom. It was next to the bath and my then BF built a cupboard for it.

Not only was it very practical, the top of the cupboard made a very handy place to put your book and glass of wine when having long soaks.

bathghter · 02/11/2017 08:23

sounds fine to me. i’ve just moved our dirty clothes basket downstairs to where our bathroom as that’s where all our clothes get taken off so yours can just go straight in the machine!

the only thing i’d check is whether the floor is up to it.
