To stand outside for fireworks when pregnant?

WaitingTillJuly17 · 01/11/2017 17:46

I'm 19 weeks pregnant and we're going to a family member for fireworks this weekend and my DM has just demanded that I stay indoors as the noise will endanger the baby! I basically said don't be stupid and she then started to say she was going to get my DH/DF onside too to convince me to stay inside.

I was then called the worst pregnant woman ever due to my lack of concern for mine and my babies health!

Now, no amount of threatening or cajoling has ever been effective in getting me to do something that I don't want to and at this point I threatened to start lighting the fireworks rather than just be a bystander if she didn't stop her nonsense (I wouldn't actually, as I'm not sure I'd be able to make a quick getaway 😑) but before I start a different type of fireworks at the weekend tell me, is there a reason for me to stay inside on fireworks night?!

Is she thinking of damage to hearing from the noise? There was a study a few years back saying that babies who were exposed to regular loud noises in the womb were more likely to have hearing loss, but that was more like women who worked in v loud factories throughout the pregnancy, they didn't claim occasional loud noises were a risk. Maybe that's what she's thinking of though?

Oh dear. This is going to be a long pg OP.
You need to get your DH to get her to rein in the crazy before the baby actually arrives. Or she will be in there with opinions on feeding and sleeping and teething that'll make your head spin! Shock

CatchingBabies · 01/11/2017 18:27

I'm a midwife. Your mother is insane! Enjoy the fireworks!

Aquamarine1029 · 01/11/2017 18:29

Your mother is off her rocker.

My DS was due late Nov before the Millenium , DH and I went for pizza then to an excellant Firework display (used to be run by the Fire Brigade) , safe, free of charge and well run.
DS jumped every time there was a loud bang so yes they can hear and react.

He'll be 18 next month , still loves fireworks and will tolerate being seen with his parents and sisters for a good fireworks display Grin

PotteringAlong · 01/11/2017 18:42

I've googled! Apparently they can hear some slight noise at 16 weeks but the hearing of a foetus is basically not developed until 24 weeks (according to the internet god). So the baby can't even hear them!

Izzabellasasperella · 01/11/2017 18:44

70isaLimitNotaTarget I have the exact same story but with my.dd! She jumped and wriggled every time a firework went off.

DeadDoorpost · 01/11/2017 18:46

She's crazy. I'm going out on Friday at 37+5 to see them! There's absolutely no harm in this.

2ducks2ducklings · 01/11/2017 18:46

Grin I'm due on bonfire night and have tickets for our school bonfire on the third. It honestly never occurred to me to be concerned about what baby could be hearing! It does concern me having to stand around for a couple of hours though, it does feel like all of my insides are about to drop out at the minute Wink
Would you mother not allow you to take a baby to a firework display?

27yorkshiregirl · 01/11/2017 18:47

Today 17:53 AllTheWittyNamesAreGone

every time a loud one goes of lift your top so baby can hear it better.

Hahahahaha spat my tea out at this one!!!

orangeowls · 01/11/2017 18:48

I stood outside last Nov and watched fireworks whilst 20 weeks pregnant. My baby is completely fine, your mother is crazy!!

NoParticularPattern · 01/11/2017 18:48

I’m thinking I should maybe invest in some bump ear defenders for my 27 week bump come bonfire night. Actually scrap that, I’m sending them to you so you don’t have to listen to all this batshit advice.

My favourite is being told by my MIL “do not put your hands above your head whatever you do!!”. Now this is perfectly acceptable advice RE: stretching/ twisting overhead etc, but when I asked her if she was going to come and brush my hair every day if that were the case I think he got the message. I’m not broken, I’m just fatter than usual!!

WitchesHatRim · 01/11/2017 18:48

I stood outside at a fireworks display at 33 weeks.

Not sure how your DM would have taken that. Grin

NoParticularPattern · 01/11/2017 18:48

She* not he. My MIL is definitely a she!

Floellabumbags · 01/11/2017 18:50

Next you'll be telling us that you go for ultrasound scans (mess with a baby's brainwaves), are planning to use one of those ridiculous car seats (carrycot in the boot is more than adequate) and that you might get your baby vaccinated (bit of whooping cough never harmed anyone) Confused

Naughtysausage · 01/11/2017 18:56

Oh @Fromage properly laughed about the glasses.
Please please do this OP.

ANIDOO · 01/11/2017 18:57

Wait til the baby is here- they get worse 😂

Crumbs1 · 01/11/2017 19:03

I went to fireworks at 41 plus weeks in the vain hope trudging two miles across fields might trigger labour. It didn’t but baby was fine when he eventually arrived.

WaitingTillJuly17 · 01/11/2017 19:11

I'm seriously considering the ear defenders for the bump 😂 Lifting up my top might send her over the edge! I was 16 when she had my brother and I don't remember her being anywhere near this crazy!

When I was 19 weeks pregnant with ds1 I went to a guns and roses concert we were in the mosh pit Axle rose was two hrs late Hmm it probably wasent for the best tbh but ds2 is nearly 11 and fit and healthy im sure you will be fine.

Bluetrews25 · 01/11/2017 20:05

Went to a gig when heavily pregnant and was delighted to feel baby jump when the main act came on - showed baby could hear properly.

Is this the first grandchild? (Heaven help you, OP)

DartmoorDoughnut · 01/11/2017 22:21

@EdmundCleverClogs really?! Did it work? totally asking for a friend, honest

Calaisienne · 01/11/2017 22:28

The baby is inside

EdmundCleverClogs · 01/11/2017 22:31

DartmoorDoughnut, I'm not sure how the thread ended! Though not exactly a cheap way to toilet train....

iknowimcoming · 01/11/2017 22:39

When I was 20 weeks pregnant with my pfb we went to the Spanish Grand Prix (and that was before the cars got noise restricted) you had to wear earplugs the whole time it was so loud and she was 10 days late after induction - have fun Wink
