I changed my DS (2 years old) yesterday and noticed one single blister on his bum. I assumed it was where his nappy was rubbing. 12 hours later and his poor bum was covered in blisters.

I took him to the doctors this morning. Doc took one look and said chicken pox. He has no other spots anywhere on his body and even the nurse said he hadn't seen a case before where it was only on the bum. He took his temperature and it was normal. He sent me away saying not to give nurofen.

I've got home and looked and it again and I'm not so sure it is chicken pox. Has anyone had experience of the pox only being on the bum?

My DD who is 5 has never had chicken pox so no idea what to expect.

HFM. My daughter had HFM and it presented as blisters on her groin. I thought it was nappy rash from hell. Then spotted two blisters on my son’s tongue. My dh then got it on his elbows. It was pretty mild except the bottom blisters on the baby. Loads of sudocreAm to stop any of the blisters getting a secondary infection. Doctor diagnosed HFM

7to25 · 01/11/2017 21:06

Looks very like chicken pox to me.

Ecureuil · 01/11/2017 21:11

My two have literally just had chicken pox and it didn’t look like that. They’ve both had hand, foot and mouth and it started in th groin area with both, and it looked very similar to that.

Starryskiesinthesky · 01/11/2017 22:09

Does it really matter? No treatment for chicken pox or HFM so not sure why you are so set on challenging the CP diagnosis?

toughasnails · 01/11/2017 22:20

I am a nurse.
That looks like chicken pox especially the image on the right.
It can be confined to one area.

Whereareyougoingmouse · 02/11/2017 10:55

Well I've woke this morning and he has no other spots anywhere else, just still the spots on the bottom.

Starry because my mother has never had chicken pox and she's told that if she catches it later on in life then it can be very serious. She looks after him twice a week for me whilst I go to work so if it is chicken pox I need to know because then I will most certainly not let my mum come over and look after him. I know that there is no cure for CP or HFM I'm not daft.

This is what the spots look like this morning, ignore the white it's just where I've put nappy cream on

I think you have to assume its CP. Two GPs have said that. Did you tell them HFM was going round? Dont risk your mums health.

Whereareyougoingmouse · 02/11/2017 11:01

Yes I told him HFM was present at his nursery and he laughed and said you don't get HFM on the bum so we can rule that out

Whereareyougoingmouse · 02/11/2017 11:03

I am going to keep him away from my mum to be on the safe side. I just find it odd how a lot of people who I've asked, including most of you mumsnetters have said it doesn't look like CP and the pharmacist said it's not CP. Either way we are going to be confined to the house now to be safe

Pls ignore if you've already answered this but has there been a change in nappy brand? Could it possibly be a reaction to a new nappy or wipes? Admittedly it doesn't look like an allergic rash but might be something to consider?

Anatidae · 02/11/2017 11:08

Well he’s wrong there. HFM can present anywhere on the body. Ds had a really nasty case of it and it was confirmed as HFM by a specialist paediatric doc (not a GP) who showed us how to tell the difference between the spots with a flashlight. He had only a few spots in his mouth and only a couple of them on hands. They were mainlybin the trunk and limbs and butt.

How can GPs say such things??

Quarantine until the last one has crusted either way. Oatmeal blitzed in a blender, tied into an old pair of tights and runnunder the tap in a bath helps, as does antihistamines and clinpox spray. No ibuprofen for either

Delatron · 02/11/2017 11:24

My nieces both have confirmed hand foot and mouth that started on their bums! Then moved to the mouth. I worry about doctors sometimes!

Whereareyougoingmouse · 02/11/2017 11:26

Regarding quarantine, am I ok to take him on the school run? I have no one else to look after him except my mum but I'm worried about spreading it?

My daughter had HFM mainly on her bum and round her mouth later. It looks more like that to me. Yes fine to take on school run. The spots mine got on her hands and feet were more like tiny pinpricks you could only see if you looked really really carefully

gonepottie · 02/11/2017 11:50

Bum was very sore and covered in blisters and this is the rest of her

Anatidae · 02/11/2017 12:58

I’d leave him with your Mum. HFM is still v infectious and if it is CP it can be very dangerous to expose others.

It sucks - we ended up being really poorly with HFM (I then caught it too...) by quarantine is the responsible thing to do

Hope he’s feeling better. Do keep an eye on any sores in the nappy area and any sign of infection get him seen

ShmooBooMoo · 02/11/2017 13:05

My cousin's little one (2.5 nearly) was diagnosed with Hand, Foot and Mouth last week. Not sure if it started in the nappy area though.

RandomUsernameHere · 02/11/2017 13:11

For the school run, can you take him in the car/buggy and wait with him, and ask another mum to bring your older DC to the car for you?

FemaleDilbert · 02/11/2017 21:06

Buggy with rain cover for school run?
