I changed my DS (2 years old) yesterday and noticed one single blister on his bum. I assumed it was where his nappy was rubbing. 12 hours later and his poor bum was covered in blisters.

I took him to the doctors this morning. Doc took one look and said chicken pox. He has no other spots anywhere on his body and even the nurse said he hadn't seen a case before where it was only on the bum. He took his temperature and it was normal. He sent me away saying not to give nurofen.

I've got home and looked and it again and I'm not so sure it is chicken pox. Has anyone had experience of the pox only being on the bum?

My DD who is 5 has never had chicken pox so no idea what to expect.

Hand foot and mouth has often started in groin for my children.

APocketfulOfStars · 01/11/2017 11:36

Looks just like my son's hand, foot and mouth rash that was mainly concentrated in his nappy area, before spreading to his mouth, and elbow crook, with a little on his hands and feet.

SomethingNewToday · 01/11/2017 11:41

That looks nothing like CP op.

Ds2 was mis-diagnosed with CP when he was 3 by a GP. It turned out to be bites (we think...they came up the day after we'd been to the beach which we didn't consider until we realised the GP was definitely wrong).

Take him back and ask for a different GP.

HeteronormativeHaybales · 01/11/2017 11:44

I'd suspect HFM (based on other posters' experiences, we've been spared it ourselves thus far) or random and possibly one-off reaction to something (has he had a lot of acidic fruits lately, or something new to eat? Are you bf and have had something new lately?). Doesn't look like the pox. But then I'm the one who had a very experienced doctor diagnose dc's chicken pox rash as flea bites (!) - when we went back a few days later with the things everywhere, same doctor announced 'Oh, chicken pox. Classic case' Grin Conclusive proof came when his brother went down with it exactly 14 days later...

Whereareyougoingmouse · 01/11/2017 11:47

I've got another appointment later. I got huffed at and asked why I needed another today and was it urgent but if it's not CP then I would rather know what it is

My DS had a rash similar to that which turned out to be eczema herpeticum. It took days for different doctors to diagnose it...they suggested chicken pox and molluscs first.

ISeeDeadBeryls · 01/11/2017 11:55

Looks like they could be bites?
It certainly seems like an inflammatory reaction to something, he couldn't have sat on something nappyless could he?
Do you have any anti histamine syrup? Give him a dose of that and see if it improves at all in the mean time.

Rikalaily · 01/11/2017 11:58

Dd4's HFM started off looking like that in the nappy area, then she got it on her legs, arms and around her mouth, she got about 2 on her palms and 4 on the soles of her feet, none in her mouth. Then about 4 weeks later her nails started peeling off which is another symptom of it which happens later on when they have recovered.

KeepItAsItIs · 01/11/2017 11:59

Both of mine had CP this year, it looked nothing like that. I wouldn't be happy with that diagnoses either.

Screamer1 · 01/11/2017 12:02

Could it be impetigo? Not sure if you can get it around bum area, but there's been a recent breakout at child's nursery and my daughter had some spots around her bum as well as mouth.

Whereareyougoingmouse · 01/11/2017 12:22

I've got a feeling it's HFM. I've been informed it's going round DS nursery

MollyHuaCha · 01/11/2017 12:39

Doesn’t look like CP to me. (No medical training)

Allshadesofpinkie · 01/11/2017 13:05

My daughter had a similar rash and like you say it came up quickly. I'm sure it was diagnosed as impetigo. Hopefully the doctor can help.

notWORKzilla · 01/11/2017 13:11

That looks like the HFM both of my children had.
And nothing like the chicken pox they've had.

Good luck at your second appointment

DoubleAces · 01/11/2017 13:14

Don’t give Ibuprofen (Nurofen) - give Paracetamol

DoubleAces · 01/11/2017 13:14

Ibuprofen should be avoided in chickebpox

Whereareyougoingmouse · 01/11/2017 17:16

I've just got back from my second appointment with a different doctor. He insisted it was chicken pox 🤔

Any more spots anywhere?

RumDo · 01/11/2017 20:30

Hi OP,

My 4 month old DS had diagnosed CP with blisters only on the nappy area. No question that it was anything else as his two older sisters had it too, in traditional presentation.
The blisters ended up merging into each other and made nappy changing a bit of a nightmare for a while, but I let him kick about without a nappy for as long as possible and eventually they healed.

Hope your LO feels better soon!

Delatron · 01/11/2017 20:32

Looks and sounds like Hand Foot and Mouth, it's doing the rounds at the moment.

I may be wrong but peak chicken pox time is Spring (though I'm sure you can get it all year round).

Starlighter · 01/11/2017 20:38

Another one here saying it doesn’t look like chicken pox! My two children had chicken pox and it looked nothing like that.

But I’m not a doctor and it’s strange the other doctor is saying chicken pox too...

I’d ask a pharmacist for a third opinion. If they also say chicken pox then I guess you have to run with that for the time being. Hope he’s better soon.

Sidge · 01/11/2017 20:51

I’ve seen chicken pox like that. I’m a practice nurse.

Could be HF&M also - hard to tell from a photo but if it’s ONLY on his bottom that is unusual - it tends to start in the mouth.

On the off chance it is chicken pox, please don’t drag him round surgeries and pharmacies spreading it around! Even with HF&M you should stay home to avoid cross infection. Give him liquid paracetamol as needed and antihistamine if he seems itchy.

sillyquestion477 · 01/11/2017 20:59

I'll be shocked if that's not hand foot and mouth. My DD has it atm was diagnosed today. Started Monday exactly like yours nappy area looking exactly like that....i was thinking it was chickenpox myself. Then yesterday rash on arms and legs and around mouth....still wasn't convinced it wasn't going to develop into chicken pox....woke this morning fully covered in a red rash. The rash on her arms and legs is different to the spots on her bum area. I googled this morning and suspected HFM took her to the doctors to get them to look her over and before I mentioned it she took one look at her and said hand foot and mouth straight away and a bad dose of it at that ! I'll try and add some photos but I'm not too sure how to work photos on here !

Nectarines · 01/11/2017 21:00

Another suggestion of HFM here.

My son has it. The spots are worst in nappy area with clusters on hands, feet, face and a bit of a rash on arms and legs. He’s been hot and fed up but not particularly ill.

No spots on torso at all.

We’ve given him piriton on suggestion of pharmacist and that’s helped with the irritation.

sillyquestion477 · 01/11/2017 21:02

This is our hand foot and mouth rashes. Bum looks worse now. Looks so painful :(
