I travelled with a friend to an event. They booked a well known chain for both of us but we paid for our rooms separately on our own cards.

I wasn't happy with my room as it was noisy at night and applied for a refund. The hotel agreed and refunded me £130, but I never got it.

I called them again and they said they have repaid it to the person that booked (my Friend).

This was nearly 8 weeks ago and my friend hasn't mentioned the refund even though we have met up a few times since the refund has been processed.

My friend knows that I complained but I have not mentioned to the friend that I think they have the cash as I was hoping that they would have noticed the £130 refund to their account.

Allowing for credit card statements to arrive etc. I am getting annoyed about this, especially as they know that I have asked for the refund and know that I have had some big emergency bills recently so could do with the cash.

Ask her if it was refunded as you want to chase the hotel.
Split it with her
It was her card she carried the debt.
When you get your credit card out it always costs you more it just does.

RatRolyPoly · 31/10/2017 15:03

"Hi friend, just spoke to the hotel about that refund I've been chasing. They said they've refunded it to your card. Any chance you could check and we could organise a transfer? Much love x"

ConciseandNice · 31/10/2017 15:04

Oh I would totally miss a £130 refund onto my credit card. I imagine she hasn't seen it. I hardly ever check my balance unless it's once a month to pay it. Just ask her. Say that you just found out the hotel put it back on her card and can she just give you the cash?

The hotel needs to refund you. They have made a mistake. Whether they recharge your friend is their affair. I would probably not have noticed either.

DunkMeInTomatoSoup · 31/10/2017 15:08

The hotel would refund to the original booking card. Otherwise anyone could phone up complain and quote a different set of card numbers and be demanding refunds.

Ask your friend if the money has come through

Inertia · 31/10/2017 15:09

The hotel need to pay your refund to your card and then chase your friend themselves. I wouldn't notice a refund on my cc until the next statement arrived.

MiddleClassProblem · 31/10/2017 15:13

Why haven’t you asked her? I probably wouldn’t have noticed either. And my bank/debit card statements come quarterly so if that’s what she used it’s possible she hasn’t seen it.

Still can’t get over you not asking her or mentioning it to her... how odd

ButchyRestingFace · 31/10/2017 15:14

I work freelance. Money comes into my account constantly from every Tom, Dick and Nancy. I wouldn't notice £130 coming in.

Is there some reason you can't ask her directly? Has your tongue and/or texting fingers been temporarily paralysed?

TheViceOfReason · 31/10/2017 15:17

Jesus christ.

Talk about making a problem where one doesn't exist - just say to your friend you'd complained about your room and been given a refund but it's gone back to her as she booked - my account details are xxxxx please transfer it over. Thanks.

DunkMeInTomatoSoup · 31/10/2017 15:20

The hotel need to pay your refund to your card and then chase your friend themselves

No. The contract is between Friend and Hotel. That fact the OP paid Friend and friend collectively paid Hotel on behalf of both persons is completely irrelevant

pasturesgreen · 31/10/2017 15:21

Just ask her outright instead of moaning to a bunch of strangers on the internet?

Talk about creating a problem where there's none Confused

Bluntness100 · 31/10/2017 15:22

I genuinely can’t get my head round the fact you didn’t just say to your friend “can you check you got this refund snd transfer it over please, or let me know If it’s not in”.

I’d have missed it to. Why are you sitting making yourself angry for weeks and using it as a way to cause drama.

BaffledMummy · 31/10/2017 15:22

I never look at my credit card statements...I know i should but I just never do it. Wouldn’t notice £130 refund on a balance which is significantly bigger than that!

Mummyoflittledragon · 31/10/2017 15:23

Soup
The op paid for her own room. The contract is between her and the hotel.

glow1984 · 31/10/2017 15:26

Mummyoflittledragon No, not if it was booked under her friend's name.

Also, it would be far easier for her to just ask her friend rather than go through the rigmarole of contacting the hotel and persuading them to pay her instead. . .

If the friend booked it they tend to take card details then that are stored with the booking. You can pay in a different way when you get there as they did but the stores card is where the refund automatically went to regardless of how they paid on the day. They store the details online with their cancellation policy. This is why it went to the friend.

FinallyHere · 31/10/2017 15:29

There is some confusion here

we paid for our rooms separately on our own cards.

they have repaid it to the person that booked (my Friend)

This I do understand

SilverSpot · 31/10/2017 15:30

I wouldn't notice £130.

Just tell her the cash got refunded to her card and please can she transfer it to you!

Oakmaiden · 31/10/2017 15:31

The hotel would refund to the original booking card. Otherwise anyone could phone up complain and quote a different set of card numbers and be demanding refunds.

Well, they shouldn't. They should refund the card the room was paid for on. And the OP paid for it using her own card.

Do you know if your friend used a credit card or debit? If it was a debit card then it should be easy enough to transfer the money, if it was a credit card it will be much more difficult for her and you would probably need to get the hotel to sort it out. You can't expect your friend to take cash off a credit card to repay you - it wouldn't be fair.

MiddleClassProblem · 31/10/2017 15:39

To refund the card over the phone they would have to go through credit card receipts of that day with a hotel that’s a lot.

There’s a reason shops require you to bring a receipt for a refund. To check you are genuine. They wouldn’t do this over the phone as you could be anybody with any card. Surely you can understand that? And that the time to shift through receipts probably for the same amount is pointless when as a hotel they have a card stored for the booking already...

MiddleClassProblem · 31/10/2017 15:40

If the op was asking at check out or came back in person with a receipt (but bring a hotel that’s an unlikely thing for a customer to do) it would be different

DunkMeInTomatoSoup · 31/10/2017 15:42

Beg pardon - I read the first lint 'they booked' - apologies

whiskyowl · 31/10/2017 15:51

I think it's really mean of you to assume that the onus is on her to notice and tell you. Many people don't manage their finances that closely. You sound very suspicious and ungenerous of spirit in rushing to the implicit assumption that she's trying to steal from you. Just explain the situation and ask her what she wants to do.
