Fax machine - yes or no

TheSnowFairy · 30/10/2017 17:40

I don't use a fax machine, ever. There isn't one at work either.

My Dr has just asked me to fax over my request for a repeat prescription Confused Seemed surprised I didn't have easy access to fax.

So, do you ever use a fax machine - yay or nay?

Not for many years.

AlexanderHamilton · 30/10/2017 17:41

Yes we have one at work but not at home.

Nikephorus · 30/10/2017 17:42

Nope - I used to have a fax number provided by a service who would send the fax by email to me but I even gave that up as no-one used it. Scan & email is what goes now.

MongerTruffle · 30/10/2017 17:42

I have never, in my entire life, used a fax machine.

Scribblegirl · 30/10/2017 17:46

Yes but I work in the legal industry, which, despite being at pains to describe itself as 'innovative', is still a bit iffy on service of documents via email

LoniceraJaponica · 30/10/2017 17:47

Can you not email instead?

VivienneWestwoodsKnickers · 30/10/2017 17:48

Even the civil service has abandoned gfax machines! last year

FlexTimeCheekyFucker · 30/10/2017 17:48

God no. Not for years. It's scan and email now. Bless.

Aquamarine1029 · 30/10/2017 17:48

Does your doctor think it's 1992?

BenLui · 30/10/2017 17:49

Haven’t used one for years.

Surely you can email it instead?

Interestingly I read that faxes are still popular in Japan, something to do with the importance of handwritten signatures there.

SilverSpot · 30/10/2017 17:49

Work just got rid of fax machines last year. No one. Absolutely NO ONE uses fax machines any more.

Beequeeny · 30/10/2017 17:50

Not for about 20 years. Just take a photo on your phone and email it

HotelEuphoria · 30/10/2017 17:50

Scan and email now, faxes were new when I started work, in 1985!

Glumglowworm · 30/10/2017 17:50

Yes at work but we've finally caught up with the 21st century and can send and receive things by email now that we used to fax. We still insist on old fashioned post for some things though.

dangermouseisace · 30/10/2017 17:51

I have to use fax for confidential docs as standard email isn't secure enough apparently.

IAmTheDragon · 30/10/2017 17:52

Scan and email - Dr probably just had a brain fart and used the wrong word!

PantPlot · 30/10/2017 17:53

Faxing lol.

Did they want you to page them when it was done as well?

Biggreygoose · 30/10/2017 17:53

There are email to fax services available.

madamginger · 30/10/2017 17:55

Every day, I work in Pharmacy and I send about 50 faxes a day, which is probably why your GP wants a fax.

TheSnowFairy · 30/10/2017 17:55

lonicera and everyone else who recommended emailing - I did ask but they said the choices were either to fax, or to go down there and fill in the request slip.

Aqua - Does your doctor think it's 1992?

I use one every day at work (the NHS). I couldn't believe my eyes when I was shown around the office on my first day.

HoobleDooble · 30/10/2017 17:56

We still use one at work, but I think we in the minority. My dad still refers to facsimiles and asks me if I can photostat things for him (I usually ask if he wants it done onto foolscap, just to play along) Grin

amazingtracy · 30/10/2017 17:57

ah.....I'd think it a very quaint request.

AtiaoftheJulii · 30/10/2017 17:59

Yup, NHS worker here and I fax stuff every week if not quite every day. Mostly to GPs. They like things in writing.

outabout · 30/10/2017 17:59

Not sure if anyone would like some useless information but a fax is preferable to email in instances where there could be problems if the 'image' was doctored. A fax message cannot be 'intercepted' as it relies on 2 and only 2 'machines' 'talking' to each other in real time and the message cannot be stored. Emails can be 'stored' and then altered.
You can use a computer as a fax machine but it must be understood that the possibility of interception is there although the risk may be deemed acceptable.
