Fax machine - yes or no

TheSnowFairy · 30/10/2017 17:40

I don't use a fax machine, ever. There isn't one at work either.

My Dr has just asked me to fax over my request for a repeat prescription Confused Seemed surprised I didn't have easy access to fax.

So, do you ever use a fax machine - yay or nay?

outabout DD's school always sends letters as PDF attachments so they can't be edited. Most people have Adobe Acrobat Reader, but not Editor.

Sn0tnose · 30/10/2017 18:19

Even the civil service has abandoned gfax machines! last year. Not everywhere it hasn't! Wink

MrsEight · 30/10/2017 18:20

Where is your Drs? The Past?

topcat2014 · 30/10/2017 18:23

Our large copier at work has fax built in. We sell to big name companies, (think aerospace etc) and they send their purchase orders to us via fax.

We always say '1994 is calling' each time it starts beeping.

outabout · 30/10/2017 19:27

The point of a fax is that the transmission is 'secure' as it will only work from 1 machine to another in real time. You can't copy or store it. It uses a 'normal' telephone line and once it has finished it is not present in a 'retrievable' way on the telephone network.
Emails (and digital documents) can be and are stored and even when encrypted can be read if you put enough computer power behind it (Police/MI5/FBI).

Ttbb · 30/10/2017 19:33

I've used one twice in my life. Literally.

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 30/10/2017 19:44

NHS here, our trust has finally moved over to digital faxing. It's complicated and I miss the fax machine.

The pharmacy still asks for faxes if we request orders out of normal hours and the digital faxing thing seems unnecessarily complicated.

SparklyUnicornPoo · 30/10/2017 19:46

We have one at work (in a school), I think it is the only fax machine I have ever seen and I've only seen it used once, which was when I got a colleague to show me how it worked

SomedayMyPrinceWillCome · 30/10/2017 19:47

We have a fax bu then I do work for the NHS!!

Firesuit · 30/10/2017 19:51

The last time I sent one was 2012 - and that was to the immigration service who needed a signed document. At that time I still had an old-fashioned modem in my obsolete parts box, once installed in a PC and with the right software it could be persuaded to send a fax.

I'm sure there will be services on the web you can use to send a fax.

For legal purposes, I think a photo of a signed document has the same status as a fax.

I moved my landline number to a VOIP provider recently, and there are regulatory requirements associated with that (as the number has to be associated with an address for emergency call purposes) and they accepted a photo of a signed form for that.

BeachyKeen · 30/10/2017 19:53

Just bought one last month. Started a small business and bought a 4 in 1.
Ended up needing to fax transcripts for someone last week

allegretto · 30/10/2017 19:56

I love in Italy where they are still in love with the fax. My children's school asked me to fax them recently.

justdontevenfuckingstart · 30/10/2017 19:58

We have one company we deal with at work that still use fax (ours is in the copier)

bluebump · 30/10/2017 20:00

I just took our old fax machine to the tip last week. We haven't used it for years, DS used to use it as a toy!

rslsys · 30/10/2017 20:05

I'm led to believe that the NHS is still the largest purchaser of Fax machines - IN THE WORLD!

SocksRock · 30/10/2017 20:10

We have a fax number at work, but they come through as emails to our receptionist who forwards them to the recipient. If you need to send a fax, you scan and email it to reception with the number it is going to and it goes digital to fax.

We don’t even send letters from our office anymore, you send your letter as a PDF to an email address and they print and frank and send centrally.

TuckersBadLuck · 30/10/2017 20:29

I have one gathering dust on a shelf and another one built in to my all-in-one printer/scanner thing. Like most people with a modern computer I also have access to the 'Fax and Scan' app that's built in to Windows. Although now I come to think of it I haven't had a computer with a modem for about 15 years so that won't work. Grin

I haven't sent a fax for at least 10 years but I do receive a junk fax through a fax to email number about once a month.

ThePinkOcelot · 30/10/2017 21:00

I still use a fax on a daily basis. Another NHS worker here. The Trust did plan to remove all faxes on 31 October, but as they were giving us nothing in return, we complained and the fax will stay until alternate arrangements are made.

Bobbybobbins · 30/10/2017 21:13

We use one at school every now and again. I love it!!

lionsleepstonight · 30/10/2017 21:15

Hello Dr,
1997 just called, they want their fax back!

Hope their medical knowledge is more up to date than their tech.

TheSnowFairy · 30/10/2017 21:17

bobby I work in a school too and we don't have one any more!

So it's the NHS keeping the use of faxes going... Grin

Hahah, this reminds of when I was a Medical Secretary and used a fax machine approx. every half an hour (in swanky private practice!). I was astonished at first but came to be very fond of it. The medical profession bloody love them! Banks use them too - I used to get faxes from a Kensington branch of HSBC, didn't matter how many times I called them to tell them, it kept happening. I just shredded them but it does highlight a flaw in the fax magic.

DramaAlpaca · 30/10/2017 21:20

We have a fax machine at work as a lot of our customers still insist on using them.

PinguDance · 30/10/2017 21:22

They are very good for signatures - think that is somewhere in the logic of using the for prescriptions.

WinkyisbackontheButterBeer · 30/10/2017 21:22

Yep. I’m a teacher. My local authority won’t let me email certain documents as the email is not secure but apparently faxing them is ok. Hmm
