AIBU to really hate religion?

My 5 year old great niece is very upset right now,
She was given a fairy door- small wooden one that sticks on the bottom of a skirting board.
My sister- very religious has seen it in her room, ripped it off and broken it telling the child that Satan will come through and it is an evil trap.
I am trying to be respectful of my sister's religion but it is hard.

That's nothing to do with religion. That's your sister being a cunt.

The hatred of magic and fairys and stuff is a very medieval version of Christianity, I'm not religious myself but I don't hate religion, lots of very lovely religious folk out there, quietly being relgious. I do think religion is used as a form of control by a lot of people though. Gives them a handy book of (pretty contradictory) rules to keep their children/womenfolk/working classes in line.
In your case I think I'd have a problem with my sister, not religion. You can object to fairy doors without ripping them off walls and wittering about Satan.

I personally would pay money to see Satan coming in through a fairy door. I imagine him swishing through some sort of fabulous drag outfit, flicking his hair.

I agree with you OP. I remember a friend of mine saying that she had shown her children 'photos' of Satan online along with dire warnings about what would happen if they did XYZ. Terrifying your children into obeying you is emotional abuse. None of that is anything I could respect

Not part of her religion. Part of her personality. It's time people stopped using religion to blame for their actions and took some ownership.

This is the same lady that told me that evolution is made up and "utter nonsense" I should add, I'm a scientist. I was told at the time I can't argue back "because it's offensive to argue with her beliefs".

The thought of living my whole life praying and saying sorry for my sins and judging people for not being religious, it's just insanity. She's anti abortion, anti anything the bible says is a sin. She's bitter and filled with rage at just about anything!

I like some aspects of religion. I have a Buddhist friend. He's a very calming influence on me and does not force his beliefs on me. He's great and very interesting to chat to.

If, as an atheist, I'm not allowed to voice my views then why the hell should people be allowed to pull fairy doors off! Makes me really angry.

There is no religion I know of that focuses on trap doors. If she is that deranged, then I expect she could equally well have been a deranged atheist and wrecked something because she insisted it was religious.

Don't be respectful, she's an extremist. I find the people who obsess over Satan and demons a bit weird, surely you should care more about the other side? And don't get me started on the "Satan will make you do xyz if you don't do abc!"

It's the "magic" aspect that people don't like. Certain Christians don't like it and think it's evil. There was a thread not that long ago about some idiot spoiling a Halloween disco for a whole school because it was evil

Yanbu. DD’s Baptist friend wasn’t allowed to go on a school trip to Rome because she would be visiting the Vatican. Her Mum and Dad has and still have some v peculiar views IMO.

I grew up in a very religious house, my dad is a church minister and my mum was very very religious. What your sister did isn’t about religion, it’s about her twisted interpretation of it and scaring the shit out of a 5 yo. That’s brutal.
I’m an atheist, but YABU to hate all religion based on your sister’s frankly batshit reaction to something. Surely you’re more concerned with the impact this is having on a small child?
