To be absolutely disgusted with Bim Adewunmi's article?

Re Harvey Weinstein.

I don't even know how to explain all the reasons why her article made me so angry. Hundreds of women were sexually assaulted and/or raped, and Adewunmi's problem is that they were all white. So apparently it is racist not to molest black women now? In her article, she had basically offended both white and black women.

Urgh. What a vile creature.

OP I also think you've very much missed the point. She hasn't "turned it into" a race issue (whatever that means - race issues are part and parcel of nearly every human issue) - the subhead even states it "is another story".
If you could actually state any of what she actually says and why it's incorrect rather than "so, apparently... [something in your own words]" that might help explain your point.

this is about the Victims.

The key point is that the victims are women.

Weinstein et al may discriminate and abuse different women in different ways according to their predatory preferences regarding age, race, appearance, but its all aspects of the same underlying problem which is abuse of power by misogyny operating within a patriarchy.

Pansiesandredrosesandmarigolds · 28/10/2017 15:12

Would this pass muster as second wave analysis?

Weinstein criminally abused his power over women as a man and as a gatekeeper to jobs/work/status/money/fame/validation as an actress.

He did so by sexually abusing women.

He also did so by preventing other women from access to those jobs.

In many cases this was the colour of their skin.

Pansiesandredrosesandmarigolds · 28/10/2017 15:12

Gah ‘because of the colour of their skin’

Valentine2 · 28/10/2017 15:12

I don’t think her point is disgusting at all. Her point is “Black women do not often come up for the kind of prestigious high-profile and award-winning roles that a producer with Weinstein’s power could offer“ which is I think pretty much empirically true.

^ This. X 10.
The only woman of colour on that list, who actually went on to win an oscar too, punted exactly the same picture of him as the white women did.
The system simply doesn't offer nice roles to white women, let alone women of colour.
That was her point so YABU.

64BooLane · 28/10/2017 15:14

Agree that you have missed the point.

"turning it into a race issue"

kmc1111 · 28/10/2017 15:16

And in this case, the victims were mostly white. Doesn't make it any less dreadful.

Absolutely nothing about this article is suggesting the crimes Weinstein committed were in any way less horrific because he primarily targeted white women.

Pumperthepumper · 28/10/2017 15:16

I had a whole post written out but Valentine's is much more succinct so I'm just here to say - I absolutely agree with Valentine.

YABU.

Pumperthepumper · 28/10/2017 15:17

...and the PP who Valentine quoted.

FuckShitJackFairy · 28/10/2017 15:18

This is beside the point but calling this a scadal doesn't sit right. Scadal sounds titilating, naughty but exciting bit of gossip-like angilina stealing bp or similar. This is women's abuse and vicitimisation, or a man's crimes. Scadal seems dissmissive.

FuckShitJackFairy · 28/10/2017 15:19

*scandal obvs

BertrandRussell · 28/10/2017 15:20

I have a suspicion about who's turning it into a race issue. And it's not Adewumni.

Battleax · 28/10/2017 15:24

Bert you jest, surely?

Opening para of the article;

The elephant in the room in discussions about the alleged crimes and misdemeanors of Hollywood film producer Harvey Weinstein looks eerily similar to an elephant of the past. It is the Race elephant. And among the allegations, the question of race is one that we are not really looking to engage with, because it is knotty and gnarly. But it bears talking about, because there are black women in Hollywood, and not talking about it does us all a disservice.

Tinycitrus · 28/10/2017 15:31

I think it’s a fascinating article. I never thought about it like that - it’s true - but I think there are many other perspectives as well.

Hollywood is founded on sex and money and looks/power/wealth will trump talent every time.

So yes HW’s penis obviously had a preference for skinny white women. Many other talented women would have got those roles if they had screen tested and been judged on their talent. And therefore much more difficult for a black woman.

But was Hollywood ever a shining light for equality?

64BooLane · 28/10/2017 15:32

So we all acknowledge Hollywood is racist... but for Bim Adewunmi to write a comment piece about how that structural reality interleaves with the revelations about Weinstein is somehow not OK?

Why is it not OK, exactly? What is it about it that makes her, to quote the OP, a "vile creature"? (I'm super uncomfortable with that wording btw - she is not a "creature")

Tinycitrus · 28/10/2017 15:35

I think Hollywood and the Oscars shines a light on US values around race, gender and class.

Lazy2Hazy · 28/10/2017 15:46

“turning it into a race issue” - a white privilege proverb

hackmum · 28/10/2017 15:51

I thought it was an interesting piece. Weinstein used his power against white and black actresses, but in different ways.

VladmirsPoutine · 28/10/2017 15:54

and Adewunmis is turning it into a race issue

You must be just goading now.... surely no-one but no-one can be as obtuse as you are being?
