Hi all, we're planning on watching scary films on Halloween night.......no idea why, I'm such a wimp. Anyhoo, any recommendations from you wise souls? A good slasher film perhaps? Tia

The original Halloween with Jamie Lee Curtis still scares me.

skippy67 · 29/10/2017 09:43

Hush is super creepy. I loved it.

DrBlackbird · 29/10/2017 10:28

Jumping in here with request for suggestions for Halloween movies for 12 yr old dd and her cousin?? Can't be anything slasher or too scary but alas they're too old now for Monster House or Scared Shrekless. Really struggling to find in between adult and child scary movie!

I third The Orphanage. As all good horror films are, it is full of regret, guilt, loss and sadness.

It looks beautiful as well, set around the glorious Asturias coastline.

Also An American Werewolf In London. A comedy-horror that, unusually, gets both of those elements absolutely right. Cracking soundtrack too.

The Grudge
The Thing
The Fog (original)
Grave Encounters

upperlimit · 29/10/2017 15:43

Oh, I love The Thing. I'm going to watch that tonight.

I like 30 days of Night and the Exorcist.

VladmirsPoutine · 29/10/2017 15:52

I.T. - the original one. Watched it when I was a child and have since been terrified of clowns.

eyebrowsonfleek · 29/10/2017 19:54

DrBlackbird - The Woman in Black is a 12A

afrikat · 29/10/2017 20:09

The Orphanage is a brilliant film. Pans Labyrinth and The Devil's Backbone are awesome too

Great horror comedies: Severance, The Cabin in the Woods, Tucker and Dale vs Evil, Dog Soldiers, all the Screams, Shaun of the Dead

Other fab horror films: Train to Busan, Ringu, Audition, Sinister, It Follows, Candyman, Halloween, Rec, The Thing, 28 Days Later

'Suspiria' directed by Dario Aregento. Rregarded as one of the best in the genre made in 1977. Excellent film.

steff13 · 30/10/2017 04:27

Paranormal Activity. So creepy.

The Orphanage. Especially upsetting as a parent, in my opinion. My husband actually yelled "holy shit" in the theater at one point.
I love the Scream movies.
Frailty if you can find it.

BadTasteFlump · 30/10/2017 11:08

DrBlackBird have they seen Coraline? My DC love that - even the older teens - it's really dark & creepy despite being animated. Or Hocus Pocus - I love that, very Halloween themed.

Beetlejuice is good too - I think the orginal was a 15 but we bought it again recently and it was only a PG - still good halloween fun though...

If you want something to genuinely scare them (a bit) The Others is only a 12 rating but is really spooky.

Candyman......I still can’t look in a mirror and say his name 😱

ohtheholidays · 30/10/2017 23:44

Mama Envy (what colour I went when I watched it)it's a brilliant film.
Paranormal activity(all of them)
Resident evil.
The Thing(watched that when I was far to young)didn't sleep properly for a week afterwards.
Any Nightmare on Elm street film and any Chucky film.
White Noise and White Noise 2.
Silent Hill 1 and 2 fucking sick bits in both of those films but they are good.

thenightsky · 30/10/2017 23:49

30 days of night is THE best vampire film.

HelenaDove · 31/10/2017 01:35

Anything with Peter Cushing in it. Including Nothing But The Night which also stars Diana Dors and a very young Gwyneth Strong (Cassandra from Only Fools and Horses.)

mathanxiety · 31/10/2017 05:14

'The Ruling Class' starring Peter O'Toole.

'The Dark Angel' - based on the gothic tale 'Uncle SIlas' (movie made in 1947). Much more deliciously evil than the 1947 effort imo. Starring Peter O'Toole, who does dangerously unhinged very well.

Both really creepy as opposed to slasher.

flimflaminurjams · 31/10/2017 10:03

Hocus Pocus. I don't do anything scarier than that lol

Greenicicle · 31/10/2017 11:55

Highly recommended Shutter. I think its on Netflix

oobedobe · 31/10/2017 19:33

Also don't forget horror/sci-fi we just saw Alien Covenant and it was very good.
Also any of the earlier Alien movies, Event Horizon, Cloverfield, They Live...

However we are watching Shaun of the Dead - fancy a laugh more than a scare tonight!

NameChangeFamousFolk · 31/10/2017 20:48

The Japanese version of Dark Water. I could barely watch some of it.

Can anyone recommend some excellent spooky, ghostly films up to cert 15, with no gore or bloody scenes?

User375169 · 31/10/2017 20:52

American Werewolf in London.

HelenaDove · 31/10/2017 21:10

Name Lady in White which was mentioned upthread. Its usually shown at Christmas.

Warning...........its sad and the ending made me cry.

NameChangeFamousFolk · 31/10/2017 21:35

Thanks HelenaDove I'll check it out, although I'm a bit rubbish at sad films!
