To think i should have lost some weight?

I am very overweight and for the last 2 weeks I've cut out sugar. This is massive for me as on a regular day I would eat a sharing bag of chocolate, biscuits, sweets on top of my usual meals. So now I am eating the same but minus the 1000s of calories of all the sugar treats. So, for example, a usual day will be -

Breakfast - wholemeal toast with cashew nut butter, banana
Lunch - 1x ham sandwich or a sausage roll, grapes
Dinner - sausage casserole, greek yoghurt and then fruit

Sometimes I've had pizza and unhealthy options but no different to my usual diet just minus all the snacks. Sometimes i was eating up to 2000 calories in sugar filled snacks.

I am sticking with it but its a but gutting not to see a massive difference. Ive lost 4 pounds but nothing this week. Surely it should be falling off given I am 4 stone overweight?

People are so sanctimonious. The OP has made huge changes to her diet. She should be encouraged and applauded. I hate the sugar nazis and their horror of fruit and other completely normal and healthy food. It's a form of eating disorder! You have Davina and Deluded Ella to thank...

IJustLostTheGame · 27/10/2017 14:05

You've made a tremendous start.
I found it easier to work out what I had to put into my body rather than what I was cutting out. It seemed more positive somehow.
So I'd have to eat 1400 calories a day and I'd use the Samsung health app to see what nutrients I was eating and adjust accordingly.
Do whatever works for you.
And absolutely work out the correct portion sizes for things, That makes a massive difference.

DiegoMadonna · 27/10/2017 14:05

2,000 calories a day is maintaining your weight, so its too high

I think it's a bit early to say that. OP lost 4 lbs over 2 weeks, which is pretty good. In the short-term there are way too many variables to say that not losing weight for just one week means you're eating too many calories.

OP, I would give it a few more weeks, and only then if you still haven't lost any more weight, consider restricting your calories further.

cordeliavorkosigan · 27/10/2017 14:05

I'd add more veg that you like - nice kale salads sprinkled with nuts, etc - to displace some of the carbs
but reducing that much sugar is amazing and will be brilliant for your health, whatever your looks are.
it's possible that you were slowly gaining weight with those extra 2000cals and now that has stopped. that would explain why you haven't seen a loss. but it's not immediate in any case.

messyjessy17 · 27/10/2017 14:06

How can anyone say that a diet isnt improved by cutting out 2000 plus calories of chocolate, sweets etc per day?!! I honestly think this is a massive improvement

It's a huge improvement. But that doesn't mean weight loss. You lose weight when you take in less calories than you use. If you are taking in less, even a lot less, but still more than you use, you won't lose weight. You'll just stop putting weight on, or put it on slower.

You also need to give it more than 2 weeks.

Mrscog · 27/10/2017 14:08

Op well done. I think the advice to let this change settle then move to something else is really wise.

What are you doing for drinks? They can be surprisingly calorific - possibly the next thing to look at.

Please don’t be disheartened by some of the harsher comments here.

Fuckoffee · 27/10/2017 14:09

Well done on cutting out so much sugar. It's addictive stuff, when I cut it out I get headaches and feel pretty ropey for a few days.

Remember too that whilst you may feel you have "only" lost 4lbs, you haven't continued gaining. If you were still eating all that sugar you might be 6/8/10lbs heavier than you were a few weeks ago.

rightknockered · 27/10/2017 14:13

I think you're going in the right over all direction OP
Just keep going, one week without loss doesn't matter in the long run. And well done for giving up the sugary treats

GreenPetal94 · 27/10/2017 14:15

There is a kind of calorie level you need to go below to lose weight. Mine is actually quite low, so when I want to lose weight I have to really cut down. Unfortunately it does vary from person to person. You want to aim to lose 2 pounds a week or similar, so it is a slow process. Good luck. I did protein and veg with a wee bit of carbs.

Lovemusic33 · 27/10/2017 14:16

Cut out the sausage rolls and limit your bread intake (your having toast for breakfast and a sandwich for lunch as well as a sausage roll) maybe swap your sandwich for a jacket potato which is more filling so you won't need a sausage roll, add some salad, there's no need to starve when your on a diet, just cut out the crap and replace for good foods. I eat loads but rarely touch bread and never touch pastry (full of fat). Cutting out sugar doesn't make you lose weight, makes you healthier but cutting down on fat will help you lose weight as well as doing a bit of exercise.

You could try tracking what you're eating using something like Myfitnesspal. It's a bore at first but it gets easier and I think you would find it quite eye-opening so long as you are conscientiously logging everything you eat including portion sizes.

Also two weeks isn't much at all.

londonginge · 27/10/2017 14:21

Don't listen to negative comments. You're doing amazingly to have made all those changes and to keep it up - stick with it and you will see results. Particularly if you're starting to dial up the exercise.

LittleGwyneth · 27/10/2017 14:22

That is a massive improvement and you should be proud of yourself. People are super harsh about diet stuff here - don't let it get you down.

madnessintheroost · 27/10/2017 14:23

You need to control fat and sugar. Sugar is also found in carbs. Your breakfast lunch and dinner are not completely healthy for that reason, although you have taken first steps.

Look to slimming world rules. If you can stay away from syns, the weight can drop off. The ham with no fat/sauces/breadcrumbs is good for you - protein, the bread can be part of your allowances but you need to cut out butter and especially nut butter

Jenala · 27/10/2017 14:23

Fruit is sugar. And there is a lot of carbohydrate in there, which will be converted to glucose very quickly.

I have been in your position. If you have been eating a lot of sugary snacks you probably have high insulin (hyperinsulinemia). If you eat a lot of sugar your body pumps out more insulin in order to keep your blood sugar under control, which may work but unfortunately insulin has the dual purpose of also signalling to your body not to burn stored energy (fat). As long as you regularly eat fruit sugar and carbohydrates, your insulin won't settle and you will find it hard to lose weight (and probably also feel quite hungry).

I cut calories to 1500 a day, incorporated a high protein, moderate carb, low fat diet; saw a personal trainer 3 times a week (cardio and weights) for 8 weeks and lost 2lbs and an inch off my waist. I honestly thought I must have an illness that just didn't have a name Grin I stuck to the plan rigidly, my personal trainer couldn't believe it.

Then I switched to a high fat, moderate protein, low fat diet and lost over a stone in 8 weeks and it's still coming off. I eat 2000+ calories a day though I don't count them but I track my macros and mfp counts calories. I was only doing yoga once a week at the time too, though I'm now incorporating running.

Insulin is key I'm certain of that these days. I fucked it by binge eating sugary shit. Hoping I can reverse that now.

ButchyRestingFace · 27/10/2017 14:26

How much weight were you expecting to lose in two weeks?

Well done on the sugar purge. 👍

Jenala · 27/10/2017 14:28

Only just realised it was a fortnight. I read 2 months. 4lbs is good for a fortnight. Read my previous post if you want to keep momentum.

TrollTheRespawnJeremy · 27/10/2017 14:31

I would really recommend Slimming World, it tells you what you can and can't have (you can have anything if you budget for it) and how to make healthier substitutions to allow you to make more of your daily food budget.

Healthy eating is a minefield, and there's so many diets/options. Low carb/High protein/Calorie counting etc.

I can't be bothered with any of that. A) I don't have time B) I don't want to feel restricted.

I joined 6 weeks ago and have lost a stone. So not a quick loss but fairly significant. (I was over 16st) I am hoping to just keep plugging away at it.

TeeBee · 27/10/2017 14:35

I would say you've made a fantastic start. I often find that if I diet really hard I don't see much outcome at all for the first 2-3 weeks, and then it starts to come off really quickly (even a 1-2lb per day), if I'm consistent! So I would say just keep at it and you will see improvements. And then, you will be able to see areas where you can cut back more, and you will then start exercising more...because it is so damned hard to exercise when you are carrying excess weight. Well done, keep going!!

shhhfastasleep · 27/10/2017 14:36

Well done on the sugar. Having done the same thing myself I know how hard it is. It takes more than dropping sugar to lose weight but it’s a good start.
Try Couch 2 5k. Seriously. I thought it was a ridiculous idea for me but it has really helped me start to shift weight.

hula008 · 27/10/2017 14:36

I eat peanut butter on toast in the morning but it’s massively calorific (600 calories for 2 slices). I eat it because it is the only way I can get through to lunch (I’m not a good “snacker”), but this means to be in calorie deficit I have to make significant changes to my lunch and dinner.

I also might have just one slice and then something else like an apple. I’ve lost a stone in 8 weeks.

comingintomyown · 27/10/2017 14:38

Google a picture of 1lb of body fat - you have lost 4 of them well done !!

OctoberGold · 27/10/2017 14:40

Firstly, well done on cutting out so much!

You can absolutely lose weight without eating healthy. Of course it is always best to be healthy where you can but sometimes having the unhealthy meal or snack (within calorie limits) is what gets you by and that is absolutely fine!!

I have lost 3 stone since April this year by lowering my calorie intake to 1400 (i'm short and pretty inactive). If I stall for a few weeks and want to kick start loss I go down to 1000 for 2-3 days. I haven't regained any weight following this when going back up to 1400 and still continue to lose albeit more slowly than when I first ever started.

I started off by eating what I wanted (crap, unhealthy meals) as long as it was within calories. Then after a while I started to just naturally choose lower calorie options. And then after another while, I noticed that food I previously hated (salad, lots of veg etc.) I actually didn't mind anymore - perhaps because when I was hungry, I was actually properly hungry and so less fussy than I had been.

My portions have massively reduced and I now actually can't eat the amounts I used to.

Good luck on your journey!

justilou1 · 27/10/2017 14:41

I think the first thing you should do is find A diet, research it and stick to it.
If you mix and match various diets - i.e.. low-carb, low-fat and low calorie diets they won't work. They are all designed to work in different ways.
Just cutting out "sugar" isn't going to help if you replace it with low-nutrient, high-calorie foods like sausages and sausage rolls.
