To be mightily pissed off with DH and his sister?

dd1(5) and dd2(8) went out with my sil for the day, they had breakfast here (scrambled egg) and sil picked them up at 9.30.

Sil brought them back at 7.30 and even though they had had a fab day, being to cinema, got loads of clothes etc, all they had had to eat was some pic 'n' mix at the cinema and scrambled egg about 1-2 o clock. I am soooooooooooooo annoyed that they didn't have something more substantial.

I told dh, and, because it was his sister (and she says she's not well) he said it's ok, bet they didn't mention the amount of sweets they had had

How on earth can anyone say that it is ok for 2 growing children to nibble on sweets all day AND have scrambled egg twice.

It only happened the once though, surely it won't do them any harm.

oranges · 13/04/2007 08:48

what's wrong with scrambled egg twice?

tinkerbellhadpiles · 13/04/2007 08:49

Scrambled egg on toast isn't necessarily a bad choice and hey, they will be SICK of sweets today! Don't sweat it on that score. DH should at least have supported you though. Perhaps next time you should be prescriptive in what you want them to eat and tell your SiL - or send them with a packed lunch if she doesn't get the hint!

Freckle · 13/04/2007 08:51

Maybe she didn't know what they'd had for breakfast when she gave them that for lunch.

Honestly, if your SIL gave your girls a fab and and spent what sounds like a small fortune on them, I do think you are being unreasonable to grouse about this.

PeckaRolloverAgain · 13/04/2007 08:54

I think your being unreasonable.

~I would rather my kids were taken out by someone who takes an active interest in them, enjoys their company and has fun with them than them being at home having perfect nutrition.

It was only one day and it sounds like they all had a lovely time.

lulumama · 13/04/2007 08:56

scrambled eggs is not the worst thing to have twice in a day, and when my DCs are taken out, they do get more sweets and treats than i would give, so once in a while, i don;t see it as a problem, every day yes, but not as a special day out

Saturn74 · 13/04/2007 08:56

I think that as long as they had a lovely time together, it isn't worth getting upset about, tbh. It was nice of her to take them out for the day.

MintChocChippyMinton · 13/04/2007 08:58

Unreasonable. Nothing wrong with scrambled egg twice. I would say it was a sensible choice by your SIL, espacially if you normally give them a cooked tea.

kimi · 13/04/2007 08:59

Wish I had such a nice sister in law tbh.

I know before DH1 and I had children we use to take his neices and nephews out and give them far too many sweets.
I take it your SIL has no children?

As they had had breakfast, and I'm sure you were giving them dinner then she just gave them lunch, and maybe they ask for egg again.

lemonaid · 13/04/2007 09:06

It's not the ideal day's food intake, but as a one-off it won't do them any harm.

tigermoth · 13/04/2007 09:09

Not an ideal diet, agree, but as the day was a one off, treat type of day, I think you should let it pass.

As Freckle says, she wasn't to know you had given them scrambled eggs and, after having lots of sweets, it's a light but nutrituous meal. Not good if they had had a larger meal and been sick over their new clothes!

It might be an idea to talk to your children about their sweet intake that day - especially your 8 year old. Did they sneak in more sweet eating than they were allowed, or did the adults know they were scoffing as many sweets as they did?

FrannyandZooey · 13/04/2007 09:13

I wouldn't be happy about the sweets but don't understand the scrambled eggs...

I think if (like me) you have strong views on what you want your children to eat, you need to discuss this in advance of trips out and not just expect other people to magically feed them what you would have wanted them to have. Most people would naturally buy a lot of sweets for a child at the cinema, it's kind of a tradition for a lot of people.

It was kind of her to take them out, wasn't it? Try to focus on the kindness and gloss over the othe bit. Next time you could speak to her beforehand about "just a small bag of sweets, please" or whatever.

moondog · 13/04/2007 09:15

Gosh, even I (food fascist extraordinaire) would have no problem with this.
They have a loving auntie who gave them a nice day.
Be thankful.
If people take my children out,I wouldn't dream of dictating what they can and can't eat.
If it's Lunchables and Fruitshoots all the way,so be it.

I think you are being unreasonable, my dd's eat heathy meals but if we go out for the day we are more relaxed about what they eat. They must of had a lovely time, a few sweets won't kill them.

Radley · 13/04/2007 09:23

I don't mind that they had scrambled egg twice in one day, what I do mind is that I don't think they had enough to eat during the day, they are very active and eats loads of fruit etc during the day

OP posts:
Radley · 13/04/2007 09:24

Oh and I couldn't have given them a cooked tea as I didn't know what time they were coming home and got in at 7.45pm

GamePointGary · 13/04/2007 09:24

try and put things into perspective dear

Radley · 13/04/2007 09:25

DON'T dear me!

gess · 13/04/2007 09:25

moondog I feel you saying "If it's Lunchables and Fruitshoots all the way,so be it." has to be marked in some sort of way

If someone would take all my children off me for an entire day I wouldn't care what they ate (Meanwhile I'd be hotfooting it out the door to a quiet little restaurant for lunch )

FrannyandZooey · 13/04/2007 09:26

Did they come home tearful and droopy, or were they ok? If they were ok then it doesn't seem like a problem.

Has SIL got children? If you aren't used to looking after children you don't always know they need regular feeding. You can give hints next time she takes them out - "I've packed loads of snacks because they get grumpy if they don't eat fairly frequently."

joanna4 · 13/04/2007 09:26

If i go take my kids to my sil she doesnt even offer them so much as a drink.

PinkTulips · 13/04/2007 09:27

my god, if someone took my kids out for the day they could feed them nuclear waste for all i cared as long as they were out of my sight!

gess · 13/04/2007 09:27

If my children came back from a day out and I thought they hadn't earten enough to stay asleep all night I'd just do a quick round of toast plus banana and yoghurt. Takes minutes.
