Background - been on four dates. He's really fantastic. Really fab actually. Blush He cooked for me on Saturday - lemony chicken and a kind of fragrant sticky rice. He did chocolate creme brûlée for after, which was lovely. Simple but super tasty.

My "speciality" is lasagne. It's not very "attractive" though... Confused

Can I ask what you first cooked for your significant other and how it went? Any tips? I know we both hate mushrooms...

Lighthearted - so comments about impressing men with cooking and being the "little woman" are unnecessary for this thread. No bun fights unless they are olive focaccia... Wink- this is something I want to do and want to do well Grin

Thanks in advance

Veg lasagna and salad then Vienetta 😋
It worked, he didn't leave for 3 days, we worked our way through the leftovers

OP don't be tempted to do Beef Wellington for the first time, Great British Menu chefs seem to cock their ironic versions up regularly!

Good luck OP 🍷

Blackcatonthesofa · 25/10/2017 06:18

I think it was poule au pot because it's fancy french but easy to make. The second time was pasta with homemade pesto which he doesn't like (but was too in love to complain at the time)

Blackcatonthesofa · 25/10/2017 07:01

First time he cooked for me was a thai stir fry.

Lozmatoz · 25/10/2017 07:16

No idea! He does ALL the cooking, and really well. It was probably something like a chilli.... 1 pot wonder anyway.

PepperSteaks · 25/10/2017 08:18

A beef stroganoff using a kit they used to sell in Morrisons. There was so so much onion and mushroom which he hates but he didn’t tell me till weeks later.

GinevraFanshawe · 25/10/2017 08:20

Beef stew followed by lemon posset, garnished with strawberry slices cut into heart shapes. In my defence, I was a teenager at the time!

ButchyRestingFace · 25/10/2017 08:24

I 💕 lasagne.

I would be tres content if you cooked that for me.

bluebells1 · 25/10/2017 08:43

We were both vegetarian by the time we met. So I made him a Veggie pasta bake, Salad, garlic bread and a lemon cake for afters. He still loves it.

BikeRunSki · 25/10/2017 08:46

Roast chicken dinner and lemon meringue pie.

I’m veggie, so my flat mate cooked the chicken for me. In return, I sewed the button back on his “pulling”’shirt. We both married the people we were “entertaining” that nightmare few years later.

confusedlittleone · 25/10/2017 09:47

Mac and cheese 😂

Urubu · 25/10/2017 13:15

A ready meal, some crisps and a pack of biscuits for desert Blush we were teens... But since then he has decided he is in charge of the cooking - and still is 13y later!
Thats a win in my book Grin

Happydoingitjusttheonce · 25/10/2017 13:17

Steak and home made chips. He made me Thai green curry. We love cooking together a year on

peachgreen · 25/10/2017 13:42

Nigella’s sticky mirin salmon. It is utterly delicious and SO easy. Little Gu chocolate pots for dessert (didn’t want to look like I’d tried too hard!). It must have worked, he asked me to move in with him 3 weeks later and now we’re married with a baby on the way. Grin

Brienne · 25/10/2017 14:37

Jamie Oliver's carpaccio of beef. Delicious, super easy and you can cook the beef to your liking. If you don't like it rare, do it as recipe then put back into frying pan to finish off. Because it's fillet steak it's still delicious.
It has a real wow factor served on a large plate and is informal. Required minimal prep at the time just frying and slicing the beef. The rest can be done in advance.
It worked for me!!!!!!

DH and I met as students. Think the first 'nice' meal we cooked together was sausages, mash and onion gravy. I also remember arranging a romantic night in with him once and cooked a chicken, lemon, apricot and olive tagine thing with couscous.

Not sure I ever wooed him with my cooking skills tbh though... We both still think that we are the better cook . Definitely doomed! Don't take my advice on second thoughts Grin.

Mollie85 · 25/10/2017 16:22

After all that, I've decided to go with lasagne and rocket salad. I think I'll do garlic ciabatta too- I do love garlic bread but then I love carbs so much I could polish off lasagne, garlic bread and chips Grin

Liked the idea from the poster about separate dishes so may do that...

Thanks to all who posted - plenty of ideas for future if this lasts longer than Saturday! Smile

He mentioned on a previous date that he likes Rioja. I don't drink wine so am not sure which one to get - any tips?

I'm 36.
I'm panicking over wine.
This is ridiculous Wine

How did the dinner go?

munki · 30/10/2017 21:18

There are two meals I remember cooking for him in the early days, can’t remember which was first: breaded pork escalopes with apples, and pepper steak. Puddings were chocolate mousse and sticky toffee pudding. All Delia recipes

munki · 30/10/2017 21:19

Oops I’m a bit late! Hope it went well!

Loctite · 30/10/2017 21:25

How did the meal go??
Dh and I are together 18 years now and the first meal I cooked for him was a beef in red wine pie, topped with very indulgent creamy mash, with steamed greens. It was a recipe from the guardian and utterly delicious.

I made strawberry shortcake tarts with homemade custard for dessert and I think he fell in love that night!

I still love cooking for him to this day as he is REALLY appreciative of everything I cook and is massively complimentary about my cooking

Dustysparrow · 30/10/2017 21:32

Ha ha, the first meal I ever cooked my DH-to-be was one of those horrid reformed lamb steaks with chips - both burnt. To be fair it was a completely unplanned meal and I still lived with my parents so it was a case of rummaging in the freezer for something and making the best of it. I hadn't had much cooking experience at that point.....

PollyMycroft · 30/10/2017 21:34

Spag bol (we were much younger then). He asked for bread! Grin

Mollie85 · 31/10/2017 18:24

Actually and not to derail my own thread, it went really badly.

There was something I needed to tell him which I was panicking about (we’re a few dates in) and he took it quite badly and accused me of lying (which if you count by omission then yes I was doing).

Long story short - we shan’t be having dinner together any time soon Halloween Confused

Thanks for those of you who suggested ideas though and it was lovely to hear some of the stories also

Lamb shank in a minty gravy with mash and peas....his favourite, although I didn’t know that at the time x
