To give fruit out on halloween?

I was looking on pintrest last night and seen these (will attatch pic)

Would it be grim to give them out rather than sweets? I think they are fun. My sister thinks my house will be egged as a result.

To give fruit out on halloween?

Interesting experiment- try some of these with some sweets. Some children might well pick them, last year one of mine was craving fruit after eating too many sweets and asked for an apple. Personally I think it’s a lovely idea.

JonSnowsWife · 21/10/2017 17:19

Yes good idea to put some in a bowl but they'll probably still be a good handful the next day.

Fekko · 21/10/2017 17:21

Egged? Where do you live?? When I was little you'd get tangerines, monkey nuts, some sweeties and coins if you were lucky. And you had to do a party piece to 'earn' your goodies.

Llamacorn · 21/10/2017 17:22

Good to put some in alongside other treats, especially for kids with allergies. Dd3 gives 75% of her sweets to her sisters!

DearMrDilkington · 21/10/2017 17:23

My dd(5) would be really happy with fruit.

fairgame84 · 21/10/2017 17:26

I ran out of sweets one year and all I had left were apples. The kids loved them, particularly the older kids. I was really surprised, i thought they would be disappointed.

pallisers · 21/10/2017 17:26

I'd leave them out and give sweets too. Our neighbour doesn't like giving sweets so handed out the most wonderful little toys to the kids (we don't get many) every year - my kids loved it.

There is a halloween thing in our business district/down town every year. The dentist hands out toothbrushes. The bank is much more popular :)

soundsystem · 21/10/2017 17:26

My 3-year-old would be super-impressed with that, and would choose it over sweets. But agree older kids might prefer sweets!

CountDuckulaTheSqueaky · 21/10/2017 17:27

YABU. Yours will be the house that all the kids avoid. Halloween Grin

Marcipex · 21/10/2017 17:28

Wasn't there a news story last year about someone injecting fruit with toxic something...if you only go to neighbours you know that's different, but some children roam a larger area.
I wouldn't bother tbh.

Urubu · 21/10/2017 17:28

Same here, my 3yo DT would love the faces drawn and would pick it over sweets

dollydee · 21/10/2017 17:28

I did similar last year. I had a Halloween bucket with assorted sweets and chocolate; a bucket with assorted fruit and a container with doggy treats for the accompanying dogs 😁 I was surprised how many children chose fruit as well or instead of sweets.

khajiit13 · 21/10/2017 17:29

Alongside sweeties I think it's a nice idea

GummyGoddess · 21/10/2017 17:29

My old housemate used to give out these and also a small plastic toy that you might get in party bags as she didn't like giving them loads of sugar. Every year the children kept coming back for the tangerines! They adored them and my friend had fun drawing faces on them so it was a win win situation.

dollydee · 21/10/2017 17:29

Oops. That was supposed to be a smile, not a frown

Marcipex · 21/10/2017 17:30

I give Haribo etc, and dog treats.

CountDuckulaTheSqueaky · 21/10/2017 17:31

I just asked my DC, they said, "That's evil!" Halloween Grin

MrsHathaway · 21/10/2017 17:33

We've done these before and they were very popular but not the only choice.

This year we're doing popcorn: in plain or orange bags to be ghosts and pumpkins respectively with a little Sharpie work; glowsticks which honestly I can't recommend highly enough; and yes Haribo. I'm also doing some "hands" (latex gloves filled with little wrapped sweets from Lidl) when children we know turn up.

It's Pinterest-tastic round here BlushGrin

That1950sMum · 21/10/2017 17:33

Don't be a nob! You might make those with your own kids, but trick or treaters want haribos.

Yaley · 21/10/2017 17:33

I've just bought 2 bags of satsumas. I'm off to draw spooky faces on them for my fruit bowl - inspired!

Fromage · 21/10/2017 17:33

Dog treats?!

OP it's a great idea. I see for Halloween you're going as a killjoy.

Sweet for toddlers, but, er, sweets for the older kids.

Rainbowqueeen · 21/10/2017 17:35

I think offering them as a choice, with sweets as the other choice would be the way to go

TheKidsAreTakingMySanity · 21/10/2017 17:36

@Fekko Scotland huh?
When I moved up to Scotland from England i was confused at Halloween seeing everyone giving out tangerines and monkey nuts. (And homemade tablet)
In this area the whole process is different. No "Trick or treat?!" But "Are you's haudin'?" And then the householders asking the kids inside to perform a song or tell a joke. INSIDE!
No egging or silly string.

MaderiaCycle · 21/10/2017 17:37

It's one way of stopping kids knocking on your door in my experience. We ran out of sweets one year, and moved onto fruit....the stream of kids soon dried up.

"Don't go to number 3, she's giving out fruit......number 17 has mars bars..........."

Schmoopy · 21/10/2017 17:38

Just asked my 11 year old.

She'd choose one of those over sweets/chocolates if offered.

Why not offer both?

I think they're quite sweet.
