Not literally obviously! But the ideas and scale of space I just find completely mind blowing! After a few minutes I just have to think about something else!

Kick some kinds of infinity have an end. Like how there are ∞ numbers between 1 and 2 but we know 2 is the end. But then π has ∞ decimals and we can't know the last number. Which incidentally is how we "know" we aren't in a simulation

Vitalogy · 17/10/2017 15:49

Doesn't it just make you feel so tiny! I believe we're all part of the whole, so not tiny at all. We are "it"

Vitalogy · 17/10/2017 15:56

*I mean, everything has to end, doesn't it? There must be an edge somewhere, right? If space is infinite, and goes on forever, then where does it go to? But if it isn't infinite, then what's beyond it?
That's a good question, our whole existence and all we've ever know is that there is a beginning and end, a start and finish, what if there isn't a start or finish or a beginning and end, I don't think our brains have the capacity to comprehend this but doesn't mean it isn't so Shock

BeyondThePage · 17/10/2017 15:57

so you are made of particles/atoms which are billions of years old, possibly since the Big Bang

as an atheist I always find this comforting, almost every atom of our being has been around since the dawn of time, and almost every atom of our being will exist until the END of time... we are immortal, our atoms travel through time forever...

lemonsandlimes123 · 17/10/2017 16:00

onlyparents - i love your post about infinity, it's both completely clear and utterly mind bending at the same time Grin

beyond - that is a very comforting thought

don't even get me started on atoms! I just constantly come back to 'but what are they made of' Grin I think on closer examination I may infact be a bit of a dunce!

OP posts:
BeyondThePage · 17/10/2017 16:06

but what are they made of

the amazing thing is - that atoms are mostly made of nothing... nothing at all...

99.9999999% of the human body is nothing - empty space... so why CAN'T we pass through things!

lemonsandlimes123 · 17/10/2017 16:10

exactly!--makes no sense! Can't compute!

This is why I did not do physics at Uni!

WHAT????

That's crazy.

OnlyParentsAreReal · 17/10/2017 16:13

Atoms are mostly made of nothing, take out all the nothing and the world would fit in the palm of your hand. Other than that protons, neutrons, and electrons which are made out of quarks. What I want to know is if we could see and interpret anything smaller than a Planck length what would it be? Is their a measurement infinity smaller?

Vitalogy · 17/10/2017 16:13

so why CAN'T we pass through things! Different frequency and vibrations. They repel each other.

SpeverendRooner · 17/10/2017 16:14

Atoms are made of electrons, which aren't "made of" anything as far as we know, and protons and neutrons which are made up of different combinations of two types of quark, which are also not "made of" anything as far as we know.

This is the point where you bump into the edge of what we know about the world.

Vitalogy · 17/10/2017 16:15

The empty space I believe is the source/soul/life force/god.

SpeverendRooner · 17/10/2017 16:18

so why CAN'T we pass through things!
Get close to an atom and you can't treat it as an electrically neutral blob. It's a positively charged nucleus with a negatively charged electron cloud surrounding it. And the electron clouds of the atoms in your hand and those of the atoms of a wall mutually repel, so you can't push through.

OnlyParentsAreReal · 17/10/2017 16:21

Technically we can never even touch anything let alone go through it

lemonsandlimes123 · 17/10/2017 16:24

speverend - you see that all sounds very plausible but if hand and walls are both made of atoms how are they so different! IT MAKES NO SENSE! Grin Grin

OP posts:
SpeverendRooner · 17/10/2017 16:28

They're different combinations of atoms. That's all there is to it, really. The complexity in life all comes from how the different combinations of atoms work.

Gravitational waves aren't made of atoms, though, those are different. Smile

lemonsandlimes123 · 17/10/2017 16:32

speverend - now you're just teasing! It must be great to be able to consider these issues without getting a headache! Do some of you knowledgeable types on this thread work in this field or do you just have highbrow hobby interests?

OP posts:
Vitalogy · 17/10/2017 16:38

These past few months I've looked into all sorts of things, including atoms, really blew my mind when I found out there is no actual matter. Upset me to tell you the truth but as I believe in the source I've been able to get my head around it.

SallyOMalley · 17/10/2017 16:38

Great article in the Guardian there. Great thread too - I love this mindblowing stuff.

Would love to know which ring tone signalled the neutron star collision on the scientist's phone. Please let it be Bowie's 'Starman' .. Smile

OnlyParentsAreReal · 17/10/2017 16:39

speverend but then again that's just how we perceive it. There could very well be Nth dimensional factors at play

icedtea · 17/10/2017 16:45

There's also a tiny part of me that wonders if they are just making it all up!

I agree. They have never explained the evidence for any of this. They just pull things out of the air and surround it with pseudo science.

lemonsandlimes123 · 17/10/2017 16:46

iced tea - i think the doubting part of you is bigger than the doubting part of me!
