Am looking at going to Europe with two children alone - DH coming a few days later. The trip there involves 2 hours on first train, then a change of stations (about10 min walk away) with 1.5 hours to change trains, the another 2 hour train journey arriving at 10pm. Am I mad to attempt this with a 2 year old and 7 year old solo. With luggage and pram. Or should I pay extra in order to be able to break up the journey and stay a night to break it up? what would you do?

Piece of cake, go for it.

The 1.5 hr connection will be the worst part. The rest will just be a normally stressy grouchy travel day.

But as it's only a couple of hours on each train leg you'll be grand.

Sounds doable to me. The only bit that doesn't sound good is you with two children, a buggy plus luggage. Could your DH bring all the luggage so you just have a small backpack and buggy? Your 7 year old could have two days of clothes in her own rucksack maybe?

Life is for living. Smile

Is there another train after the one you are scheduled to get? If so, and there is a delay on the first train, dont' you just get put onto the later train??

Exactly. Your 2 y/o is the issue here. Toddlers are hard work and unpredictable. In a foreign country and busy place, with stress inducing walks between stations and connecting trains to catch, I would like to make things as easy for myself as possible. As soon as your youngest is older travelling will absolutely be easier but right now.. it simply isnt and anyone who claims that it is.. is either v lucky or lying. you can’t expect two year olds to sit still and watch a tablet for 2 hours.. they just don’t have the concentration span. They’ll b so easily over tired and bored and hungry and in need of the toilet and flighty.
