The other half has decide to paint his 'man cave' RED, we have decided that he can have the final say on the room colour so the red is staying but can anyone suggest a way of making it less... well... red. So less of a AIBU and more of a help me with the redness! Or if anyone has a red success story then please share images/stories to get me through.

Please.

My parents sitting room is dulux "roasted red" and I was supremely dubious but it looks super. I spent ages trying to dissuade them but to no avail. They definitely made the right decision. White ceilings, skirting boards, doors and window sills, and then "gold" fabric with dark patterns, oak floor, leather armchair. It's a fantastic room - I think if you embrace it as a cosy room to be dressed up with other autumnal colours (like browns etc) with natural materials it can work well - will obviously be house dependent though.

Get yourself a ladycave

Sounds like that's exactly what he's creating!Grin

Red can work. As 8Etymology* says, it will need lots of brown and wood tones to make it work. Think paisley, leather, Turkish carpet.

red is the 'hot' colour for decoration and clothes this season. He's bang on trend at the very least.

Grey and red? Please no, I’m having flash backs to the eighties.

Deep reds and even orange reds are great with Chinese-style decorations. Or Thai, Vietnamese etc. You know how many people buy a beautiful painting or similar on holidays or a sculpture and then when they get it home it looks tepid? That's why. Those lovely bright colours need a strong background so they pop.
Have a look at this kind of thing. Heaps of ideas for this on Pinterest. I think it looks exotic and expensive and wonderful. Red can be done beautifully!

Judas. You & me both, but I think half of MN were babies at the time 😳😖

Is it even remotely possible that he chose red in order to discourage you from invading his space? That's what I would do, if I had a lady cave: keep the family out, using any means at my disposal. Grin

Our nearest IKEA has red themed rooms on display at the moment, usually red, racing green, and black.

safariboot · 16/10/2017 00:24

Yeah, looking at the pics, I think the right red will work well if he's going for a Victorian-style study. Quality traditional furniture, and gadgets absent or discreet.

If on the other hand he wants a room with a massive TV, games consoles, beanbags, and so on, then IMHO red walls are just going to look gaudy and tacky.

Then again, if it's going to be 'his' room for years to come, does it matter?

PerspicaciaTick · 16/10/2017 00:34

A room like this one would look great with a stag's head.

Dark red is a great colour for a cinema room, widely used in actual cinemas in the past as it absorbs light. It will be fab properly done.

Was he a teen in the 80s?
