The other half has decide to paint his 'man cave' RED, we have decided that he can have the final say on the room colour so the red is staying but can anyone suggest a way of making it less... well... red. So less of a AIBU and more of a help me with the redness! Or if anyone has a red success story then please share images/stories to get me through.

Please.

House not home use!

sashh · 15/10/2017 22:40

My bedroom is red, you might be surprised. All four walls, with red curtains.

My duvet covers are red, so are the pillows and cushions.

Blackcatonthesofa · 15/10/2017 22:40

Close the door and leave him to it. Get yourself a ladycave.

LellyMcKelly · 15/10/2017 22:41

Ooh, that is lovely, bridgetreilly. If he's not going for that look can I suggest you buy him some red tartan carpet, a stag's head for the wall, and leave him to his hunting lodge dreams. He'll be begging for Farrow and Ball's 'Neutered Squirrel' in no time. 😁

PenelopeStoppit · 15/10/2017 22:42

If he has decided on red it seems only fair you pick the shade of red. Get on Pinterest- deep matt red with a white ceiling, white paintwork and soft grey furnishings looks good. Avoid black and leather and shiny fabrics www.hearthomemag.co.uk/blog/create-a-welcoming-home-for-overnight-guests

Or really ruin it for him and clash it with hot pink- google Mathew William son's house. I think it looks great.

Pastacube · 15/10/2017 22:43

i had a red living room in my old flat it was ace. have to accent with light furnishings eg brass base lamp with light shade and light pine furniture, or what's what we did. it was lush

BikeRunSki · 15/10/2017 22:44

We had a ruby red sitting room in our old house. Off white above the dado to lessen the impact.

Garlicansapphire · 15/10/2017 22:44

I had a dark red bedroom at one point - but it was definitely more Victorian library than pillar box. You need a lot of white paintwork to break it up, lighter curtains and carpets.

It was okay - I wouldn't do it again.... Womb like.

GwenStaceyRocks · 15/10/2017 22:45

A deep red or Victorian red could work. My parents had a dark red bathroom and it was stunning. I have friends who had a dark red sitting room. The colours of the furniture helped to break up the red and it was cosy and striking at the same time.

Embrace the red. Deep dark red can look elegant and sophisticated. See these screen grabs from farrow and ball website

Ugh! It'll be like sitting inside a kidney.

Lanaorana2 · 15/10/2017 22:48

Lots and lots of prints, clustered - as it's known - will break up the intensity.

Absolutely not to red accents. Don't work unless they're chairs.

AnnieAnoniMouse · 15/10/2017 22:50

If it's his room & he wants to paint it red, why is that any of your concern? Surely that's part of the point in having a room that's yours?

TripTrapTripTrapOverTheBridge · 15/10/2017 22:55

Surely a 'man cave' is a room for him, not you (unless you are also male of course, which would render the need for a man cave stupid), so it's 100% up to him? You won't be the one in there!

Aside from that, many years ago I had a red living room with a red carpet to boot. It looked amazing at Christmas!

oldbirdy · 15/10/2017 22:58

Urgh. The last house we bought had a red room. Wine coloured carpet and curtains and tomatoey red walls. We called it the womb room. It was horrific. It went immediately.

Maybe a single feature wall?

Fanciedachange17 · 15/10/2017 23:06

His room, his choice, why the "we have decided..."? Makes you sound controlling and patronising as if men can't be allowed to have a say in decorations as they will get it so wrong. Titter. Equality swings both ways.

Slimthistime · 15/10/2017 23:07

But it's his room?

WitchBitchHarpyTerfThatsMe · 15/10/2017 23:10

Uterus envy is what I diagnose!

Starflame · 15/10/2017 23:12

Well it's his mancave so he can do whatever he wants with it. Let him breathe ffsConfused

bellsandwhistles89 · 15/10/2017 23:14

@ReggaetonLente if he is then the red may be the least of my problems...

Thank you for the ideas, I will see what he says. He likes red and unfortunately I am a grey lady so red for me is a step to the dark side - I have tried the grey with red accents but he is set on red and just red.

Its a room in the house and when I say 'man cave' it will mainly be his to do with what he pleases but will also be used for film watching and hanging with friends.

Dark red may be a compromise... its not got much light but for films that shouldnt be awful.

@LellyMcKelly I bought a stags head but its beautifully silver dont think it would fit in very well.

I am a boring human being and like grey!

Dark red is great but needs careful thought with both furniture and lighting.
