Did this person invite themselves to a wedding?

So, person A received an invite to a family wedding. Person A mentions this to person B who claims to not have been invited. Another family member has also been invited, let's call them C. A week later, B assumes that a mistake has been made so uses the code on C's invite to RSVP on their wedding website.

Was B being a cheeky fucker?

That's why people send out 'save the date' cards. According to this wedding etiquette website 6 to 8 weeks in advance is correct.

Shall I just take my kids anyway to add to the drama?

Yes, but don't tell them you're taking them. That's how you do drama.

(because a high chair is not a chair and it doesn't take up any room - but that's a whole other thread)

Yes, you could also invite some random mumnetters who fancy a day out. Grin

It's definitely more the norm now to have a 'proper' invite about 3-4 months in advance. Wedding etiquette can be horribly outdated, and most people I know would need a bit more notice (let alone the feckless people who would get an invite at the 6 week mark and not reply for a month...). People live further away from each other nowadays. My friend sent out STDs a year before, then her invites in the 6-8 week limit. She ended up inviting extra partners because several people had forgotten to 'save the date' (or not noticed said date was a Friday) and couldn't come.

I work in events, and we definitely need to get most of our bookings done before the 3 month mark, or diaries become filled.

Back to the OP - yup, major CF.
