At a very base level she was heavily pregnant and backpacking through taliban occupied Afghanistan?

It is definitely one of the most bizarre stories I have seen in a long time. His own father has publically questioned why they were in Afghanistan in the first place considering she was heavily pregnant at the time.

At best, they are fantasists. At worst, they are involved in something very dangerous.

ILiveUnderYourBed · 14/10/2017 13:26

Yeah total bullshit.

Oh, I didn't know he was Canadian.

www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-41620131

He says "The stupidity and the evil of the Haqqani network in the kidnapping of a pilgrim... was eclipsed only by the stupidity and evil of authorising the murder of my infant daughter".

A pilgrim "trying to deliver aid to villagers in a part of the Taliban-controlled region "where no NGO, no aid worker, and no government" had been able to reach...

Bratsandtwats · 14/10/2017 13:28

Gabsalot I think the child who was killed was a girl. The boys survived. Coincidence? Maybe.....

Betsyboo87 · 14/10/2017 13:30

If I were in such dire straights I don't think I'd be adding to my family.

^Agreed.

I’ve just read this story and came straight on here to find the thread. It’s just odd - so much doesn’t add up and there is definitely more to this story.

BradleyPooper · 14/10/2017 13:31

They were backpacking ... what kind of aid were they delivering in backpacks???

SweetieBaby · 14/10/2017 13:35

I also thought it was very strange that they would have 2 more children whilst in captivity, unless they were forced to I suppose.

Me and DH both looked at eachother to say WTF when this was mentioned on the news. Three children in captivity with the Taliban??

LeavesinAutumn · 14/10/2017 13:39

Yes very odd. Although some people do not holiday to dangers places, a thread on this subject recently revealed some people were actually going on hols to Afghanistan Confused as for pilgrim, yes perhaps pilgrim to isis?

VivaLeBeaver · 14/10/2017 13:42

I also wondered if she was originally from an Amish community? She's from Pennsylvania and in a pre capture photo was wearing a headscarf. I wondered if she escaped one lifestyle where she was told what to do to then be brainwashed by someone else.

GabsAlot · 14/10/2017 13:42

hmm brats interesting

LizzyButton · 14/10/2017 13:44

The ones who matter in this case are 1st the three living children of Caitlan Coleman, 2nd Caitlan Coleman who will probably need a lot of help and support, 3rd the families of Coleman and Boyle who have been through a lot of stress and probably react out of love rather than any considered appraisal of the situation.

Joshua Boyle needs to be supported, treated if necessary and interviewed. He might make it to number 4 on my list.

OnionKnight · 14/10/2017 13:46

The story doesn't make sense.

If any of it is true then the blokes an idiot.

HadronCollider · 14/10/2017 13:49

The two more children thing I can understand if I'm honest. Solace in captivity and all that. I once watched a documentary about a woman whose mum conceived her in a concentration camp in Germany. Her father and mother were married and segregated into different 'bunkers'? but met up to get it on. Only source of comfort they still had.

But his travelling there is well dodgy. Plus the way he speaks about the 'stupidity' of his captors. Stupid is not the first descriptive term I'd reach for if you killed my infant child. To me stupid is something relatively minor. Not murder. No it sounds like stupid in not realising we were there to support the cause and treating us as infidels.

ladyme · 14/10/2017 13:49

It doesn’t really make much sense to me as yet, but in terms of having babies in captivity - I can’t imagine they could just pop to boots for a pack of johnnies! I would defo want sex in that situation, what else are you going to do with your time?

LeavesinAutumn · 14/10/2017 13:52

Yy hadron

GabsAlot · 14/10/2017 13:52

dunno wouldnt really turn me on being a prisoner-suppose could happen though

OliviaStabler · 14/10/2017 13:53

Very odd. Arse covering comes to mind.

Lloyd45 · 14/10/2017 13:58

The interview is so odd, his word and his body language were weird www.theguardian.com/world/2017/oct/14/canadian-held-in-afghanistan-says-child-was-killed-and-wife-raped-in-captivity

MipMipMip · 14/10/2017 14:04

I would have thought any children would be taken off them to be raised as Muslims, rather than killed. I thought the Taliban was big on converting people so they wouldn't be massively bothered at the children not being born Muslim, provided they became Muslim.

Mummyoflittledragon · 14/10/2017 14:06

The reasons I saw/read for not getting on the plane was that he refused to get on a plane to the us was because he was afraid of being interrogated. He also said his son wanted to go on a direct flight to the us and the one offered was an internal flight to then be flown to the us. So he refused for his son.

Very suspicious. Deffo can't get his story straight.

And on Tv he said his wife was raped I got the impression it wasn't a one off..

MipMipMip · 14/10/2017 14:09

How do you fit five people (3 of them children) into the trunk of a car?Hmm

Bratsandtwats · 14/10/2017 14:09

Lloyd45 Agreed. Body language experts would have a field day with him. I'm sure he and his family are being watched and analysed by several different agencies.
