Took my horrible dog for a walk to the beach yesterday.

He loves the beach, it's his best thing ever so thought I'd treat him.

How does the little fucker thank me? By finding, and rolling in a rotting seal.

He absolutely stinks.

He's been in the bath several times, we've got fox poo shampoo which hasn't really helped. I tried tomato ketchup. A friend gave me some shampoo she uses on her horses and swears it gets rid of vile smells but he still bloody stinks.

It's making me gag and we've got some friends over tonight

For skunk smell we use tomato juice and mouthwash, listerene. It does work well on skunk smell, doesnt remove it totally but then nothing does.

Scabbersley · 15/10/2017 15:48

Was just coming on to say listerine! It kills most bacteria (the original brown one)

fairydustandpixies · 15/10/2017 16:42

Ha! I feel your pain! This is my dog after a 'walk' this morning. A fellow dog walker said how unusual his markings were - I explained it was mud!! Several baths later and he still stinks of stagnant pond...bleurgh!!

Comfort and hot water is good to get rid of smells although not sure if putting on his skin would irritate it?

ShitOrBust · 15/10/2017 17:06

I knew it was a spaniel!
i know one of them and he's a deviant and is completely mental.
if he was a human male, he'd be in prison for life.
so cute though...

Spudlet · 15/10/2017 19:33

I know it!

Mine is a spaniel too. They are... special.

He's spent a good part of today hoovering up sheep shit, but only because he couldn't get to any oilseed rape Hmm

JaneEyre70 · 15/10/2017 19:51

I just knew it would be a spaniel. We narrowly avoided a rotting dolphin carcass last month in Devon [boak]. Mine is partial to fox poo, badger poo, other dog poo, but his no 1 favourite smell is stagnant pond. I've driven home on more than one occasion from a walk with my head hanging out the window yelling "bad dog" the whole way while he is all blissed out and rubbing the smell over the car.

nooka · 15/10/2017 19:52

Our dog got skunked the other day and we were recommended to use a mix of water, vinegar, bicarb and washing up liquid (and not tomato ketchup). It did lower the smell level until we were able to get special skunk removal stuff. A month later and he's still a bit wiffy. It's an incredibly odd, nasty smell. I much prefer dead salmon, his personal perfume choice.

Fluffyears · 15/10/2017 19:53

Ooft my last dog loved to roll in cow shit. She had a long double coat as well (retriever/collie mix). I used to have to walk her home whilst she was greeny Brown, sludgy and stinking. Apparently it’s an instinct to disguise their scent from prey/predators...i’d Rub his fur the ‘wrong’ way and stick bicarbonate on him. Then brush his fur the right way, it’ll help take off any loose fur which stinks.

Ellybellyboo · 15/10/2017 20:09

Mine is quite partial to a stagnant pond too.

His second favourite walk is along a tidal river. If I time it wrong and the tide is out, it's just thick, black, stinky mud. He rolls in that too. Flat on his back, rolling around like an idiot. He knows he safe in there too as I won't go in it to fish him out

We seem to have cracked the seal stink though. Definitely can't smell it today - my car is another story. I've been to have it valeted this afternoon and it still stinks.

Spaniel owner here too! Best thing I ever bought was a Dri-bag for my car. It's basically an (overpriced) towel stitched into a bag with a drawstring neck into which you pop your mutt and their accompanying wet stink thus protecting your car from all their vileness. Plus if they're wet it manages to miraculously dry their fur on the journey home with the heat of their body and means you can shake out the sand/mud and keep your car clean. Pure genius.

Ellybellyboo · 15/10/2017 20:58

We've got something similar but it has a zip all across the top so he just stands on it and it unzips and he gets straight out.

I'll have a look for a drawstring one

Thanks for the link to 'Dogs in Elk' Spider! I read it years ago and could never find it again. Have hopefully saved it now. I used to have Patterdales Ellybellyboo which is why I wondered if yours was a terrier. They used to come home in some right old states. Disgusting little critters!

user1492970817 · 15/10/2017 22:16

Oh feel your pain,I have a spaniel as well.Don't the buggers love all things wet or stinky,I am always on the alert for horse poo and fox poo on our walks. If I don't manage to distract him in time, especially the horse dung as well as roll he will eat it.Dirty swine, but adorable bugger so I forgive him.

starsorwater · 16/10/2017 00:11

Mine rolled in a dead mole long dead, I heard it pop, the smell was so strong you could taste it more than smell it. Washed her in everything including tea tree and black coffee (which helped).

Ropsleybunny · 16/10/2017 07:23

My dog is a roller, luckily never in a dead seal. We once saw a man walking on the beach with his dog. The man had his head buried in his phone whilst his DDog happily rolled in the dead seal we'd just avoided. 😹

smallmercys · 16/10/2017 09:03

It's just instinct to do this, in the past it helped the species survive.

All part of the joys of dog ownership and he/she will always, always have your back.

snackerextraordinaire · 16/10/2017 10:31

I have found my people. My bloody terrier loves not only rolling in animal poo and dead sheep carcasses but also eating any kind of poo he can find. Last week he was going to be stripped and right before hand he rolled in fox poo. I was furious as we had been waiting for 3 months for this appointment. I put a load of fairy antibacterial washing up liquid on it neat, rubbed it in and then washed him about three times. The lady who was stripping him mentioned he was a little damp. If only she knew.

spiderlight · 16/10/2017 10:57

Spaniels are the best though! Miss my girl so so much.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 16/10/2017 11:10

Mine have rolled in rotting seal - I used Hibiscrub to tone down the stench! Then I clipped their hair as well.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 16/10/2017 11:21

Link is BRILLIANT! Thank you Spider

Pagen · 16/10/2017 13:16

I have a terrier who stinks to high heaven, turns out on top of the usual rolling in anything stinky she also has blocked anal glands and bad breath so always worth running them past the vet for advise, I don't recommend you stay in the room when they empty your dogs anal glands though.....

BaconAndBees · 16/10/2017 16:34

*Leave at dog rescue.

Adopt the next day.. What a fantastic idea what in*. I wish I'd have thought of that when Bacon Dog rolled over in rolling seagull!
