AIBU?

To be shocked at the rising price of food?

I do a fair bit of my grocery shopping at Aldi and Lidl, but dip into all the big stores very regularly as well for certain items I like when they are on offer to stock up, and also for yellow sticker bargains.

My bill has gone up by about a quarter in the last six months or so for the same products. Aldi and Lidl don't seem all that cheap anymore - although to be fair I don't know what doing my 'main' shop at Sainsbury's or Tesco or Morrisons.

I'm a little shocked at just how quickly the prices are going up. I knew they were going to rise but kind of expected a much more gradual increase. Silly me.

Has anyone else felt like this? Or does anyone else feel alarmed at not knowing when prices will level out and slow down?

Of course it's due to the movement of the pound.

But god forbid the people who voted for Brexit should take responsibility for the outcome.

Just wait until Boris is voted in, he's a capitalist to the worst extent. He's looking for very low corporation tax and a massive reduction in workers rights and benefits to encourage large corporations to invest in the uk.

Any and every pension fund needs the companies it has money invested in to make a profit, or there won't be anything to pay you when you retire.

Massive companies with a huge number of shareholders, chips? I'm not a huge fan of the way some of the big supermarkets work, but they're not charities and it's unclear to me why people expect them to act as such. If you are concerned about the practices of supermarkets then buy from the more ethical ones like the co-op and Waitrose. I would if I could afford to!

I noticed the other day that a box of painkillers has gone up by over £1 in Tesco. Meat has also gone up there. I'm going back to Aldi for meat

Well, I for one am glad the prices of dairy and meat have gone up. Perhaps it'll encourage people to look for alternatives.

I think milk should be more expensive too.

Now what I'm really angry about is the price of my favourite Cif Bathroom spray. Gone from £1 in Asda to £3.50 Angry

Noticed the big jump in butter prices. The bread we normally buy was 65p last year, now £1. Also seeing flour creeping up in price too.
Usually buy 3 packs of meat for £10 at asda - the weight of the packets have decreased I think.
Food in this country does seem cheap compared to other places though - but not for too much longer.

All you Lurpak buyers, it's on offer on ocado at present. 2 for £3.40. I personally buy British Country Life as it's usually cheaper.

AndNone aren't basic painkillers usually something silly like £40?!

I'm Shock at them being £1 or more

JayneEyre are you that ignorant of company reporting? Stating a single year doesn't give context, nor does failing to mention the financial year the accounts relate to.......

Pension funds are the biggest investors and shareholders. The individuals you read about as wealthy fat cats are minnows. Honestly, they don't move the markets but Unison's pension fund changing from Tesco to Sainsbury's is a big deal.

I am noticing the increase. It's never 3%

I bought a tin of beans in the coop (I know it's not the cheapest shop) 75p. 75p I tell you.

If something isn't standard, then the price will be much higher. For example, when I asked for rectal paracetamol tablets in the UK, Boots wanted £24 for a small packet that would have cost £3.50 in France.

Butter we buy which ever brand is on offer of spreadable. Always one of offer at £1. Milk in Tesco/qd is always £1 for 4pts. We don't really have space for chickens so we took on an allotment. £50 a year and we can grow some stuff and keep chickens plus the holders are always swapping fruit/veg with each other if they have too much of one type.

It is easier to stuff a paracetamol up a sleeping baby's bottom than to wake them and get them off again, honestly, especially when poorly. Wearing my non perv hat Grin.

I've noticed increases in butter, cheese, wine, smoked salmon, prawns, cherries, meat.

lol, Teal, thank god I only buy two of those. Grin

Seriously, 20-30% across the board, and yy to smaller packets. Brexit definitely, and also stealth increases under cover of the darkness of Brexit. And not just food - household products like washing up liquid etc are also going through the roof.

I am just so glad I can cook properly from a pretty sparse store cupboard, that we have a little bit of space where we can grow veg, and that I live in a farming area where we can buy reasonably priced produce of known provenance. Brexit is going to be the worst single event of my lifetime.

Was so horrified by the price of butter I walked out without any Shock
