To be shocked at the rising price of food?

I do a fair bit of my grocery shopping at Aldi and Lidl, but dip into all the big stores very regularly as well for certain items I like when they are on offer to stock up, and also for yellow sticker bargains.

My bill has gone up by about a quarter in the last six months or so for the same products. Aldi and Lidl don't seem all that cheap anymore - although to be fair I don't know what doing my 'main' shop at Sainsbury's or Tesco or Morrisons.

I'm a little shocked at just how quickly the prices are going up. I knew they were going to rise but kind of expected a much more gradual increase. Silly me.

Has anyone else felt like this? Or does anyone else feel alarmed at not knowing when prices will level out and slow down?

We are talking about taking our old chest freezer out of storage and completely gutting our garage cupboards to fit it in, in order to start stocking up on the likes of meat and essentials when we spot bargains.

Our dry dog food has gone up by a fiver a month too. There is a special offer at the moment so we've bought £100 worth to stash.

I am a real nerd when it comes to food shopping. I keep a really close eye on my food budget as we don't have a lot of money to spare and overall I haven't noticed anything going up, however the price of big brand stuff does fluctuate a lot and I think that the big supermarkets have changed the way they price things now. Some weeks you can pay double for the same product and it woud be very easy to not notice if you were doing your shop in a hurry. You have to buy when the price is low and leave it on the shelf when it's high. It is amazing how much the price of a tin of Heinz Baked Beans varies from one week to the next! And Muller Yoghurts are never the same price. In days gone by I would just throw my usual stuff into the trolly without thinking - nowadays I could tell you how much each item costs. Most brand products are on offer at some time or other so I tend to stock up when the price is low Big stores rely on you throwing the same regular stuff in your trolley every week without you noticing they've put the price up.

We shop at Aldi mostly nowadays and Tesco or Sainsburys for the brands that we can't do without.

When we first started shopping in aldi the receipt for a £75 shop was ridiculously long and the trolley was overflowing. Now a £75 hardly fills the trolley and the receipt is much shorter. I've noticed the rapid rise in the price of butter too.

anyone who thinks that the UK isnt going to impose the same tariff on tea they currently have is delusional

the likelyhood is that the UK keeps most of the current deals it has, it's not going to start losing money on a deal that's already set in stone.

Unless the countries providing tea, decide to use varying blackmail techniques.

most of our import/export is with the EU, I just don't understand why anyone would think it was a good idea to screw with that trade situation for less immigrants and cheap bloody tea.

Wait until we crash out of the EU on WTO terms and there are no imported food products until borders are sorted It'll be empty shelves as far as the eye can see .

Lurpak is for Christmas only I buy I can't believe it's not butter which is not very nice but it does the job and it's been £1 for yonks. If they that put the price of that up then I will start worrying

I've noticed increases in butter, cheese, wine, smoked salmon, prawns, cherries, meat.

Just yesterday, I bought butter in the local Spar. It cost £2.42....🤤

Yep, Morrisons is creeping up here and there - definitely with you on the butter , having gone from Lurpak , to own brand , to savers brand , and the savers brand now costs what the own brand did two months ago !

Bread's gradually creeping up , and pasta , and rice as well , in fact all our staples seem to have had ten or twenty pence added on . And then petrol's going back up, so it costs more to get there as well .

Don't know what you're all moaning about. Personally I find all that extra SOVEREIGNTY is all the sustenance I need!

Honestly I haven't noticed. I still buy milk for £1 butter for £1. Tesco value bread is still 50p and branded is £1. Coke is still always on offer at 2 for £2.50. The butchers prices have stayed the same and the local farmer in the layby hasn't put his prices up on his veg. Shower gels/body washes are still £1 a bottle.

No idea on eggs as we have chickens. Dog food hasn't gone up for us. My electric and gas bill have also dropped by £20 each compared to 6months ago.

Wine we home brew at £25 for over 30 bottles.

I'm finding I'm baking a lot less due to the price of butter and eggs, premade stuff is much cheaper now. I'm lucky enough to be able to store plenty of food so I fill my freezers with bargains which helps, I dread to think how much I'd have to spend if I was working with little storage and only an ice box in the fridge.

Someone above mentioned butter, it's the one price change I noticed this week. You used to be able to buy a block of supermarket own brand butter for about £1 and now it's 40p more (at least in Morrisons).

Where do you find decent butter for £1? I can’t find it cheaper than £1.40.
Unfortunately we don’t have a local farmer selling veg in a lay-by. Or space to keep chickens. Or even a local butcher (closest is 9 miles away). So we’re at the mercy of supermarkets.
