To think that nobody here has a higher car insurance premium than I do?

£2600!

Who can beat that?

No cheating by telling me about your young son's or daughters's policies.

I'm early 30s.
Drive a 1.3l Ford Ka.
Have no claims or convictions

Buuuut

I'm a relatively new driver with 0 NCD years.
I have no other drivers on my policy that might lower the risk/premium.
I live in a diabolical post code - high crime, high car thefts, high vandalism
My car is parked on a main road

I'm going to be moving soon to a gorgeous, quiet, low crime area for a new job and cannot wait to see the effect a change of postcode will have on my premium.

That, combined with my upcoming 1 year NCD, will hopefully bring it down by at least a grand, right?

The current insurance is 4 times more expensive than the car was!

I'm going to try getting a new quote based on some potential homes spotted on Rightmove and see the result. My renewal is only 4 months away - can't come quick enough!

Could you perhaps increase the voluntary excess, OP? That sometimes helps to reduce premiums.

QueuetoaskaQ · 14/10/2017 22:56

The voluntary excess is already as high as I'd be able to afford in the event of a claim (£350).

I've just submitted a request to add my mum on as a secondary driver (quote only). They'll get back to me with a quote in 48hrs. Looking forward to seeing if that decreases the monthly instalments at all.

I am a member of a professional body but there's nothing at all regarding insurance discounts as far as I'm aware.

The job I'm moving for will require me to increase my mileage significantly and upgrade commuting to business use (as I'll be visiting people for work in their homes). So perhaps these changes will negate any potential premium decrease generated by the change of address.

I just want my 1 year NCD! That should certainly bring it down a notch.

Ouch.

Late 20s, new driver, 1.5l 'warm hatch', one of the worst postcodes in the country, and I paid £800 less. Even in my second year after I'd had an at-fault accident and a no-claim incident in my first year.

In my favour I drive under 3000 miles a year, my car's only worth about 2 grand, I have a normal-risk job, and I paid in a lump sum. And I got quotes from 3 or 4 price comparison sites and several insurers directly.

Moving house should be a big saving for you OP. Location is huge in car insurance premiums. You'll probably find the cheaper car insurance compensates you for the moving expenses within a couple of years.

If you were unemployed before, getting a job will help too. Being out of work typically adds 30% to your insurance and can add as much as 60%.

I paid £400 per year on the outskirts of a city centre for my ancient car (6 years no claims) relocated to worse area miles away (town not city, same car) and my premium went up to £900 per year at 7 years no claims. I nearly cried. I've moved again since and it's back to £400.

Twofurrycats · 14/10/2017 23:54

Car insurance premiums are some sort of black art. Mine went up when I changed jobs, same car, same address, same me! Especially annoying as I changed from driving into a city during rush hour, parking car in an awful postcode to mainly working from home and mainly dodging driving in rush hour.

Grilledaubergines · 14/10/2017 23:59

Wow some of these premiums are ridiculous. I pay £180 on a year old qashqai.

Louise2092 · 15/10/2017 12:50

I love this thread! I've been fuming for days over car insurance and finally have an outlet.
My insurance company had the cheek to increase my premium for this year after someone reversed into me in a car park when I done all the leg work and contacted the guys insurance company and they did nothing, now even contact his insurance. I figured with my extra year no claims discount that my monthly payment would be less but nope, it went up by £10 a year.

Cut to this week, I've recently moved in with my fiance and changed my address with insurance online. I then received an email stating my monthly payment is going up to £124 pm from £77.20 as of next payment!

All because I moved 2 streets away... I was told its due to the postcode but my postcode area has stayed the same so going to fight this increase.

With 2 years no claims, being the main driver but having my dad as a second driver... my insurance is about £1100 a year so you have my sympathies OP.

QueuetoaskaQ · 16/10/2017 11:08

Oh well - insurers got back to me with a quote. To add my mum on, my premium would go up by £200! So I'm actually cheaper being the sole driver. My mum has 15 years no claims, no convictions - nothing at all that would make her 'risky'.

Lucky it was only 10 pounds Louise, I was in a no fault accident in another car so no claim and the fact I'd been in an accident added 150 to my premium come renewal

heron98 · 16/10/2017 11:26

That's high! We got quoted £1500 to put DP on our car insurance when he first passed. It's a 1L 15 year old Polo that wouldn't even fetch £500. Madness.

safariboot · 16/10/2017 16:14

QueuetoaskaQ I wonder a new driver asking for a more experienced driver to be added on has become itself a sign of increased risk? People think it gets you cheaper insurance, so people paying the most are more likely to do it. In the same way that third-party-only cover is now more expensive than fully-comp for new and young drivers.

heron98 thing is even if your car is cheap, you can hit something much more expensive or cause multiple people injury.

Also, small hatchback, I'm guessing experienced driver you as main driver and new driver DP as named driver, if the underwriters ignore that you already owned the car then that looks like fronting and that could explain the very high premium.

specialsubject · 16/10/2017 16:19

Unusual that a second driver didn't help but there you go.

The car may be high risk as that is a classic new driver car and they hit more things. The war zone postcode is how it is.

Are you paying monthly? Interest charge will be high.

LemonysSnicket · 16/10/2017 16:25

Wow I’m 22 with a claim and mines lower than that ... Jesus Flowers
