To think that nobody here has a higher car insurance premium than I do?

£2600!

Who can beat that?

No cheating by telling me about your young son's or daughters's policies.

I'm early 30s.
Drive a 1.3l Ford Ka.
Have no claims or convictions

Buuuut

I'm a relatively new driver with 0 NCD years.
I have no other drivers on my policy that might lower the risk/premium.
I live in a diabolical post code - high crime, high car thefts, high vandalism
My car is parked on a main road

I'm going to be moving soon to a gorgeous, quiet, low crime area for a new job and cannot wait to see the effect a change of postcode will have on my premium.

That, combined with my upcoming 1 year NCD, will hopefully bring it down by at least a grand, right?

The current insurance is 4 times more expensive than the car was!

I'm going to try getting a new quote based on some potential homes spotted on Rightmove and see the result. My renewal is only 4 months away - can't come quick enough!

Wow Just used your details and my post code with teacher as the job came out at 840 quid - your post code must be terrible.

LadyRosalieBeauchamp · 14/10/2017 14:13

One of the things which has resulted in ridiculous premiums is the attitude of ambulance chaser claim companies...

BarbaraOcumbungles · 14/10/2017 14:15

I’m more shocked that anyone still drives 3l cars? What sort of fuel economy to you get out of that beast?

showergel1 · 14/10/2017 14:15

Ours just under that. Medically restricted licence. Not a great area either.
Eye watering but so worth it. Hated being without a car.

Stiddleficks · 14/10/2017 14:16

Wow I’ll stop complaining about my £400 policy now!!
I did find mine reduced slightly when I put my dh on as a learner though, so worth a try in adding someone else.

TheKidsAreTakingMySanity · 14/10/2017 14:17

Holly moley! I paid £191 this year. Fully comp. 08 Vauxhall Zafira with 13+ NCB.

My first car 14 years ago was a 1958 Landrover and insurance was (fully comp) about £200!!! That's 0 NCB.

I've never paid more that £200 - £300 a year. Good area and cheap bangers for a few of those years.

lettuceWrap · 14/10/2017 14:33

We have 3 DC who are young drivers (all under the age of 24), and have spent a lot of time looking at insurance variables.

I think the biggest mistake new/young drivers make is going out and buying a car without looking at the cost to insure. Insurance group makes a huge difference to premiums and some bog standard small cars have surprisingly high insurance groups - the 2.1 litre corsa several pp have mentioned, a small, standard car many would think perfect for a new driver- it's insurance group 8!

We realised it would be cheaper to buy our DC a car in insurance group 1, 2 or 3 than to insure them to drive either of our family saloon cars.

DC's got Toyota Aygo and fiat Panda - both 4 seaters which also reduces premiums iirc. 19yo DC first years premium was under £800, and even less than that when we added me and DH on (we are on as named, but not main driver).

everydayanewday · 14/10/2017 14:58

It used to drive me mad, back before DH and I got married he said he was considering learning to drive so I said at renewal that I’d ask what it would cost to add him on my insurance and he said he’d pay the difference. It brought my insurance down by a third having a man who literally could not drive on the insurance.

He’s been on my insurance ever since, although he was really slow about sorting out learning to drive, so for 8 years I got quotes both with or without. Every single time it was cheaper with the man who literally did not know how to make a car move forwards.

Oddly, it went up when he passed his test!

Sillysausage123 · 14/10/2017 15:08

Here's an interesting thing that affects premiums,
When it asks you your marital status and if you put divorced rather than single it increases your premium.
I do wonder whether I could put single instead of divorced as technically I am single and it's bizarre it increases if you put yourself as divorced as if that makes you more reckless driving!

JustMumNowNotMe · 14/10/2017 15:08

agent be prepared for it to go up once you pass and hold a full licence. I expected ours to go right down but in fact imt increased significantly. I am now coming up to 2 years driving so 2 years NCD now, and its £300 pa fully comp so much better Smile

HolidayHelpPlease · 14/10/2017 15:09

Passed my test at 21... £3000! For a 1l 2012 Citroen C1... thank Christ for car finance!

YerAWizardHarry · 14/10/2017 15:12

I'm 24 no no claims, live in a high rate area, drive a 1.2 punto and mines is only £750!

Brittbugs80 · 14/10/2017 15:17

Mine is £320 a year with business cover too (use it for work as well as leisure) and I drive a 17 plate 208.

My very first insurance cover was £989 for a 206 that was six months old in 2001 when I was 21.

I've got about 15 years of no claims but Insurance companies only take a maximum of 4/5 anyway.

GlitterNails · 14/10/2017 18:20

Got my first car in my early 20s. Premium around £300. Next years offer - £9999!

I phoned to say I think there was a mistake.

Nope.

I declined their kind offer and insured for a similar price as my first year.

Ilovecoleslaw · 14/10/2017 19:06

That's crazy!
Mine works out at just over 1000 for a 17 plate Peugeot Confused
It was a part of their just add fuel policy though, and I've only had my license less than 6 months

Storminateapot · 14/10/2017 19:17

Wow! We've just insured DD18's 03 Yaris for £850, she passed her test this week. Most quotes were £1200 - £1400.

Parker231 · 14/10/2017 19:22

I remember as a teenager passing my test and buying my first car without realizing that the insurance would cost more than the car. We’re now insuring the DT’s cars whilst they are at Uni and DH and I have cars insured for business use - we’re paying an eye watering amount each year.

ScrabbleFiend · 14/10/2017 19:26

That's eye watering. I pay £210 a year! Granted I drive an old banger and have 15 years NC but still. Never ever accept renewal price though, I was quoted £350 for my renewal this year, £100 more than last year, one phonecall later and violla, they knocked £140 off their original quote.

Ttbb · 14/10/2017 19:28

Is there anyone you can add on? My husband has added his siblings to our policies to lower premiums.

DontOpenDeadInside · 14/10/2017 19:37

My brother has just passed, 58 plate ford focus zetec (not sure on litres) 31yo. For £1085 Shock

Landy10 · 14/10/2017 19:40

You must be able to find cheaper.
My insurance for an X5 BMW with no years no claims (we had not had a car for 10 years) was £1200 and that's in zone 2 London, parking on the street in quite a high car crime area. Then I crashed the car (my fault) in year one and year 2 it was going to be £1500. Your premium seems ludicrous. Have you really, really shopped around? Asked your home insurers etc?

After crashing we found out we could take car insurance through our professional body (cos of our jobs) and it was £800 and doesn't even matter that I crashed. Flat rate for any car. So are you a member of any professional body?

RainbowPastel · 14/10/2017 20:00

Definitely add on a named driver. Choose someone with many years experience. My Dad is on mine and probably only drives it once a year for the MOT. My insurance company said a named driver doesn't even have to drive the car.

YetAnotherNC2017 · 14/10/2017 20:30

Ouch.

My first insurance cost £400 for the year in 2001.

I stopped driving. When I got a new car in 2010 I started again with no NCB and my insurance was £1,400. It’s scandalous.

RosyPony · 14/10/2017 20:39

I’m more shocked that anyone still drives 3l cars?

My current car is a 3.6l engine and does 21mpg, previous car was a 4.2l that did 13mpg!

Insurance for me on these was half what the OP pays! (And I'm dragged down by having to add my husband who is under 30 and has speeding points)

80sMum · 14/10/2017 20:55

Wow, that is madly expensive! Mine is only £226 a year. Are you really 10 times more of a risk than I am?! I wonder how the insurers arrive at these figures.
