DH has said we might be able to afford a winter holiday to Lapland, one day. I'm hoping while kids are young enough to enjoy it.

We have not been abroad much and I feel very excited!

AIBU being ridiculously excited about Lapland?

(Sort of hoping you will all tell me the best deals and your fabulous experiences too, please!)

My parents took my sister and I to Lapland when we were younger and it was FANTASTIC!
They made it even better by not telling us, and then on the night of the flight, the doorbell mysteriously rang and when we answered the door we found 2 packages - containing a fleece, gloves/scarves and toys for the flight and a personal letter from Santa's elves inviting us to visit them in Lapland. We were just the right age to believe it (and not realise that the suitcases were already packed, flights booked etc...)
When we got there we did all the activities, reindeer rides, skidoos, ice fishing etc. Topped off by a visit to Santa's workshop where he had our letters that we had written to him and gave us a present that we had asked for.
Made for such a great holiday and I can't wait to do exactly the same for my children!

Absolutely not.
We took my DD aged 8 and it was amazing for her and for me (and I am a huge bah hambug/christmas hater!)

It was magical.... but I would look very carefully at your options & strongly recommend you do a few days to real feel the magic!

Canterbury Travel are the best company IMHO. I did the same as a POSSIBLE parents and surprised my DC. It worked a treat, and Canterbury were extremely efficient. It's truly a magical experience

I’ve just booked a diy trip to Lapland for our family and brother in law’s. Huge saving on the packages (which will undoubtedly be amazing and I’ve heard great things about Canterbury). We were restricted to certain dates so the package trips didn’t work for us. We’re taking scheduled flights to Helsinki and then the overnight train to the Arctic Circle.

One of the my best holidays ever! You’ll have an amazing time. Make sure you wrap up warm!

We went to Ruka with Crystal for a week as seemed not that much more than the shorter 3 or 4 day trips.

It was A-MAZING!!! I would do it again in a heartbeat.

We're looking into this for next year and I am INCREDIBLY excited! It's so expensive though 😳

Italiangreyhound · 12/10/2017 17:52

Yes, it is incredibly expensive. We got a little bit of money we were not expecting but sadly it may not be enough!

We went last December, it was absolutely fantastic.
Can't recommend Santa's Lapland enough-we stayed in a cabin rather than a hotel which IMO made it all the more special.

We went to Luosto in Finland for 5 days with Canterbury Travel , staying in a log cabin . It was magical beyond words . My boys were 4 and 6 and still talk about it aged 20 & 22 .

I've looked into it and it is just sloppily expensive. Not sure we can afford it this year. Also dd is at a very tricky age and can easily see her ruining the whole thing!

We did the adult version (ie not a Santa trip but went to Ice Hotel) so did the same activities, dog sledge rid, skidoo safari at night to see Northern Lights etc - magical!

It is amazing!! I loved it! I went as a teenager and it was one of the best holidays I ever had! My only complaint was that because I get hot easily I was dripping with sweat (yes, In Lapland!) because of the massive snow suits and all the layers. Totally worth it though. For the huskies alone!

Oriunda that sounds fab. Are you going to Rovaniemi? Have you booked your own accommodation and does it have the Santa stuff included? How are you getting from the station to your hotel?
Can you tell I want to go! Grin

We went a few years ago to snowy wilderness lodge in pallas with Thomson. It was the absolute best holiday ever. We did a few excursions to make it that bit more special and the kids rave about it still.

Im.desperate to take 2 youngest Lapland. And was planning for this year. However it's getting closer and I don't think it will be possible. It's so dear.
However they are 7 and 9 and worried next year at 10 d's will be too old?
