To ask how do I stop spiders crawling over my face?

I woke last night to feel something crawling on my face. I grabbed it and threw it, I actually heard it make a noise as is it hit the wall so I knew it must be big. I turned the light on to find a huge spider half dead on the floor, it was huge 😭😭

Since spider season has been about I've had loads of these huge spiders in my room and last night was the last straw. I'm petrified of them and this is the first year I've had such a problem in the house

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE give me some ideas as to how I can keep them out of my bedroom atleast!!

I don't kill spiders but....
If one was on my face in the middle of the night the automatic reaction is to grab and throw.
I put conkers on my windowsills and it seems to work quite well.
But they don't bother me that much.

NetballHoop · 11/10/2017 11:53

A mosquito net would stop them getting you in bed.

Notagainmun · 11/10/2017 12:07

Yes to the flea spray!!!! Indorex from Amazon. Haven't found a big spider in my house unless already dead in years.

LemonysSnicket · 11/10/2017 12:10

Line the bed with a wall of conkers and put them in the corners too ... maybe wear an eye mask with conkers sewn to it.

Also I’d suggest an acid peel to get spider willy remnants off of your face

holdthewine · 11/10/2017 12:14

Spidatrap.com from Amazon has literally changed my life. We are breaking the breeding cycle and every year have fewer.

JoanLenin · 11/10/2017 12:16

Do you live in the tropics OP? Judging by the size of that spider you chucked against the wall that made an actual noise I would think you live somewhere in equatorial Africa where creapy crawlies are the size of a bus.

midnightflowers · 11/10/2017 12:16

Buy some flea bombs and set them off around the house.
When bastard Cat brought fleas home we had to do this and it killed every single creepy crawly in the house. Including spiders!
We kept finding dead ones -everywhere-

jaseyraex · 11/10/2017 12:18

I would have died. I would have actually died on the spot. I am petrified of the bastards! People saying they're harmless and not to kill them because they're wonderful and kill all the other pests do not help when you have a genuine phobia. I did a spider workshop at Edinburgh zoo to get me over my phobia and I was still in tears at the end lol.

I have conkers dotted around. I spray lemon every now and again. It doesn't keep them away but there's definitely fewer than we used to get. I'll need to look in to those spider traps myself...

I wonder if this thread needs a trigger warning MNHQ? As an arachnophobe I didn’t RTFT so apologies OP if you don’t need what I posted I just don’t want to read about what happened!

I had psychotherapy which helped a lot, also a course at a zoo which lasted a few hours and was pretty crap, for me. I did improve after the therapy and have never fully reverted but moving to a mega spidery house did cause a relapse. But the spidatraps all over the house catch the vast majority and I actually haven’t seen one loose this season. Put them in dark places near walls and not where pets will get them attached to their paws.

Lovelifebethankful · 11/10/2017 14:23

bran I killed the one that was crawling on my face simply because I threw it against the wall. If I see them crawling on the floor or wall I out a glass over them and then slide some cardboard underneath to release them outside. I never kill them despite having a phobia of them

I have some citrus spray to stop the cats scratching, will get that out again tonight!

cushioncovers · 11/10/2017 14:37

A man in Seattle burnt his house down using spray paint to kill a spider:

The only sensible solution if you ask me!! WinkWink

MinervaSaidThar · 11/10/2017 14:40

I only dust away unoccupied spider webs.

Spiders needs homes too!

Olaf4fuxache · 11/10/2017 14:48

+1 for a mozzy net,the ones you hang from the ceiling and tuck in...

Mysharonawoana · 11/10/2017 15:07

We have a cat and I do genuinely think he keeps the spiders under control. If you are worried about them scratching your bed you can supervise their spider hunting just let them into your room for half an hour an evening and they will go under the bed and track down any remaining spiders.

user1494849703 · 11/10/2017 15:10

Autumn yes! It was so weird, I thought my cat had been on a hunting spree but its worked this year too. Not the kindest I know but effective.

ineedwine99 · 11/10/2017 15:21

On the flip side my cats are bloody useless, they just sit and watch. Not earning their keep Grin

BarbarianMum · 11/10/2017 15:42

If you are really, totally freaked out to the point of never sleeping again I would be then get a box mosquito net.

flutterby12 · 11/10/2017 16:11

This bastard scared me twice. It's not easy keeping your cool in front of your child who wanted to play with it. Even DH was scared!

flutter that was roughly the size of the one that was on my face but he had a slightly fatter body.

Bloody hideous things. I'd have woken the whole house up if it'd crawled across my face!

SuffolkBumkin · 11/10/2017 17:20

I had some amazing advice on here a few years ago. The poster advised to leave lots of Celler spiders up (pic included)
They are predators of the house spiders and eat them. I don't mind them as much as they have their spot in the corner of the room, and just hang around there all the time. We haven't had one house spider since.

BulletFox · 11/10/2017 17:33

My Dad always told me to be gentle with spiders but I have a severe phobia of them and can't always act rationally with them.

I try to trap and release but i got freaked out a few days ago at a giant one in the bathtub and shrieked and killed it. It was an act in panic but it took me a couple of days to pick up the carcass and I still feel guilty for reacting that way

Therewere5inthebed · 11/10/2017 17:52

I had a severe phobia of spiders and i’m still not a fan but I find it easier to cope having spider catchers up and downstairs.

It’s the big house spiders that frighten me, cellar spiders are welcome to stay and we have a false widow living in our bathroom window but she hides after i’ve cleaned my teeth and head to the shower in the morning and never leaves her web.
