Remove the dead rodents obviously - not the cats 😬

mathamerry Have noticed the same message from you on several threads - Are you on commission? Confused

Bluerosethorns · 11/10/2017 05:22

Sorry OP - Forgot to say to youhave my sympathy! And yes, get a cat. They are very efficient indeed. I brought my dear feline in to work once due to a rodent problem (office was in town right near the Thames). He stayed for a few days and was a great help. Good luck with getting rid of those pesky critters. Gin xx

Mintylizzy9 · 11/10/2017 05:32

I've had a squirrel in the loft as well and it sounded like a large attack dog was Irish dancing whilst wearing steel toe capped boots!

Also had voles move in one night and leg it around the living room 😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱 My councils pest control came out for free as it was rodents, might be worth trying yours before paying for a private company to come out.

Good luck!

fullofhope03 · 11/10/2017 05:33

Uh oh indeed @Bluerosethorns ! Don't know why but they've been really hacking me off Grin

Collaborate · 11/10/2017 07:27

If the rats die inside the house (walls or ceiling void) they will decompose and you'll smell it for weeks. Ask the rat catcher if there are any ways to get them out of the house.

TheWildRumpyPumpus · 11/10/2017 07:34

We live next to fields and so have permanent mouse companions in the loft - every now and then we have a clearout of nests but there’s never been any sign of them venturing into the rest of the house.

The only time we got pest control in was for the squirrels which were SO loud it was impossible to sleep. I think they held nightly Squirrel Olympics up there.

BarbarianMum · 11/10/2017 07:35

Are you in the UK and if so, where? If you are in the South it coyld be Glis glis (doormice). Sound like elephants.

Bluerosethorns · 11/10/2017 07:37

Cat is top of my list xx rat man is on route this morning now, i told him irish dancing is exactly what it sounded like they were doing! If he doesn't do a good job i'll get @maths to hunt him down

Bluerosethorns · 11/10/2017 07:41

@barbarian london so could be. Sounded like 10 squirrels though as pp said. I thought I was being dramatic (yes i am a bit but i am also shitless of mice and rats cant help it v nervous about them) so i stood for a minute and it sounded like they were about to crash through into the room. I know they were not but it was just so bloody loud. Being the mature adult i am i ran away and left all the lights on. Hmmmm. Will see what happens today - when i went back in to get a drink i couldn't see them and the noise seemed to have stopped but that was very brief

PollyPelargonium52 · 11/10/2017 07:43

This is weird as only yesterday I heard a big thud above in the loft.

I assumed it was a bird. If I hear it again will have to call pest control specialists in.

Missingstreetlife · 11/10/2017 07:48

Block evry tiny hole they come in through. Act quick to trap or bait or they will breed

Bluerosethorns · 11/10/2017 07:53

@missingstreep ordering mouse mesh for the air vents as we speak!

Babyroobs · 11/10/2017 07:56

When we lived abroad we had rats. I could hear them knowing through into the windowsill from the cavity walls. Horrible. My boys were babies and toddlers at the time.

IamEarthymama · 11/10/2017 08:06

we bought this

I posted our story of little mouse visitors on another thread.
The above deterrent sorted our problem.

Chickoletta · 11/10/2017 08:09

If they put down poison make sure they have a plan for getting them out afterwards. We had this problem with squirrels once years ago. Landlord sent workmen to put poison down then after a week or so we had the most horrendous stink of rotting squirrel and a damp patch on the ceiling!! Had to move out of our bedroom. That was far, far worse than the actual scrabbling about.

I feel sure that professional pest controllers will have a plan for this, just make sure you know what it is. Good luck!

Bluerosethorns · 11/10/2017 08:10

@babyroobs i feel exactly the same it is horrible, sorry you had them too. They are so dirty and massive disease carriers - not the one anytime but definitely not with children. Old floorboards with some very wide gaps in this house too, not great!

Brenna24 · 11/10/2017 08:11

Don't use the sonic repeller once you have a cat though. They can hear the noise as well.

Bluerosethorns · 11/10/2017 08:11

Thanks earthy and chickoletta, will read this now and am going to quiz the poor pest control guy, i have a feeling i will be 'that' woman but oh well

OP posts:
Bluerosethorns · 11/10/2017 08:14

@brenna no definitely won't - the dc want a pair of kittens?! So not sure i will get them now until the problem is sorted, might have them as 'maintenance' but not too keen on 8 week oldish kittens trapped in kitchen at night incase it is a squirrel. I don't know can kittens be around rats? We are going to our nearest rspca later will see what they say

ThatsNotMyUnicorn · 11/10/2017 08:18

I had rats in my loft, it sounded awful at one point I convinced myself if was the woman from next door in my loft scratching at the ceiling as it was that loud. Our neighbour's behind our house had chickens and the chicken feed attract rats.

We got the sonic repellent plug and it kept the rats away from that part of the house but didn't really help get rid of them, in the end pest control got rid of them and the collected their corpses aswell so no problem with the smell.

Bluerosethorns · 11/10/2017 08:39

@thatsnotmyunicorn i could well have a problem with my neighour as well, she casually mentioned that she has had rats for a "few years" on and off. She has a young child too - filthy to live like that with rodents running around your house. Going to try and find out today exactly where they're coming from

OP posts:
ifonly4 · 11/10/2017 08:46

It sounds like rats to me as well. My Mum had them banging around up in the loft and making noises in the walls. Pest control layed traps and kept coming back until they were sure they'd cleared. If nextdoors had them they would have transferred via a gap in the roof or joining wall. In my Mum's case she had a flexible hose (rather than a pipe) from her toilet and they'd come up through the sewers and chewed through that - pest control overcome that problem by fitting something in the sewer which closed if anything came from below, ie rats or even raising water due to early flooding. If it turns out you have rats might be worth alerting nextdoors so they're aware.

ifonly4 · 11/10/2017 08:49

Forgot to say, pest control placed traps are various points and emptied them every time they came back to check. In my Mums case the chap came back about six times - he charged a set rate no matter how many visits were required, I think the minimum visits was three though.
