Vegan coming to stay

amyxo · 09/10/2017 15:43

My friend is coming to stay for 2 weeks, she is a vegan. Would you buy all the vegan cheese and butter and soy milk etc and different food stuffs for her stay? Or would you take her to the supermarket so she could buy it herself?

Needadvice Where can I buy that soup from?

I'd buy a few basics and tell her (in a nice way) she's on her own.

I'm sure she doesn't expect you to deal with her extreme diet.

I'd definitely have vegan wine on hand.

Just get some almond milk in, and something for whatever her first meal on arrival will be.

Don't go buy a whole bunch of vegan stuff without discussing it with her first. Lot's of vegans don't really eat any of the vegan foods meant to replace animal products, and if they do they still have preferences for certain brands, products etc.

That's very thoughtful. I agree with just getting some milk in and maybe some biscuits for when she arrives (e.g. Oreos) then discuss meal plans with her once she's there.

You don't really need all those things, you can cook lovely meals from whole foods. But ask her what she would like. Maybe get a couple of Linda sausages in.

No I would not get them in, but I would ask what do you like, what can I get for you, how do we plan this?

I've been travelling & staying with vegan relatives in last 9 days. They all like different things! And tend to bring own anyway because they are as fussy as anyone else.

My vegan relatives don't give a toss what other people eat & don't need the entire meal to be vegan for them to find enough that they are content with. A lot of vegan milk but very little of the other fake-animal product items.

Look at a girl called Jack blog, her recipes are mostly vegan, cheap & very nice.

I eat vegan for lunch & don't feel hard done by.

Ds and DDIL are vegan so I provide fruit, salad, veg and all the basics and they bring milk, tofu etc. No problem.

Ask her. I can only stomach one particular variety of oat milk and never use soya or almond milk, and I've never found a vegan cheese that isn't revolting to me, but I know other people who have completely different tastes.

It would be nice to get some soya marg in and some soya milk, so she can have a cup of tea when she gets to yours, but I wouldn't worry about the rest, and sort it out after she's there.

(And def don't buy vegan cheese, as 99% of it is vile. Practically every other vegan product has improved over the last couple of decades, but not vegan cheese.)

Ask, or you may buy the stuff that's not as nice or ask if she is happy to go shopping with you when she arrives.

Museum vegan wine - really is that a thing!! Genuine question, goes off to Google

Just to say, maybe get some Oatly milk. I'm not vegan but love it for coffees and hot chocolates. But it's not as hard as you might first think. Blackbean tacos if you normally cook Tex mex, loads of Currys are vegan friendly etc, picky dishes are good (olives, hummus, flatbreads, falafel, roasted veg, rocket salad etc). Have enough food to welcome them at least

It's not called that now, it's called Cooking on a Bootstrap. The A Girl Called Jack domain was bought by someone else, who Jack's going through legal channels to stop.

OP, just speak to your friend. Don't go buying stuff that you don't know if they like it or not.

I probably would get in some Almond/soy milk just to be on the safe side.
Also, a really easy, nice & cheap dinner idea (which even my meat-loving DH loves) is;
Throw 2 chopped onions, a garlic clove, 3 sliced bell peppers & a can of (drained) chick peas into an oven dish, & add powderd fajita mix (no need for oil ect.). Cook for 20 mins and serve with wraps. (Also, it's nice to have some lettuce with sliced Avacados with this too!). - as a vegan, I personally like to eat as naturally as possible (thus I try to avoid substitute cheeses or 'meats') - but it's important to get protein from places like chick peas and beans.

I'd do an online shop, with her to assist me, on the first night.

Violife cheese is delicious. I had to ban it from the house when I was vegan as I'd eat massive slabs of it.

This stuff is brilliant too, and perfect for quick meals: www.tesco.com/groceries/product/details/default.aspx?id=260261027

Oat milk is the best milk for tea as it doesn't separate or curdle etc.

If anyone is coming to stay, I ask them what they do and don't like.

Same is true for vegan or non vegan.

some people have said things they think are obvious - I wouldn't assume. she might much prefer olive oil spread and rice milk to soy spread and soy milk.

never yet come across a vegan cheese that wasn't gross.

Lots of sensible helpful replies OP but also sadly some disgusting comments on here for such a reasonable question!

This reply is for those posters:
Vegans are not 'weirdos', nor should you 'lock the doors'.
Veganism is a way of life that seeks to exclude cruelty as far as is possible.
Why is that weird? Do you enjoy animal cruelty?! Do you think life begins and ends with bacon?
Honestly some people need to watch carnage or earthlings.
In the mean time here's a short, non graphic, video.

Get something in for the first day and then take her shopping. I’m a vegetarian and this is something I prefer.

Loving these meal suggestions!

I'm not vegan but dairy intolerant so eat and love a lot of vegan food. I can't stick vegan cheese and find different dairy free milks are good in different things, ie I cook mostly with almond milk but soya milk tastes better to me in coffee. I'd ask her.

I know lots of vegans who are NOT vegan for animal cruelty reasons.
Shouldn't make sweeping assumption that all vegans are highly bothered about animal treatment.

Report
Ohyesiam · 09/10/2017 16:58

After talking to her, to make sure I was getting the right stuff, I'd be happy to buy it.
