To ignore speeding fine

Found out I had a speeding fine sent to an old address. Didn’t respond obviously and it’s been 10 weeks and not heard anything else. Should I just keep quiet.

Why would you keep quiet? It won't just go away?

No. They'll go to court in your absence and come after you for a massive fine. Better to hold your hands up and take a speed awareness course or a FPN.

Because apart from anything else you can be in trouble for not updating DVLA with your address!

Plus it's an offence not to keep your address details up to date on the DVLA database, which I assume you haven't seeing as they sent it to the old address?

No. You own up and pay the fine.

£1000 fine just for not updating your address, I believe. Your call but I'd be showing willing sharpish.

I’ve never known of anyone actually getting a fine for not updating address. I’m not worried about that. I have now updated it online anyway.
I’m just thinking if I leave it I expect they don’t bother to follow them up and wondered if anyone else had done the same

You won't he convicted of the speeding offence but one under S172 RTA which is failing to identify the driver. Better the contact the court and make a statutory declaration and start the process again. A speeding is better than S172!

Of course they follow it up. Pay your fine and slow down.

Never in a million years will it just go away because you didn't update your address. You're in more trouble, not less, because of this.

These are exactly the sort of circumstances under which they do fine people for not changing their address as they've got you bang to rights, now.

The only other option when they catch up with you is failure to disclose who was driving which is an S.172 offence with 6 points.

I.e. You can either say you received the NIP but ignored it, or you didn't receive it because you didn't change your addrsss. Both are offences with little defence.

I've never known of anyone actually getting a fine to their old address and ignoring it, so perhaps neither of us has the full picture on how it all works...

Ended up with a court summons.

That would be a really stupid thing to do - your final fine could be massive. If you can afford to throw money away, go for it

You need to deal with it. Exactly how depends on whether you are the registered keeper of the vehicle or not, but don't ignore it.

The old tenants haven't updated their address nearly 5 years now I am not sure how many fines they have had now but at least 4, we have had bailiffs round and the latest is a letter from the police, no idea what is going to happen, but the bill keeps going up
